I bought a SARB 033 on your recommendation in 2016 (before the price increase). To say the least, I am well satisfied. To realize now that it is a "cult classic" makes this purchase more than just another daily wearer. This may well have been the best purchase I have ever made. Thank you.

I was never into watches until lockdown began. got hooked on watch youtube and became infatuated. saw the Sarb vids, including yours, and decided to buy one from e-bay, it was all I could afford, I have to save a while for my first Rolex. So I bought it and am in love, I just stare at it and swoon. Over a coffee in the English spring sun it sparkled today. Switched to a brown leather strap. I've never been so in love with anything I've bought

If you want a Rolex, buy the Rolex.
It's not a bad watch, and will last generations. Don't let others sway your opinion.
If you want to try a swiss watch I would recommend: "Tissot Gentleman powermatic 80 silicium"
Tissot is a watchbrand with a rich history, it's a watch that give you 100m water resistant, a sapphire crystal, display caseback, 80 houers power reserve, and using Silicium as the hairspring (not magnetic). The caliber is an upgraded ETA 2824 with a 28800 bph. The faster the watch "runs" the better a watchmaker can regulate it.
As a watchmaker, the Tissot Gentleman is the Swiss watch I would recommend at 1000$
      Best wishes!

Just wrapping up my last course in my Master's degree. We did a project on diffusion of innovations, and I did mine on the quartz crisis, focusing on Seiko. You were the one who first peaked my interest in watches, so it's nice to see your continued appreciation of Seiko as well. Thanks for the excellent content! In my opinion, I would love to see Seiko remain affordable while pushing their more expensive pieces through the Grand Seiko line. That way, it's accessible to more people and there is more distinction between the two product lines.

Absolutely fantastic video, a mix of history and a look at the possible future of Seiko. Congrats on another great production. I have a feeling that you're right about the mid range prices going up towards $1,000 plus. I also feel that a point will come where Seiko will unleash a version of the famed Spring Drive movement and make it available on lower priced sub $2,000 Seiko watches. If that does happen Seiko might yet again take the watch industry by storm. Pure speculation by me, but one never knows!

I think Seiko knows they need to evolve their products because they have had such recent success with low end watch collectors. Those low end watch collectors won’t stay low end forever and seiko wouldn’t want to lose that opportunity to sell them something else to another brand.

I still think they have budget offers though but we're just spoiled. How many reviews of Seiko watches used to say that the bang for the buck is too good to be true? The price increased by $100 and we think that it should now have sapphire glass or whatever else when most other watches in the same price bracket don't. The closest I've seen from swiss watches is lower end Tissot or Certina but Seiko still offers way more variety than both.

Picked up my sarb033 about 2 years ago now. I remember being astonished by the price and underwhelmed by the flash.
I was young (20) and I hadn't owned many watches at that point. The moment i realised I loved my sarb was when I was driving and I noticed the way the light glistened off of the metal. I then started noticing the small but extraordinary things the watch was doing, from the loom, to the reliability and then finally, I understood why the sarb was the perfect watch for me. It's one of the best options for the everyday. The 'blandness' I initially experienced opened to the scrutinising of the smallest parts of the watch and I found it difficult to call anything on it half assed.
Also, it has some weight to it which is nice :)

I was given a Sarb033 by my wife as a college graduation gift back in early 2019. I put a beautiful leather strap on it from Two Stitch Straps and it has rarely left my wrist since, other than the occasional summer outing where my SKX013 demands to be worn. As I look at my wrist where the Sarb033 has ticked away with no hesitation or excuses for close to 3 years, I am reminded of the joy of graduating college as a dad with two kids. This watch was part of my journey......and I feel pretty lucky to have one.

I was worried this would be an outdated rehash of a topic we have seen across UA-cam, but in fact it's a really well put-together historical summary of the company Seiko. The editing and the old pictures and adverts of Japan were particularly nice. It seems that with the channel, which at this point has a lot of watch-enthusiast cred, like Seiko, you are playing the long game -- quality videos on fairly highly demanded subject matter. There are those like us that are well aware of the SARB033 and the Seiko price hikes, but then there are people just getting started on the hobby and for them I think this video is super illuminating. Even for me this was an interesting summary because of the old footage.
As far as the higher prices, it seems pretty straight forward -- there is higher demand for the brand, as well as some inflation, so the prices have gone up. I was kind of hoping you'd add something more we hadn't considered there, but it is indeed fairly straightforward. Personally I think if you are looking for value for money these days, Casio is blowing everyone out of the water (how do they do it?? Time for another Casio deep dive?? EFV-100D I am looking in your direction), and for mechanical options there are a number of microbrands that have Seiko movements anyway, and then there's Orient as well.
As far as the brand Seiko, what is really hurting their brand more than anything is the lack of QC on the chapter ring alignment and the stubborn use of Hardlex in 500 Euro watches. I don't care much about their sometimes lousy bracelets and straps, you can switch those out rather cheaply, but how am I going to spend nearly 1000 dollars on a watch and worry about whether its markers line-up? Also, they need to narrow the range of their accuracy promises. Tissot with Powermatic 80 is more compelling as a movement than the comparable 6 series Seiko movement, and an entry-level Sinn or Damasko (if you are going tooly) just blows them solidly out of the water.

Sarb035 eventhough only difference is dial color, it looks like a completely different watch and gives completely different feeling when on wrist. Both sarb033 and 035 are strap monsters. I have both and feels like I have two different watches because of how it looks on different straps and how the eggshell white looks under the sapphire crystal. Once the light hits it, you'll feel like you're wearing a $10k watch. The black dial looks sporty and the white dial looks dressy. I wish you luck in purchasing 035. You will not regret it.
