  • Merida, Yucatan, Mexico has some amazing locations within the city, and several can be visited during a long trip. If you're going for a short visit, however, these are the ones you HAVE to stop by... especially if you're considering being an expat.

We spent two weeks in Merida, just got back. Our home in San Sebastion is coming along slowly but surely. This trip we seem to "get" Progreso and all the hype. We always visit the area while in Merida but never really seem to understand why so many ex-pats love it there. But now, we get it. There's a few restaurants we highly recommended (which I'm sure most have ben to by now) But Crabster right on the Malecon and Maya-Ka were our favorites. Enjoy everyone.

Thanks for the comment, and I completely agree. I don't think I've been to Maya-Ka, but Crabster is absolutely amazing. Their restaurant is beautiful as well.

We moved to Merida a few weeks ago after spending 4 on Isla Mujeres and 2 in Playa Del Carmen and love the city feel with culture in centro. We ended up in Cabo Norte an area outside of city and love the area.

That's fantastic! I've heard and seen pictures of Cabo Norte, but I've never been up there to check it out. Looks amazing though!

@@AlexanderFromKC Yes it's beautiful gated community behind the La Isla mall and for us coming from Playa and Isla it doesn't feel as hot. We get a breeze so it feels better then it did in Playacar.

I just stayed in Chelem and was all around looking at properties with a realtor and had a friend who's in Merida. I realize it's not easy to answer but I'll ask anyway. I found some interesting properties in Chelem for what seemed to be quite affordable(re: cheap) which confuses the heck out of me coming from a year+ exploring Playa del Carmen. Made an offer on a Progreso home that didn't get accepted and since getting back home (Canada) I've been finding people like you and thinking maybe I need to look closer at Merida. I'll be back in April for a wedding and want to focus on this city more. So, what's my question? I guess I'm more looking for an opinion from an experienced person, like yourself. Being a Canadian I default to "beach" because we don't have that but I also think to myself....after a month what does "living" look like and would a better choice be in something like Merida?? In general I think "Beach" then visit Merida when I need something bigger. VS live in Merida and visit the beach when I want which I don't think would be that often frankly. However, a place with a view is kinda killer. I don't necessarily expect an answer but who knows? You sir have the perfect "radio" voice and seem built for this form of media.

This is honestly a great question, and one that we went back-and-forth with. I have a video ( ua-cam.com/video/G_bLYRRsCfY/v-deo.html ) that goes through this a bit. It's from a few years ago but goes through it pretty well.
The biggest issue is maintenance and convenience. In Merida you're not dealing (as much) with the negative repercussions of sand and saltwater, so you're maintenance costs are less overall. The convenience issue has a lot to do with getting through the city with things like Uber, or the delivery of goods to the home. Using the Rappi app you can get everything from video games to groceries to fast food delivered to your door, and the Walmart app is also available. This helps a lot when you just need simple things, and I don't believe they travel all the way to the beach.
Another thing to think about is the "view" which was my biggest issue. I had that dream of waking up and looking out at the ocean, which is no doubt amazing. However, we designed our home so that we look out to the pool area every morning. Between the landscaping and large pool - we have the feel of a boutique hotel, so it's not a bad thing to look out to.

@@AlexanderFromKC Well, I appreciate that answer. I don't quite know areas that well in Merida but found some super cool properties in my range. Think I'm gonna have to do a month there for sure. Hopefully, after these foos get that train operational. That (train) feels like the game changer. However, "investment" wise I think a near-waterfront place is gonna have a lot of uptick vs in Merida. I worry though about beach erosion and REALLY want to know if there's a plan by the government or if you just loose your property over time. It's funny to think about but I do. That pier is starving the Chelem side 🙄. Soo.....still a hard call. Muchas gracias!!

I’m an American who’s lived in Mérida for a little over 6 years. After a while, any city (even one as wonderful as Mérida, becomes just the place where you live. Thanks for reminding me of just a few of the things that make my new city so special. And you’re right - there are so many more.
A friend of over 50 years is coming for a visit in a few months. It will be her first trip to México, and actually her first trip outside the U.S., so I’ve been checking out lots of videos about what we can see and do while she’s here. Your vid gave me lots of good ideas. Do you have one about the Mayan Museum?

I don't have one about the Mayan Museum, but it look absolutely amazing! I'm so happy the videos gave you some ideas, and I hope your friend's trip turns-out to be amazing!
