VW has done well in the ICE market. They seem to be struggling to compete in the EV market to produce cars at the sort of price point they need to reach and get the sales figures they need. I hope they succeed. Building good affordable BEVs is hopefully something this partnership will make possible.
The current generation of EVs is just a first wave in the evolution of the technology. People always ask about range of my MG rather than the ask about the cost of travelling 100km.
If VW can succeed in lowering the prices of a range of cars for the EV market by a recognised and established brand it will be good for everyone. The EV market needs to find a way to enter the consciousness of the average consumer as being a more affordable option than an ICE vehicle.
For me the connection between SAIC and MG was important. I think of our MG4 as an English car. That is, an English design, but built in China in the same way that my iPhone is an American design built in China.
I remember how long it took the Japanese brands and then the Korean brands of cars to be accepted.

I agree and it's great that you chose MG4, the price/performance ratio is still excellent.
I believe that VW can make a cheap EV but for some reason they haven't wanted to yet. Question is why... Perhaps they want to make as much money as possible on internal combustion cars and servicing them while they still can. Or perhaps they really just missed the starting gun and are now playing catch up.
As far as communicating EV affordability, you're absolutelty right. Many people get scared off by the initial higher price of an EV but don't take the time to calculate how much money they could actually save in the long run. I try to tell people when I get the chance, but definitely some sort of comprehensive informational campaign for the masses would help.
