    great sketchbook! i'm not into mechas, but your ink drawings make me appreciate how much work and thought goes into that genre of art. and the way your reflect on sketches is very insightful. took a couple of ideas for my own practice, thanks!

    I like how your sketchbook is filled with ACTUAL SKETCHES. I see way too many sketchbooks where people have whole ass paintings in them and I usually just draw rough head portraits and anatomy practice. It's cool seeing someone whose sketchbook video is just practicing studies
    13:10 this page isn't ugly at all. The drawings are amazing and it's cool to see ur work in progress.

    • @Angie_flores

      Sometimes the whole ass painting is a study too, they’re not sketches but still serve a purpose. I have a couple paintings in my sketchbook but they’re color studies

    Seeing this is very helpful for me to finally understand how to tackle a sketchbook. I have been drawing for as long as I can remember and am not too bad at it, but I have never taken the time to properly practice.

  • @LimeGreenCouchPotato
    @LimeGreenCouchPotato Рік тому +127

    This was a nice reminder that I dont need to study literally everything to be good at art - I can just focus on studying things that I enjoy and am interested in studying. Its so easy to get overwhelmed with what I feel like I should draw vs. what I actually want to draw. Thank you, I will be applying many of these tips in my sketchbook from now on!

    • @mikethebloodthirsty

      To be honest, like you say drawing can be whatever you want it to be. Just find what's fun, experiment with different pens, brush pens, inks.

    4:53 This "downloading" and "installing" analogy is so good. I heard this same description for a skill from my sports trainer and this is perfect. Sometimes we hear and believe we understand something/ a skill or sequence, but then go to replicate it, even a few seconds later and find it difficult to emulate entirely, or recall in the correct timing.
    I never applied that thought to my art however, and this is a great addition. Thanks for this raw description and walk through.
    Also find it funny how you say "this is ugly or i'm drawing ugly"... you have impeccable line work and proportions my guy. Excellent Video and drawings. Thank you!!

  • @OldeLeshi
    @OldeLeshi Рік тому +69

    this is basically all I do (after just doing anatomy/figure for a long time). I'd like to actually do more illustrations sometimes especially since long-form texture/detail rendering is its own skill, but I never feel like I'm ready since there are so many things to analyze and learn about.

    • @narjester
      @narjester 11 місяців тому +1

      Go for it ! For me, learning to draw is a balancing act between studies and renderings. It's only natural to start out with the basics you mentioned but eventually you just have to leave the confort of theory and pop an original piece out. That is assuming you are commited to art and this is especially true if you wanna work in the industry (after all you do need a portfolio of rendered work to apply). Good luck !

    Also, the guy with the staff that you thought was "too skinny," if you want to make him really creepy, keep him skinny, define the muscles a bit like they would be on a skinny guy, maybe show his ribs and some loose skin near his waist, make his hair stringy and greasy-looking, and mess up his visible teeth. I think the drawing is cool!

    Perspective, simple shapes into complex shapes, write notes and use different colored pens, be messy, and what seems most important is to focus on what you’re interested in or find what you’re interested in within’ everything, jot down it all.
    Build a mental library, try to figure out how something was build or works, be interested in the world around you, be creative.
    Uhh what seems most important is to have a focus on something you are interested in, and write notes to better understand something in your own words, and try thing despite not being good because you want to get better and have the potential to grow

    I'm so glad to see a new video on your channel (as usual). And as always very informative, not only on the skill part but also about the way you think or study a subject.
    My favorite part of this sketchbook, is your work on "framing" / "croping" and "compositing" a wide shot / cinema-movie shot.
    The point which amazed me the most, is the double page about the movie Dune. Before you start to explain, i've immediatly recognize the atmosphere and the very particular architecture seen in the movie.
    Love your work !!!

    I loved this video. When you mentioned the sketch book and how you split it in half, where you did a study on one side and applied it to the other side of the page. I also do the same thing. I personally find it as one the best way to improve at art. I recently came back to drawing and that is the process I employed. I've made big jumps in my style and art details. My hatching has improved immensely and my control of the line weight has really helped in creating detail and also adding character to the drawing. The way you did it was well organized you used certain colors to signal for the type of line it was, great attention to detail. Great video overall.

    This is such a helpful video! Thank you for sharing. I am not trying to be a concept artist, I’m actually a cinematographer, and I know a lot of these principles when I’m shooting, but I’m struggling to incorporate what I know into my art, and thinking about it the way you outlined is really useful. I actually never create a frame in my sketchbook, because I focus on objects or people, but I definitely want to start doing that now to improve my composition! Thank you! Love everything on your channel always.

    This is a really good idea. I never realized but I do a lot of studies without then incorporating the ideas into something else. Also great to see labelled ink test pages. I do those, and I thought it was a silly habit at first, but it is actually really helpful for when I go back and look and a color really pops out at me that I haven't used for awhile.

    This sketchbook is on a different level, i am so impressed but also inspired by it! Thanks for showing it!
    It also helped me A LOT not seeing the (what i call) "online/insta Art" (mostly conventionally attractive girls, big eyes, trendy style...) because it reminded me that there is a whole world of art and only bc we are confronted with this insta-style (thats mostly popular bc it is so appealing to look at not only for artists, but also for non artists and people of other industries. These artworks and styles seem like a copy of what is shown on social media anyways, with the difference that its not a photo of an influencer but a drawing. Also no hate to these artist and creators!) doesn't mean that we can't draw differently.
    It is really hard, and harder than i thought, to not surround oneself with the same type of art content and references cause you can easily fall into the mechanism of always drawing the same thing over and over again and by that not improving.
