The Derek and The Dominoes recording is my preferred version. Has so much more gut wrenching feeling being expressed by the guitars and vocals.

Agreed. This was nice though. I had this version on my media players and computers for many years, pilfered from Napster. Didn't mean to get this version but I always liked it.

This is an underappreciated song from the 70s. It really is a great song! A great response, Shawn. If you liked this live version, I recommend the studio version.

Derick and the dominoes is absolutely the best version of this great tune. So much feeling.

Written for Patti Boyd, his wife (she was married to George Harrison of the Beatles first)Eric wrote several songs about or for her. This, Layla, Wonderful Tonight, plus George wrote Something, For you blue, If I needed someone, I need you, and within you without you , as well. This makes Patti the most popular muse in rock history. Rosanna Arquette comes in 2nd (In Your Eyes by Peter Gabriel and Rossana by TOTO)

Nothing against everything else in that song, since it's all great, but it's the chorus that makes it soar. That's a great chorus.

Porch jam for sure. Great image.
Man I bet you would love the studio track to his hit Lay Down Sally from his classic Slow Hand album in the late 70s.

That was an actual organ my friend, with three ranks of keys.
Harmonics on guitar can be used in so many ways. It generally involves plucking the string while you are damping its motion with a finger just enough to mostly kill the fundamental tone that you would normally associate with that note, and letting the higher frequencies and the upper harmonics in it ring out.
A classic example is in the intro of the Yes song Roundabout.
But they are used all the time in so many different ways. If you overdrive it you can get incredible tones out of it by doing pinch harmonics, which is the same idea, except in this case it's your fingertip that is muting the string during a quick strike, and there are multiple ways to do it. You can do it with a pick, and you can also do it where your fingernail itself provides the pluck, and when you get those high harmonics in a situation like that, and it's really amplified, it's amazing how much you can make it squawk. So many great examples, but think of ZZ Top.

The Derek and the Dominoes with Clapton and Duane Allman jammin' together is really worth a listen. Another song written about his love for Patty Boyd,
who was married to George Harrison. This song is from that album.

As others have suggested, you must listen to the electric, studio version from Derek and the Dominoes. Many great songs on that album. Another great blues number is Key to the Highway.

You mentioned that Whitlock used a Hammond on the original, and wondered about keyboards. A Hammond was Jon Lord's instrument of choice, so any Deep Purple live video you can see what it looks and sounds like. This song was written barely a year after Harrison's masterpiece to Patti: "Something".

Great song especially on the original!Back then in the music world and sometimes outside it some couples had an open relationship or marriage where George had other affairs with women so no angel .Eric was suffering from a major drug addiction.

Shawn, the drummer here is the great Steve Gadd. He does the killer drums on the song AJA by Steely Dan. I think you reacted to that one.

This is a great song but the Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs album from Derek and the Dominoes has some great blues guitar from Eric Clapton and Duane Allman. Every cut on this album is great, but standouts to me are Keep On Growin, Key To the Highway, Have You Ever Loved a woman and many others.

This is a great song. I always thought that the Grateful Dead, the World's Best Cover Band, should have covered this song. They never did. This is from Clapton's famous Unplugged Concert on MTV, where he played the memorial song for his five year old son "Tears In Heaven".

As i told you MK and Alan Clark went on tour in 1988 Tokio even with Elton, you can pick one of the whole concert, or "lay down sally", and many more iconic songs(watch the concert). Or as you said you know not a lot about Chet Atkins. One of the first players playing bass, rhythm and Melodie at once. Only MK and Tommy Emmanuel got certified as guitar players from Chet. There is a nice gathering with Chet and friends, where the play dire straits "why worry" sung by the Everly brothers and many talents. But Chet and MK made a record "neck on neck" beautiful sunday morning guitar music. And of course the "notting hillbillies" where Chet played o some songs too. Think thats enough for now, thank you for putting out great music❤️!

While I enjoy this acoustic set, this song really requires electric. The way Clapton wails on this help set the mood of the song and you don't get that acoustically.
