  • Planks…You’re Doing It WRONG
    The plank is one of the most well-known core exercises, and for good reason, they are super simple to perform anywhere, require no equipment and minimal technique, and they are an effective way to train the core muscles for their primary function.
    As with all exercise, there are a few major points that should be recognized, to make this truly an effective core training exercise, instead of low threshold useless crap (as more commonly seen). Since there is no movement in a plank, we are creating stability in good joint positions, therefore POSITION becomes the most important factor here.
    Arbitrarily holding a plank in a bad position will not only do nothing in terms of benefits, but it will actually strengthen and stabilize crappy joint positions, essentially making you worse than just not performing them at all.
    Who wants to spend their time exercising just to end up WORSE than you were before?

    Marvelous video. Great technique to self check. Please introduce the person you’re working with. It’s rude to leave her unnamed when you’re using her as a demonstration.

    watching the video, these are so well done!!

      Thank you! I'm glad you enjoy them. Sorry about the sound quality (echo) on these last few, always trying new locations, we will clean it up next time.

    If the forces of gravity are trying to pull us down to the floor, then why are we squeezing the glutes? Gravity is trying to pull us into hip (lumbar) extension which is what we dont want. Squeezing the glutes only contributes to hip extension. Instead we should be turning on the hip flexors as well as hollowing out the core (as you so rightly point out). Squeezing the glutes is the wrong cue.

    Hi coach PJ,
    Thanks again for your videos. They are helping me a lot. I really would like to know which abs are one of the best to do without equipment. I’m guessing planks are good but could you tell me a few more?Thank you.

    Coach PJ, do you apply the same "pulling" concept on side planks? Driving the forearm down and toward the hip isometrically while keeping the elbow underneath the shoulder? Thanks!

    • @CoachPJNestler
      @CoachPJNestler  7 років тому +4

      Sure do Tanner! Helps to keep the elbow under the shoulder, the humerus centrated in the joint, and create tension in the lats and obliques
