yeah back in these days Corey used to blow out his vocals a lot. then Melissa Cross came in to save the day and essentially revolutionize metal screaming as a whole. I have a vocal training tool sitting on my desk in front of me designed specifically after some of her lessons with blowing into water with a straw lol
God I miss this Corey. It felt so much more emotional it felt so primal I have searched my entire life to find another band that has that same sound but I can’t. I am not a fan of Corey’s new sound unfortunately but I’m glad he is taking care of himself but nothing will beat this sound.
@@dedo7326The closest you might come to someone who sounds close to Corey's Iowa sound is the vocalist of the band "Left Behind". It's almost there but the band plays more sludge/mid tempo groove metal. But they're really good.
Conan had a lot of very amazing and “controversial” bands play on his show that no other show would allow. He knew the importance of a non conformity anti authority message. We need it now more than ever. Too bad it will never happen on mainstream media ever again.
all these years and this is the time that the 2 missing percussions are absolutely noticeable. So yeah MOM they do need all 9 of them. i remember exactly where i was when i heard this the first time in 2001
Awesome selection, Ken! This was an unbelievable performance for the time. Most of the audience in the studio and at home will be mouthing: "What the heck!", either in silence or out loud. You're completely right: it was a different time. Slipknot's aggression, instrumentation, vocal delivery, precision, timing and mixing was a revelation when their debut album came out in 1998. By the time "Iowa", their second album which "The Heretic Anthem" came from, their sound was well established to those who have explored their music. However, for anyone outside the metal-listening genre, this performance would have been a complete shocker. This is not Metallica type of metal. For stage performance from the same era, try the official live video: ua-cam.com/video/l3GnK3bhBqQ/v-deo.html
Saw these guys back in Tacoma in 2004/2005 and their live show there was just awesome. Sounded just like the album but with the energy of a stadium performance!
I agree the audio on this live performance isn't the best. The "cleanest" sound would probably be the album version. If you want a cleaner or best live performance of this it would probably be from the Disasterpieces Live in London 2002
Fun fact: Max Weinberg, who played drums for Conan and for Bruce Springsteen, had his son Jay with him at this show. This performance inspired Jay to want to play drums, and he joined Slipknot in 2014. That's insane.
Ken, I think Metal is misunderstood too often. Slipknot brings so many topics to the light; e.g. bullying, religion, government, etc. I have been to 8 Slipknot concerts and they only get better. Check out Disasterpiece live in London; it will kick your ass.
I love Slipknot, but he can go from this raw energy, to an acoustic and his voice is amazing. He's amazingly talented. ua-cam.com/video/7p2Zfkx3C8Y/v-deo.html
because an open minded artist should explore all types of music. lots of reactors and vocal coaches have opened up to listening to metal and find they actually enjoy it. granted, maybe not all of it, but at least more then they expected.
Please Ken, be the first to react to Pantera - I'll Cast A Shadow (Live In Seoul 2001). Last song off their last album with a message that is terrifyingly prophetic.
Even for 2001. This performance on a popular late night show was unheard of. Conan did something special with this.
This is before Corey learned to do a Healthy scream.

This is when Corey was drinking three bottles of Jack a day.

Conan was the best, used to get loads of heavy bands on.
Conan was and still is the best ;)
Definitely referring to slipknot as the “demons from des moines” now lmao thanks ken!!
The disasterpieces dvd version of this is the one you wanna check out. That entire show in London in '02 is unmatched to this day.
Agreed. That DVD is epic. They freaking killed it.
Never thought I'd see Conan O'Brien reacting to his own show
all these years and this is the time that the 2 missing percussions are absolutely noticeable. So yeah MOM they do need all 9 of them. i remember exactly where i was when i heard this the first time in 2001
Absolutely incredible performance
This will never not be hilarious. Imagine the normal people in the crowd who were accosted with Iowa
They have so much energy. I love them
"Plastered to the back of their chairs." Best way to describe the crowd in as few words as possible. Good economy of words.
ah, I miss the days when Slipknot had just started taking over the world and late night shows were actually worth watching.
Live in London is the one you'll wish you'd used.

Debut album came out in 1999

What an energy - wow❣
Killswitch engage - the end of heartache
yeah I think Ken would REALLY appeciate Killswitch.
Great reaction! This is one of my favorites by Slipknot.
Joey on drums❤❤❤ killer🙌🏻🙌🏻

But the energy on this performance is easily the best.
Love the cover from Periphery they did with P2!
Yay!!! I bat flapping love this channel 😊
Great video, Ken!

That was a different show
Fun fact you’re wrong. Different show and Jays father was his inspiration to play drums
Oh, sorry, what other late night talk shows did they play Heretic Anthem on?
Slipknot 2009 London react
Awesome!
👀 you sounded like Conan at the end
I saw them live for my first time 1 month after this was filmed

MISTREATED live 1977 Munich DIOs best performance Real Amazing Best Dio performance please do Just look at it before Metal month
Am surprised Sid didn't try anything risky, like, break his feet
Awwwful quality. Amazing performance, but wish it sounded better for you!!!
I love Slipknot, but he can go from this raw energy, to an acoustic and his voice is amazing. He's amazingly talented.
ua-cam.com/video/7p2Zfkx3C8Y/v-deo.html
ua-cam.com/video/GxZwN88EZmE/v-deo.html this one is from the same show but back in early 2000 you would love this one
Corey censors himself twice this performance @0:58 and 6:06
Ken, as a vocal coach, what is going on lately with you reviewing stuff like this?
because an open minded artist should explore all types of music. lots of reactors and vocal coaches have opened up to listening to metal and find they actually enjoy it. granted, maybe not all of it, but at least more then they expected.
It gets views from metal fans like me 😛
Props for going through such a hellacious ride
