I bought the same bike in September but can’t use it at the moment I was involved in a fast downhill ski accident and broken my right leg in November.
I started watching your amazing video and have built an indoor Zwift setup. At Week 3.5 on December 21, my life changed from as little as 10w, barely able to move, to 100w this week. My recovery has improved substantially thanks to your informative and positive videos.
    Thank you

Once you go disc, you never go back. I am on my second hydraulic disc bike and now love that the manufacturers are making them the majority, not the exception. Enjoy your new bike Shane. Lovely.

Sick bike, mate! I've got the 2018 TCR Advanced Pro 1 Disc (blue/orange). A couple observations:
The tires are bombproof, albeit a bit on the heavier side for 25C tubeless tires. My AC 1's weighted around 335 g new. I've done 5k+ miles on them on not so great road in the middle Europe and I've only once got in a bit of a "pinch" when I picked up a 3mm thick drill bit but managed to get 20 miles back home without issues and mended the tire no problem. I've got GP 5000 TL's ready for next season though.
I've cut and put two strips of black rubber chainstay protector on top of the handlebars either side of the stem. This allows me to get into a TT position and rest my forearms on the handlebars without pressing them against the bare metal. Being black-on-black those strips are almost invisible at first glance.
The seatpost clamp at the top can be flipped between -15 and +5 mm (IIRC) settings effectively making it easier to achieve a TT position. I don't think Giant advertises this, but the option is there.
You may (or may not) want to adjust the front axle skewer by undoing the silver bolt in the middle so that it's parallel to the ground for them #MarginalGains. And for #UltimateMarginalGains put some clear tape over the axle hole on the right leg of the fork and pedal bolt holes on the inside of the cranks. Yeah, I'm weird, I know.
Anyway enjoy the new bike! ^_^

love your work, I have the same model in a 2018 red, couldn't resist as price was $4200, enormous bang for buck and so far just love it!!! Like you, I'm extremely impressed with build and combination of components, I said to myself I'll only buy a new road bike if it's a significant enhancement on what I already ride. Di2 + Hydro Discs, Thru Axle/Carbon Rims and general frame geo - all make for an outstanding bike - I've been using all this stuff for years on mtb (apart from Di2), so know it works. A tip, just leave it factory and ride ... "parts left out cost nothing".
tubeless: you know many run them at 65 psi, I'm at 80 psi on 84kgs, descending Mt Donna, felt solid and predictable, but think they could roll a bit quicker - will play around with psi, also if you do get a flat be prepared for a battle to get the tubeless valve out. enjoy.

Shane, try having the right large lever be up only for the rear, the left upper only be the down for the front, and then the small levers the same for the front derailleur. So much more intuitive. If you don't like it, easy to change!

Nice bike mate, nothing better than a shiny new Xmas present to one's self. TCR really is the best all rounder out there in my opinion. I wouldn't choose Hunt over those Giant wheels, that would surely be a downgrade. Especially in hubs! Pretty sure Giant use DT internals. Hunt will be novatec or bitex probably. Ditch the Gavia tubeless, they wont seal even tiny thorn holes above 40psi. Get some contis on there! Im passing on my TCR soon, I shall miss it but there should be a new TCR out Autumn 2019. Cheers

About Time! Haha. Love the bike. Glad to see you on a bike appropriate for a cycling Tech reviewer. Granted most of your work is on a trainer, but even then for viewers like me the old Giant was was glaringly obvious the oldest bike tech in every video. That 36cm bars are so small, but the fact that you and a good number of pros say they like then has me looking at something closer to a 40cm or 38cm (aero bars of course). Merry Chrismas! Based largely on your reviews last year I purchased the Elite Direto, which has been great. Christmas Eve was my first ride on my new Wahoo Kickr Core and as you and DC Rainmaker shared, even better! Thanks for the content you put out, it's exactly what I would want to help me choose the right equipment.

Great bike choice! I have a 2018 SL Pro 1 and love it. A word of warning on tyre clearance though - I would be very careful what you choose to run as I had a 2015 giant defy (same clearance as the current TCR) and ran 28mm conti GP4000 and there wasn’t enough clearance and over time I ended up with some fine scrapes both on the fork area and also in the rear stay area. I’m currently running GP4000 25mm on my TCR and wouldn’t dare run much more. The 25mm conti seem to measure in around 27mm mounted anyway so it’s not too bad.

Great choice! I recently picked up the 2018 version of this bike for $2000 off RRP at my local store as they were clearing 2018 stock. I can confirm that conti 4000's in 28 mm just fit. I rode the Gavia tyres that were set up tubeless for 8km before getting rid of them. Worst tyres i've ever had on a bike.

  • @markreams3192

Once you’re accustomed to disc brakes it’s very difficult to go back to rim brakes. They’re that much better. You will however have to keep an eye on the pads. They wear quicker. I’ve gone through 3 sets this year but I have ridden 12,000 miles. I’ve found Giant tires to be a bit harsh. Switching to any top tier racing tire, especially in a 28mm will sooth out the ride. That’s a very nice looking bike! Enjoy the ride.🚴🏻

  • @uppon2
    @uppon2 5 років тому +1

Congratulations on the new bike, Shane. You deserve it :) great video! This is a fantastic bike. I have the medium 2018 model (Black and neon red) which is almost identical. The main difference being the 2019 having the in house power meter and 42mm deep rims. The 2018 has no power meter and 30mm deep wheels. The di2 is new for me too and what I like most is holding it down to shift through multiple gears, the accurate shifting and of course the noise the front derailleur makes. Because I'm borderline caveman I kept hitting the wrong shift paddles as they're so close together. I have played around with the settings and have now changed my configuration to be similar to etap.
Now; both of the paddles on the left shift down on the rear, both of the right paddles shifts up on the rear, the left hood button shift the big ring down and the right one shifts the big ring up.
I look forward to seeing another review after you've changed some parts around. Keep up the good work

Beautiful bike mate, that definitely looks like a “tool” you should be very proud of and be able to enjoy for quite a while yet.
I have ulteagra and Dura-ace di2 on both of my frames and i have had them for quite a while, after the change from mechanical, I’ll never go back. You may also wanna look at the climbing shifter on the left half close to the stem... buttons facing out... I’ve found that it allows for very natural tactile feel and if you ever find yourself helping another rider with a push, then your right hand is free and you are in a much safe position to do so.

Congratulations Shane. I just bought the same bike about two months ago. Mine is a large and so far, I love it. This bike is quite a bit different than my 2011 Cannondale Synapse which I now have on my Wahoo Kickr for my Zwift rides. I've noticed that the power meter seems to register similar power to my Quark on the Synapse, but I haven't done an in depth comparison. One thing I've notice is that the power meter battery doesn't last 150 hrs as stated in the spec sheet, but that's not a major problem. So far, I love the bike and hope that you do too. I agree that it's a great value. I looked at Specialized and Trek and couldn't justify the difference in price. Cheers!

I was seduced back to TCR a while back. I've got the dodgy Shimano power meter .. I think Ultegra with the Pioneer power meter is a much better $equation! I can't get comfortable with narrow bars - I don't think I could breathe with 38's. Enjoy the new ride ;) .. and I'm be watching your Di2 journey with interest. The first time I tried to upgrade the firmware I killed it, so I'm playing caution for now!

congrats on new bike day. i recently bought the same bike. will be interested to follow your adventures with the giant tubeless tyres.
my tcr came fitted with the gavia AC0 25mm tyres. have had no dramas with the tubeless system. had one cut on the front tyre that wouldn't seal over 65psi, was about 3-4mm long glass cut. ended up removing tyre and putting a lezyne glueless patch over the cut on the inside of the tyre. reinstalled tyre & sealant and haven't had any dramas since.
my tyres are coming up on 2000km. front still looks brand new, rear still has a bit to go.
i have tried (several times) to put a new 28mm gavia AC0 on the rear. the rim/tyre combo is very tight. got it to seal but couldn't get the tyre to bead fully, still had about 20cm on both sides to go.
if i can't get these 28s to fit i am going to try the new GP5000 tubeless in 28mm. the giant 28s fit in the frame easily, but the GP4000 28s balloon out to 31ish mm so will be keen to see if the new GP5000 28s are the same.....
and check the bolts on the drive side power meter (on inside of spider). mine came loose and were giving low power readings.

had tyre in the sun (Chilean summer 30oC), put it into very hot (almost boiling) water to soften.
used soapy water each time. beaded about 80% both sides with airshot. haven't tried with a compressor yet.
did put 140PSI into it with track pump.....

Bought the same bike here in Canada back in Sept. Was lucky enough to do the Festive500 last week while in California. Love the bike, all stock except the saddle, changed to a Toupe. So far so good, love the fit and the ride feel. My TCR is a size small. Power meter like you said is still the big question mark on this bike. My "issues" have been battery life, initially, but after a second/third full charge that seems to have improved. I loaded the latest firmware last week before starting the 500 as well. My concern is that you seem to have to calibrate it before every ride to get what seems to be accurate readings, without doing so the reading are wacked. LOL

Congrats on an absolutly beautifully bike. From my own experience go and do a lot of breaks tests. Owned a disc bike for 2 years. The breaking is so good that it might throw you off when you panic break. I've nearly crashed twice due to breaks just stopping way to good. So try em out and do some serious breaking so you learn how they act.

Happy Christmas from Canada! Sweet bike, that's a beaut! Don't let the silly people who don't know 36cm get you down, just enjoy the aero and stability!

Merry Christmas to you and Vonn mate, very happy you decided to go with the the TCR as I’m seriously considering making this my next bike as i want something a tad quicker (and for a first foray into racing next year ). than my Cannonade Synapse .
Will be looking forward to your thoughts on the power meter as like most peeps on Zwift / Trainer road you just get used to seeing your power figures all the time!

Merry Christmas! Congrats on the new ride! Beautiful bike! I'm deciding between the pro 0 and pro 1 (with Assioma). It basically comes down to Assioma VS Power Pro performance for me...so I'm eagerly awaiting your review on the mystery Power Pro.

Thanks for your choice of new bike. Your purchase is the logical upgrade for my current 2016 rim brake Ultegra mechanical TCR, I await your full reviews with bated breath as I attempt to fund my piggybank. Good to see they gave you the bike tubeless, have to say even so I find the Gavia tyres somewhat “wooden”, I upgraded to Schwalbe One Pro, which in 28mm won’t quite fit my bike but I reckon would go nicely on yours. Enjoy your sunny summer, Happy Xmas from Canada (-12c!)

Congrats Shane, that is one beast of a bike, and that blue paint job is just gorgeous!
PS have you thought about wrapping the commonly chipped areas of the frame (downtube, chainstay etc) in a clear protective tape (I hunk it’s called helicopter tape)

    • @gplama
      @gplama  5 років тому +3

No thoughts of wrapping it... yet. It needs a few scratches so I don’t have worry about it getting more :)
