James Blunt’s father Charles Blount (man next to him in the video) had been diagnosed with stage 4 kidney disease. No viable kidney donor had been found and doctors thought he only had a few months left to live. James wrote the song to express his feelings for his father. When producing the song no editing tricks were done to his voice, it is raw and real. James asked his father to be in the music video. One take! and at the end the whole crew were crying. Charles looked around and asked why everyone was crying saying “I’m still here.” The song was released and during interviews James asked people to get tested for donations. A distant cousin (4th cousin and also named Charles Blount) heard the song and one of the interviews and went to get tested. He was a match and donated a kidney to James’ father saving his life. This song helped save him.

It should be noted that Charles only had the one kidney that was failing because he had earlier donated a kidney for another person.

I lost my father in December 2018 when he lost his fight against cancer. The last months of his life were pure hell for him, my mother, my brother, my uncle and me. I cannot count how many times he said goodbye to me because he was afraid that he would not survive the night and that it would be the last time we see each other. It broke my heart and left a scar on my soul. One morning my mother called me to come immediately because it seems that he would pass away any minute now. I was not fast enough.. he passed away 20 minuts before I arrived. I was glad his pain and suffering was over. But man, he didn't deserve the toture this shit cancer put him through. He was a good man. He did not deserve any of it. Nobody does. 😥
