    He starts off at the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum in Chattanooga, Tennessee, home to the Oldest Operating Mainline Steamer in America, Southern 2-8-0 #630, built by the American Locomotive Works in Richmond, VA. in February, 1904. #630 is the 2nd oldest operating steamer in Tennessee, second only to Southern 2-8-0 #154 at the Three Rivers Rambler in Knoxville.

      You contradict yourself. SOU 154 was also built as a mainline steam locomotive.

    At 0:05, OMG! IT'S A F2A CLASS JUBILEE! That is the first footage I've ever seen! Does anyone know if there is any more footage of that loco?

      Streamlined Steamroller Yes, there is a program by Rail Innovations, I beleive its called Steam Memories of Ontario-From the collection of Newt Rossiter, it shows footage of Jubilees in action as well as other CP and CN steam locomotives, and in the background, former CP and CN engineers tell their tales of operating these old Iron Horses.

    Note that most of these Canadian steamers burning oil that was a common sight back in the 1950s when they were being phased out.

    Money is a problem but not the biggest problem. Track to run on is the problem, Canadian engines are usually all friction bearing plus you have to deal with CN and from what I've heard......good luck. CP I have no idea if they would allow it. Because of our climate, outdoor engines are usually in very rough shape unless someone has been taking care of them. I would love to see it if someone could make it happen.

    The gentleman makes the mistake that so many people do, Canadian Pacific and Canadian National are both Railways, Canada hasn't got any Railroads and never has had (I could be wrong there but I don't think so)

    one question, why did steam have to be replaced? Many steamers are more powerful than diesles today.

    • @jppicur
      @jppicur 7 років тому +3

      In short, economics. Diesel-electrics were cheaper and more convenient to run when they came out and, in today's world, would be FAR less expensive to run. Keep in mind there were almost 100 trades involved in running and maintaining steam locomotives -- all union jobs. Getting rid of the unions was the railroads' first priority then, just as it is now.
      Do not try to equate Diesel and steam horsepower. Diesels are far more powerful at slow speeds and do not have to take slack to start a heavy train. Diesels can start a train it would take two or three steam locomotives to start, but Diesels cannot maintain speed like a steamer can. Diesels generate their greatest horsepower at starting, and it drops significantly as they speed up. Modern steam locomotives were designed to develop their maximum horsepower at 40-60 mph.

    Dear Green Frog: As usual, your narration and captions are full of errors. And please note, it was Canadian National RailWAYS and Canadian Pacific RailWAY.

    Regarding your comment about restoring N&W 611 and feeding her that dumbass cockroach....
    I just have one thing to say on that.....
    CAN I WATCH???????
    Being someone who has worked on, and helps maintain a steam locomotive, an important part of our heritage, I really hope you are able to bring #611 back to life!

    N&W BUILT STEAM TO 1958 RAN TO 1965/66

      Sorry, but N&W's last steam locomotive was built in 1952. They last ran in 1960.

    • @jppicur
      @jppicur 7 років тому

      C&O 614 was not even the last steam locomotive built for the C&O. Their last new steam locomotives were 2-6+6-2s built by Baldwin.

    True, but I enjoy playing his game. He comments on steam video's about scrapping them so I insult him or tell him how no one would mind if he got his foot caught in a moving coal stoker. I have nothing personal against him but he can't keep his opinions to himself. Stealing from the worlds most intereting man, I don't usually run trains but when I do, I prefer steam, steam on my friend.

      Not on class 1 railroads. Yes, some steam did, and 844 did, but that wasn't revenue steam.
