Jarrod, I think I figured out the heating on the cooling pad. The back of a cooling pad is the most open and with all the hot air moving out the back of the legion 5 it's just pulling in heated air. I found with my cooling pad if I lift the front a little off the ground, maybe a centimeter, then it improves cooling but I also have the LOQ 15IRH8 4060 which has side and back venting.
What I'm not liking about Lenovo is that their design for the 5i Pro is not really improving by that much each year. Sure, the hardware changes, but if you look to a 2021 5 pro, and then the ones from the 3 years, it really just changes internally aside from the logo on the lid. Like, keyboard layout is the same, the 16:10 aspect ratio 2k screen has been the same or similar enough, the backlight is the same with the 4 zones. Considering the fact a 3070ti is extremely similar to a 4070, and the 2022 laptop can be found for like half the price if not less, I don't really see the reason to upgrade from an older model unless you really need the CPU upgrade
That's true. It's quite a large difference from this year's ASUS Zephyrus series, which got a new updated look with OLED panels. Upgradability did go down though.
Ive had my legion 5 pro 3070 5800h for a few years now, got it from Wal-Mart for 1200. Ive had 0 complaints. Its spent its whole life plugged in on a raised stand with conservation turned on. Its spent endless hours playing cod, fortnight, beam, battlebit, and and battlefield..... If I had one nit pick it would be that my fans have clogged up pretty good. Thats probably on me though for not cleaning it often...... Also I did upgrade the ram
Hi Jarrod ..montherboards are dying in Lenovo Loq which comes with intel 13th and 14th HX processors .. happening in large no.. I have details of around 15-20 people who faced motherboard dead issues with 1-3 months of laptop purchase
I asked Lenovo and they said that they have found a very small number of cases (relative to the total number of LOQ laptops sold) and are actively looking into it.
@@JarrodsTech thanks Jarrod .. I made video on this topic on my channel .. I will talk to venomtech on this..but this guy venomtech was saying battery drop is normal 😂…it’s hard to trust sponsored tech UA-camr in India
I use this laptop for work and gaming. I think if you can get it on Sale (i.e. Xmas etc.) go for it. It has good build quality, good Intel CPU / GPU (i.e 4060 RX or the 20% faster 4070 RX if you can afford it) and inbuilt cooling that deals with heat build up and keeps thermals in check. One thing you will need to wrap your head around though is the removal of the back panel for hardware upgrades- changes. Reviewers always make it seem as if having the right prying tools , is all that it takes. Nope, that is NOT the case. Trust me I have experience with this ( as I tried to upgrade memory RAM), and still it was a struggle to get it carefully opened without breaking any of the plastic clips that fasten the back panel to front part of the laptop. If you insist on doing the same, take your time, do not rush or get impatient, because if you do that is when you will break part of the back panel, Other people on Reddit have mentioned this too, so Be warned about this design flaw.
At 11:40 could the battery drain be due to the activation of the battery conservation mode? Because in my lenovo when I put the conservation mode it stops charging at 80%. Still a strange behaviour btw.
Well that's the point of conservation mode. It limits the maximum charge to around 75-80% of capacity in order to decrease battery wear and I haven't experienced a limit for max battery power usage in that mode that would differ from other modes, though that may be because of my model.
What I don't like about Lenovo's Legion nowadays is the lack of display options in the high end and the downgrade of the 5 Pro meaning that Lenovo won't be my next option, sadly bc I enjoy their 5 Pro 5000,
The downgrade of the 5 pro becomes irrelevant the moment you start comparing it to the competition that's on the market at the same time. It's usually at the top or near the top of the best value for money list, whatever it's called.
@@MyRealName How it become irrelevant? Just bc still good doesn't mean as a client I don't want it better and the price still the same or went up due the 4000 series, which due Nvidia faults wasn't any better than the 3000 (at least from the 4070 and below), they cut many great feature like USB 4 or Rj45.
They released a fantastic display on the Legion Slim 5 14" with an OLED WQXGA 16 : 10, but somehow failed to deliver similar OLED panels on other laptops of the Legion series.
@@ctrl_x1770 exactly and for the legion that probably would use it the less, I mean, if gaming is what you're looking for, would rarely be in a 14inch. The Ryzen is only available for the Legion slim only? Is there a significant difference between the default cpu for the 5i and the 5 slim? Which CPU should one pick?
I have always loved the Lenovo Legion 5, but I don't like this design at all, mostly because of the port layout. Having the previous Legion behind me made it much easier for me to connect it to desktop peripherals. I hope that port arrangement returns in future versions
at 18:00 the FPS for Legion 5i is better than 7i with higher CPU wow apart from premium material and a little bit less weight, is there any other reason to go for 7i?
Once again a brilliant review Jarrod! Is the Slim 5 Gen 9 review coming soon too? Excited to see if there's any real difference in cooling from the 7840HS Slim 5 from last year.
Thanks, I don't thnk they're planning on sending it, but we'd probably declone anyway as I don't think it has any differences other than the CPU change, which is still Zen 4 (for now, maybe they will do a Zen 5 one soon)
Maybe the cooling is reversed, so that instead of having the bottom vents suck up cool air, they blow out hot air, so it doesn't benefit from a cooling pad blowing air underneath it. My Lenovo slim pro 7 does this.
@@gs_08 I know my lenovo slim pro 7 does blow air the other way, I did ask lenovo and they said it was intentional but I don't expect it to be on the legion line of laptops, I haven't tested it, you should look to others for information. I find it counterintuitive because air gets trapped easier on the bottom of the laptop.
I literally do not know what the hell Lenovo is doing with their naming changes right now, But what I do know is they're fancy different names are still better, cheaper, and receive better warranties than other companies. CRAZY
The slim 5 is still the better version even though they are both quite similar. But really the pros are that most of the ports are hidden in the back. Also the Slim 5 has a full SD card and not the small micro SD card. I also believe the additional side vents from the Slim 5 still provides better cooling.
My main issue is that the Balanced mode already sounds like an airplane taking off, so I play on quiet. Wonder if it is possible to tune the custom mode so that the performance is close to balanced but the fans stay like quiet (maybe by allowing to gpu and cpu run a bit hotter within reasonable margin).
Try experimenting with a frame rate limit in the NVidia drivers while using balanced mode. That way during less demanding parts of the game it can downclock and reduce the fan, so it stays quieter and heat doesn’t build up like when maxing it out.
I bought this laptop Today and battery sucks 1.5hr while idle not even UA-cam will it increase with time as I've just charged it to 100 and let it drain as people mention this to to first time
Why does the battery life sucks so much compared to last year's model? Does the HX chip suck that much more power on light tasks compared to regular H chips? It's really unfortunate that my region doesn't have many last year's model in stock anymore. The slim 5 sold here all have the ryzen 8000 series chips. Found a legion 5 pro from last year that costs more than this legion 5 with the same gpu

it would be better if lenovo has a feature called bypass mode where instead of powering the laptop through the battery, the laptop will power directly onto your electricity in your home as long as you plug your charger in your laptop. this feature is already available in android phones and hoping this feature will expand to laptops
I think a review of the slim 5 gen 9 might actually be useful despite the apparent lack of changes since last year. laptopmedia recorded some pretty bad temps with this year's but I can't seem to find any pair of reviews of both gen 8 and gen 9 from the same reviewer and so - the same testing conditions.
@SameLif3 how is going so far? Is worth it tho? How’s the fan doing? Is too noisy? Sorry to many questions, i just wanna know if 4060 is worth it than upgrading to 4070 😭
It can be argued micro SD is today so common it will target more people than what a full-sized card slot would do. For those in need of a full-sized card reader a USB variant are really easy to find.
>Missed opportunity to introduce Core Ultra 7 to a mainstream laptop >Uses overkill HX processor instead with dinky 4070, CPU advantage in gaming disappears from 1440p upwards to the point that a 5 Slim 4070 would likely match it based on the TUF A15 4070 results >Worse port layout than Slim model despite the extra volume The Legion Normal/Slim/Pro fragmentation has been a mess.
8 GB of Vram and 1440p.. my 3070Ti was completely worthless after 2 years! So I sold my laptop, I will boycott 1440p on laptops, 1080p is plenty with screens this small. I ended up with a 25" 1080p240 monitor but I later thought why not just get a desktop at this point..🤣 That project ended up north of €2000 with a 26L matx case, Ryzen 7600 and 4080S connected to my OLED TV. Edit: also sold the monitor.
I had to change my old Asus ROG laptop and this Lenovo Legion 5 had some discounts in my EU country (around 1400 EUR for 14900HX, RTX 4070, 32Gb ram and 1TB SSD); I was thinking to buy this one, but I wanted something more future proof and in the end I chose an also discounted Acer Predator Helios PH16-72 with 14900HX, RTX4080, mini LED display 250Hz, 32GB ram, 2TB raid ssd, clickable microsd, per key RGB (2400 EUR).
What should I get? This or the pro? The pro seems to have the older coldfront 3.0 cooling solution but is advertised as having a better cooling. I am not sure how much better the hyperchamber is and I dont understand why the pro version of the same laptop doesnt use it. Thermals is a big issue for me because I live in a very warm country.
Can I change the screen resolution to full HD 16:10 and will it still look good? I want to but legion for games likę diablo 4, and shooters: cs2, call of duty warzone and black ops 6, overwatch etc.
can you change the upgrade score chart to what can be upgraded or can't be. because the numbers does not mean anything to the viewers unless I'm missing something.
Knowing Legion lineup I assume the 140w charging through Type-C is only with Lenovo 140w GaN charger , and only 100w if using non Lenovo GaN charger. This kinda info is important to mention if true, so unsavvy people won't be misleaded
Ethernet with all the USB-A ports on the right side is a deal-breaker for me. I would rather have air vents on the side with most of the ports on the back like it used to be.
Tbh I hate Lenovos naming system, if it even has a system. Trying to figure out what year, type and generation each laptop is when shopping for them is near impossible. Most stores don't include relevant info on their websites, and the naming scheme is utterly useless in this regard. This is an exceptional review - thank you.
Yeah. It got to be a bit of a mess. We typically look out for CPU and GPU generations as a quick way to determine release year. It gets trickier when they use previous year hardware though.
Jarrod the asus zephyrus m16 2023 with 4070 is on sale for $1499. What’s the overall better laptop, that or the white Lenovo legion 7i you reviewed that’s $2000?
First impression after a few minutes looking at it: i really like it. It doesn't scream gamer kiddy but isn't overly stealthy with those bad black finishes like razer uses, that are more smudge than black afte rhandling it. It's also nice that they put two of the major connectors in the back. HDMI and Charger cables are a pain and it's great not having them in the mouse zones. The two things i'd point out as "ehh" is the location of the ports, being all bunched towards the user and the RJ45 not being in the rear.
I really hate the way my laptop is being left behind by the new games. I have a Lenovo Legion 5 and it is slow falling off which is a shame because it had been such a good laptop
A question about the €200 difference. I will now take the MSI laptop Raider Ge78 HX and now there is a question because // 1. -Rtx 4090 - i9-13980HX 32gb RAM is (3100€) 200€ cheaper than. 2- RTx 4080 -i9-14900HX 64gb RAM And I'm wondering if it's better to pay 200€ and have 64gb of RAM and a newer processor but with rtx 4080. or maybe you have other options up to €3,300
I picked up the latest Slim 5 Gen 9 AMD 7735HS/RTX 4070/16GB RAM/IPS WQXGA/1TB SSD for $1150 (Lenovo site). Then I see Best Buy had the Slim 5 14.5" OLED/Ryzen 7840HS/8 GB RAM/RTX 4060/1TB SSD for $980! Another buddy of mine suggested the Zephyrus G14 14/OLED/Ryzen 9 8945HS/16GB RAM/RTX 4060/1TB SSD for $1299 at BB. I'm leaning towards the Slim 5 (16") since it is upgradable (with extra SSD and DIMM slot) and also it has the RTX 4070. But the Slim 5 14.5 is under $1000. What would you recommend?
Is the cooling system any enough? Because on the left and right side there isnt cooling system. Only on the back and on the ground. And most of gaming notebooks have cooling also on the sides. If anyone could answer this i'd appreciate.

WARNING: Don't buy 13th gen Intel which reported being faulty with sharing electricity un evenly with components inside cpu. It won't last next 5 years

Was waiting for this one ❤
Ive had my legion 5 pro 3070 5800h for a few years now, got it from Wal-Mart for 1200. Ive had 0 complaints. Its spent its whole life plugged in on a raised stand with conservation turned on. Its spent endless hours playing cod, fortnight, beam, battlebit, and and battlefield..... If I had one nit pick it would be that my fans have clogged up pretty good. Thats probably on me though for not cleaning it often...... Also I did upgrade the ram
Wild, the 5i has an SD Card slot but the 5i Pro doesn't
A review that I was waiting for.
7:50 why does the old lenovo loq beat the new legion 5 😢
Less powerful cpu hence less power demanding cpu , if you really want good battery life try to get one with a amd processor instead of intel
Do this year Slim 5 AMD 4070 32GB please
How is this a mid Gaming laptop in the US this cost 1900 euros minimum here in Italy 😢
Iv been waiting for this review!
The temps are really good for 185 watts on the CPU and GPU, especially in this form factor.

It's a legion 5i pro with i9 13900hx still worth in 2024?
@@jonnypena7651 What about this year's Legion 7i?
They released a fantastic display on the Legion Slim 5 14" with an OLED WQXGA 16 : 10, but somehow failed to deliver similar OLED panels on other laptops of the Legion series.
@@ctrl_x1770 exactly and for the legion that probably would use it the less, I mean, if gaming is what you're looking for, would rarely be in a 14inch.
Also, they have launch multiple legions with miniled display for the Chinese market only, meaning that the limitations is only a corporate one and no a technical.
i am using this laptop from 2 feb in my configuration i got i7 14650hx with rtx 4060 16gb ram and 240hz 500nit pannel and from 2 month im facing the issue with driver which is now fix after bios update in uk its around 1280£ with student discount
Hey i bought the same one but with 165hz display.. how is it and is it good for gaming and programming ? Did u face any issues after that
The Ryzen is only available for the Legion slim only?
@@JarrodsTech do a review on the Acer nitro 16 please
@JarrodsTech which cooling pad did you use in this test ?
My lenovo legion 5 died after a year and a half. I used to be a big lenovo fan but not now. Unacceptable. Surfed the net and I find I am not alone.
I'm sorry to hear that , what were the specs
Maybe the cooling is reversed, so that instead of having the bottom vents suck up cool air, they blow out hot air, so it doesn't benefit from a cooling pad blowing air underneath it. My Lenovo slim pro 7 does this.
so there is no point in me buying a premium cooling pad? have you tested this?
@@gs_08 I know my lenovo slim pro 7 does blow air the other way, I did ask lenovo and they said it was intentional but I don't expect it to be on the legion line of laptops, I haven't tested it, you should look to others for information. I find it counterintuitive because air gets trapped easier on the bottom of the laptop.
Hey man, love your review for years. For the battery life test, you should include what the resolution of UA-cam videos is. I typically assume 1080p.
720p. You can check full settings here: jarrods.tech/list-of-laptop-battery-life/
I literally do not know what the hell Lenovo is doing with their naming changes right now, But what I do know is they're fancy different names are still better, cheaper, and receive better warranties than other companies. CRAZY
The slim 5 is still the better version even though they are both quite similar. But really the pros are that most of the ports are hidden in the back. Also the Slim 5 has a full SD card and not the small micro SD card. I also believe the additional side vents from the Slim 5 still provides better cooling.
The 5i seems to out perform the Pro 5i, while being lighter and has better battery life. Is there any advantage to the Pro 5i?
Yes 300w power adaptor my 5i drain battery plugged in while gaming cuz 230w 6-7 hr 20% battery
So why did they moved the port's from behind (the perfect spot) to the side, thats a downgrade in my eye's
Better cooling supposedly
indeed. i love ports at the back. sleek and hidden away.
It starts to get interesting when you can get steady 30+ FPS in games with quiet mode so you can play without headphones at low volume.
I bought this laptop Today and battery sucks 1.5hr while idle not even UA-cam will it increase with time as I've just charged it to 100 and let it drain as people mention this to to first time
Hey how is the laptop now ? And how is the battery life
@@badaxgamer8435
It is giving a backup of 3hr while coding which is really low for me
Why does the battery life sucks so much compared to last year's model? Does the HX chip suck that much more power on light tasks compared to regular H chips?
It's really unfortunate that my region doesn't have many last year's model in stock anymore. The slim 5 sold here all have the ryzen 8000 series chips. Found a legion 5 pro from last year that costs more than this legion 5 with the same gpu
Hey choosing between same priced 2023 models: STRIX G16(4060/i7-13650HX/1920x1200) and Lenovo Legion 5(4060/i5-13450HX/2560x1600p) or TUF 2024 (4060/i7-13650HX/1920x1200)????
So cooling pad won't work on this one? Is it the same with slim? That is kinda big deal breaker, I feel like it will be throttling sonner or later
Are you going to test the new 15.3" 16:10 laptops from XMG/Tongfang? They are quite an interesting chassis promising full power hardware in a package somewhere between compact 14" and standard 16" gaming laptops.
I just had the Lenovo legion slim 5 by watching your video and I opened to clean and I found a dent in the heat pip please check this and say me it's ok or it's bad and how to send the photo to you and i also upload photo in your least x post

Hi I was thinking on getting the i9 instead of i7, any thoughts tho? I can’t really chose please heeeelp
I got it for 1000$, pretty happy with it, but I bought it behind my parents back :D
Wonder why AMD versions do not have the new power button.
does customizable legion has any issues with warranty or build quality or the parts used inside it are old ?
5:16 Got a slim5 And i’m loving the placement +1 here
it would be better if lenovo has a feature called bypass mode where instead of powering the laptop through the battery, the laptop will power directly onto your electricity in your home as long as you plug your charger in your laptop. this feature is already available in android phones and hoping this feature will expand to laptops
I think it does have reverse charging feature in it even while the laptop is turned off using the C port.
Please review handheld PCs which has the best performance
Definitely worth it
On best buy a 4060 open box one is 1000$ and with AMD CPU it's 800$
Best budget laptop for this year
When the fans kick in, is a clicking sound produced? I’ve just bought one and wonder if the clicking sound is the fans
Can someone explain what are the differences between legion 5, legion 5i and legion 5 slim ?
I think a review of the slim 5 gen 9 might actually be useful despite the apparent lack of changes since last year. laptopmedia recorded some pretty bad temps with this year's but I can't seem to find any pair of reviews of both gen 8 and gen 9 from the same reviewer and so - the same testing conditions.
Would an i9 14900hx be okay with this chassis? Am thinking of getting one,
It will overheat
Maybe undervolting be useful
Am confused too 😢
@SameLif3you got the i9? How is it? I plan on getting i9 too
@@Cranmoohh really? Dangg currently, the i9 is cheaper on the market now for black friday sale :< I was planning on buying on for uni
So, one can not use G- sync on the laptop alone? Only when connected to a separate display?
>Missed opportunity to introduce Core Ultra 7 to a mainstream laptop
>Uses overkill HX processor instead with dinky 4070, CPU advantage in gaming disappears from 1440p upwards to the point that a 5 Slim 4070 would likely match it based on the TUF A15 4070 results
>Worse port layout than Slim model despite the extra volume
The Legion Normal/Slim/Pro fragmentation has been a mess.
8 GB of Vram and 1440p.. my 3070Ti was completely worthless after 2 years! So I sold my laptop, I will boycott 1440p on laptops, 1080p is plenty with screens this small. I ended up with a 25" 1080p240 monitor but I later thought why not just get a desktop at this point..🤣
That project ended up north of €2000 with a 26L matx case, Ryzen 7600 and 4080S connected to my OLED TV.
Damn, so much money.
What should I get? This or the pro? The pro seems to have the older coldfront 3.0 cooling solution but is advertised as having a better cooling. I am not sure how much better the hyperchamber is and I dont understand why the pro version of the same laptop doesnt use it. Thermals is a big issue for me because I live in a very warm country.
how is compared to the lenovo loq? is it a big difference?
Hi! Just wanna ask for some insights
Which is much better Lenovo legion 5i pro (2023) or the latest legion 5i? Thanks!
Why are companies trying to compete with Intel for the most confusing naming convention crown?
The version of lenovo vantage is like a premium thing? My lenovo dont have so many information like you have.. 😢
Can I change the screen resolution to full HD 16:10 and will it still look good? I want to but legion for games likę diablo 4, and shooters: cs2, call of duty warzone and black ops 6, overwatch etc.
Thank you for being more objective compared to other youtubers that took the sponsorship bag
I like be'lakor too :) so happy to see underrated bands randomly lol

What's the difference between the Lenovo legion 5 pro gen 8 and the 5i gen 9 other than specs, i kept researching and i couldn't find any differences
can you change the upgrade score chart to what can be upgraded or can't be.
because the numbers does not mean anything to the viewers unless I'm missing something.
I am struggling between 5i pro 5i or 7i because 7i has better speakers and 5i and pro 5i have better performance
Knowing Legion lineup
I assume the 140w charging through Type-C is only with Lenovo 140w GaN charger , and only 100w if using non Lenovo GaN charger.
This kinda info is important to mention if true, so unsavvy people won't be misleaded
Ethernet with all the USB-A ports on the right side is a deal-breaker for me. I would rather have air vents on the side with most of the ports on the back like it used to be.
Yeah. The old design with the "annoying" ports at the back was fucking great!
Hey jarrod can you try doing a review on MSI katana a 15? Need your thoughts on this one
It gets trickier when they use previous year hardware though.
would you recommend getting a cooling pad for 2023 Legion Slim 5i? or does the existing cooling tech work fine
Thank you for the review. Was considering whether to get this or the Asus TUF F16
We just got the TUF so hopefully will know soon!
is lenovo legion 5i rtx4050 good?
any idea on what's the specific serial number for the model used here?
Hey Jarrod, How does it compare to Legion Pro 5 and the 7i?
I got lenovo legion 5 slim with ryzen 7 7735hs and rtx 4070 for 1200$ did i got scammed??
As a guy who uses SD cards… they’re all going to micro SD anyway. So a micro SC card slot is more than fine.
Jarrod the asus zephyrus m16 2023 with 4070 is on sale for $1499. What’s the overall better laptop, that or the white Lenovo legion 7i you reviewed that’s $2000?
Is there difference with lenovo china version compare to its international version?
Acer predator Helios neo 16 vs Lenovo legion i5 which is the best lap for 3d animation
The two things i'd point out as "ehh" is the location of the ports, being all bunched towards the user and the RJ45 not being in the rear.
how do you feel about the laptop a month later? anything to help worried about?
I really hate the way my laptop is being left behind by the new games. I have a Lenovo Legion 5 and it is slow falling off which is a shame because it had been such a good laptop
A question about the €200 difference. I will now take the MSI laptop Raider Ge78 HX and now there is a question because //
1. -Rtx 4090 - i9-13980HX
32gb RAM is (3100€) 200€ cheaper than.
2- RTx 4080 -i9-14900HX 64gb
RAM And I'm wondering if it's better to pay 200€ and
have 64gb of RAM and a newer processor but with rtx 4080. or maybe you have other options up to €3,300
Does it still have the issue where only the official Lenovo 140w USB C charger can hit 140w?
The previous version had this issue.
so it can connect to 3 external monitor and all of them connect to nvidia graphic, right?
Hell nah bro called this laptop mid range 💀
Is the cooling system any enough? Because on the left and right side there isnt cooling system. Only on the back and on the ground.
And most of gaming notebooks have cooling also on the sides.
If anyone could answer this i'd appreciate.
How does the legion 5 compare to the LOQ version? On paper the cpu and gpu are the same.. I wonder why is thete a 100 to 150 dollar difference between the 2?
