This is sad. But there are several reasons why NYC has a housing crisis: 1. Not enough supply to keep up with demand. The population of NYC has increased to 8.5 million people. and the only new construction of homes is for wealthy investors and investment companies that buy them and add the assets to their balance sheets. 2. People who lack marketable job skills and higher education. For people who only have a high school diploma, well, an adequate paying job to support one's self, much less a family, will be virtually impossible to do. Paying rent and other expenses will also be difficult, to say the least. Of course, there is more that I can write on the housing issues in NYC.

And the big city is not the sustainable way, go to small cities/towns where you can get large amount of lands, so you have space for your kids to grow naturally

John, I was pregnant and homeless in 1978. I understand your challenges. I slept in a junkyard. I wasn't a drug or alcohol user, just a victim of circumstances. Too old for foster care at 19 years old and too young for the skills I needed. Without an address, one can't get social services. I say this because if I can make it, you can. Eventually, I found a job, bought land, and built a small cabin for my child and me. I still live here. Since then, I have placed an ad looking for an old one to tear down. Someone contacted me, and I spent a summer tearing their old house down. It took three years of working on the side to rebuild that old lumber to build another small house. I now rent that place out as a vacation rental. This is a good income for me since retirement isn't that much. Follow your dreams and take one step toward them every day. You sound like you have pulled yourself up before and I have no doubt you will succeed at achieving your dreams. Never give up!

Not really the definition of homeless in the US is “An individual or family who lacks a fixed, regular, and adequate nighttime residence.” So if someone is sleeping on someone’s couch for a few days, then moves with someone else for a let’s say a week, then moves into a hotel for a few days they are homeless.
Homeless doesn't mean you're sleeping on the street with nothing. It means you don't have a constant home that is safe and secure and you're not in fear of losing your home.

Why is housing artificially inflated? Because the supply of houses hasn't kept up with the amount of money created, and the regulatory obstacles to building more houses is immense.
Ok so I went to school with John and Zoe. Everyone told Zoe to stay away from John. John was a pot head and was arrested for a Central Park robbery. Maybe the mother was wrong for kicking them out early or maybe it was their choices.
This is a double edge sword, because in order for society to prosper and grow, you need young people like this to have children. Those children are going be consumers in the future, pay taxes that fund social security, they might also end up becoming the care takers of the elderly in the future. At the same time, I couldn't see myself having children while struggling, because all that might happen is the children end up inheriting poverty and struggle, too. I see American society getting harsher and more expensive in the future. Part of the conspiracy around the migrant crisis, I think the government knows they need people to do the jobs people like John and Zoe don't want to do. Ultimately, the children of migrants will reap the success because they will realize the opportunities this country is blessed with and make the best of it through hard work and education.
Lol, These young New Yorkers voted for open borders. Because they are far from the border they thought they won’t be affected. But look at the situation now 😂. Honestly I enjoyed watching this. Those children are NOT going to pay taxes, their parents can't even hold onto a job or a house. Wake up. They will burden an already overburdened welfare system. They need to learn a different way, be responsible, and don't get everything you want the second you want to get it. Plan. Earn your way, work hard. You might say they are trying, well, bringing a child into the world whom you cannot afford to house or feed doesn't equate with that does it - kind of irresponsible
@@peacewarrior1175Hopefully their kids will break the cycle. Then again, we are in a society of instant gratification and attention and their kids might grow with the lack of hard work, sacrifice and not pursuing education as a way of poverty. Children are expensive especially for working people.

I hate to sound rude, but it is incredibly irresponsible to have kids when you are struggling financially! If you can't afford them, DON'T have them! It should NOT be the taxpayers' responsibility to support them...
Actually, if you want to have a healthy society and economy in the long run, you 100% want to incentive people having children (which means offering support). Taxpayer money going to family and children support has the best return on investment you can make.
@cancerino666 yes, people with stable families and incomes. Not those living on handouts from the state. Is it really that hard to tell the difference?
This is what happens when minimum wage does not keep up with inflation. In 1988 when I was 18 years old, I had a minimum wage job and my rent was only about 24% of my income. I didn't have fancy material things, but I never went hungry and always had groceries in my pantry. There is no way that you could do that today and that's a shame.
I proudly support our city's commitment to its social network but the arrival of so many refugees is pushing a system that was already chewing more than it could swallow is having a lot of us reconsider some things, specially the right to housing policy. A policy that was primarily taken advantage by people out of state who traveled to NYC to enter the shelter system. Housing is a human right but it needs to be better planned and funded. The people working these systems are being stretched thin and asked to go far beyond their own internal resources. That's how teachers got burned to the ground. And then we go around telling stories of how great they are for putting their students above themselves and sacrificing huge chunks of their checks to cover the gaps. And I wished I could say its a NYC issue because then it's something that we are doing wrong but am seeing this in every state I travel to. This is what subsidizing big companies has gotten us. I can tell you the majority of the people in shelters in this city are employed. Too many people try to make it out to be a mental health issue or people that "want to live off the system. But the main issues is wages not keeping up with housing cost, and in a country where wages have stagnated for the last 3 plus decades, what else did we expect?
There are thousands of apts in NYC that are empty, reason they are considered rent control and cannot be at market rate However the landlords would need to spend $50K+ to rehab said unit and when the landlord sees the years it would take to recoup they’d rather leave it empty and write off depreciation. If NYC can somehow work that out things would better. One more note also thousands of Public housing apts are also behind in meeting standards to be occupied.
Before you bring kids to your life, you need a steady job and a secure home, not waiting for social assistance, why everyone must chip in for your bad choice?! 🤯
The majority group of homeless ppl in NYC is from abroad. Accepting refugees is okay. However, illegal immigrant situation is out of control now. We cannot save all lives. It is time to focus on taxpayers not legal immigrants.

Why have kids when you don't even have a place to live, especially when you even mention you have family member going thru the same thing. Not to judge but a grown person need to have plans on what to do with their lives. Go to school, get a job, find a place to live that you can afford then find a life partner, get marry and then have kids. Don't blame society if you just want to live life freely without a plan then found yourself in a pit that you can't crawl out off because you have a big family that you can't afford to feed.
Agree they need to take birth control
Poor decision making. Hopefully others make better ones.
There will never be enough housing supply because you will never run out of people looking for a free place to live. Don't feed the bears!

2.) To move to another place takes considerable $. Then you have to hope that everything lines up with a place to live and a job. The job may be here today and gone tomorrow, what happens then? Does this new place have a shelter system or support for homeless residents?

Housing in NYC is extremely expensive. Even with a good job it’s difficult to find a decent apartment.
As a former Manhattanite I love the city and yes, rent is expensive. But if you do not have the right credentials to get a good job there are a lot of other states to move to.

Excuse me DW, this fully furnished apartment is luxury. Homeless is when one is living on the streets.
Not really the definition of homeless in the US is “An individual or family who lacks a fixed, regular, and adequate nighttime residence.” So if someone is sleeping on someone’s couch for a few days, then moves with someone else for a let’s say a week, then moves into a hotel for a few days they are homeless.

Ok so I went to school with John and Zoe. Everyone told Zoe to stay away from John. John was a pot head and was arrested for a Central Park robbery. Maybe the mother was wrong for kicking them out early or maybe it was their choices.
Wait what a robbery seriously??

New York is now the city of Dead Dreams.
I'm sorry for them but I'll never understand why a person have children if the can't give them everything they require.
Young & homeless…everywhere…globally.
It's sad to see so many people in this situation.
