You do not need to know how to sew to go to FIT. However you do need to make 2 garments for your portfolio so it might help to get someone to help u through it!
there are many other majors that don't require being able to sew, although I do recommend learning the basics and maybe sewing 1 or 2 pieces just in case you'll have to do it!
i’m gonna off myself i wish i had this kind of guidance sooner in this process because i am applying and it makes this make so much more sense seeing what they expect to see in a portfolio and i’ve been so stressed about what i need to submit
Dude I was so confused when I was applying. And it's okay if your portfolio isn't "perfect". They know that not everyone gets the same guidance and they take that into account. A lot of it I think is based on the amount of potential and talent they see in what you submit.
Thank you for this video! It was very helpful! Beautiful designs as well! May I ask why you don’t go to FIT anymore? I am considering applying for next fall and just trying to hear from as many people as possible their opinion of the school. Thank you so much! :)
Hey! In my fashion sketching class, they taught me the 9 inch head. These drawing look much bigger than mine. Do you remember the specifications of the drawings?
yes totally agree sewing takes a long time, lol.. I can totally relate heheh. I am a fashion designer student also and i enjoy watching this.... I should've watched this before I turn in my final project.🙈 thanks for the idea. I love all your designs. Great job. btw you are very pretty honey
Loved your video! I had a question regarding the sportswear project. They said we need to submit 3-6 images for it, but you have 2 boards…please help me out with it💕
the school where l teach you did 2nd yr level work as a FRESHMAN !!!! entering into a new curriculum , the mid-west has a slow to low trajectory of student expectations. Plus portfolios are not required (or has recently been made optional)!!! wtf is a professor suppose to do w/marginal mid-west skill sets w/the required level of talent is nonexistent ? Thank you...cause this showed me that l wasn't in my head about what "else" needs to change about the school where l work.
my teacher helped me label them! He actually made those two names up for fabric that we didn't know what it was. So you can make up names if you don't know for sure. Just make sure the fabric names will work for whatever your design is
So the front view with fashion figure and back view with flats is enough right. Thank you so much for your vedios it was really super helpful for me to get an idea. Thanks a bunch ❤️❤️
hey a little tip here: 'bull fighters' are NOT a spain thing, they are only present in a province called Navarra for a festival in July. I don't know if you still pursue fashion design but when looking for inspiration from a certain place or culture, remember to properly research it :)
Thank you for the feedback. This was almost 3 years ago by the way, but I just did a quick google search to confirm what you're saying, and according to google "The most well-known form of bullfighting is Spanish-style bullfighting, practiced in SPAIN, Portugal, Southern France, Mexico, Colombia, Ecuador, Venezuela, and Peru". There are also a handful of other links saying bullfighting is a Spanish thing when I look it up today. I did do my research, but I can only know so much from the online resources that I have. Maybe google is wrong.
I liked your portfolio so much!! I would like to know how you have implemented those.have you used photoshop ? Could you please share more details how to create sample portfolio?

Hola, las sevillas y toreros no son típicos de Segovia solo de una parte de España llamada Andalucía, y el invierno con nievo es la época del año que menos vivimos en España, un saludo!!
Wooow, thank u so much. It was super helpful. 🌟💝 But I have a question, what does FIT basically do for students? Cuz based on what you said, you should already know the fabrics and designing and etc. If you could explain a bit more about FIT, it would mean a world. 💙🙏
The fabric swatches were from a few different fabric stores in NYC, but you can really get them from anywhere. You can get super small strips from joanns, and you could also try going to some thrift stores and finding fabrics you like there. The black presentation boards are from BLICK, and you can order them online. I believe they were the size 11x14.
Hello! Your video is really helpful and I wanted to say thank you😊. For the second project we can be more flexible with our designs which means we don’t have any restrictions? For example if I wanted to sketch a ball gown or an outfit that a performer could wear on stage would that be allowed ?
Yes. The second part to the drawing portion has no rules. It's all up to you. Just make sure you have a front/back view and labeled fabrics. I'm glad you enjoyed!
Thank you so much for the information!! I was just wondering how you submitted you portfolio since I live in another state, do I mail them the entire portfolio or is it sending it digitally like in an email?
I’m not making a portfolio or anything but if i was could I use Harry Styles as the model? I think it would be really special and unik but I don’t know if you need to use an actual model
i’m very lost about what i want to have a career in but i thought about how i REALLY love fashion and drawing/art. i also have experience with creating portfolios and colour. i just really don’t know where to start. anyone have any advice?
You don’t have to take my advice but, I am 12 years old and I have gotten into fashion lately and watching a whole bunch of videos. I have no experience either but what I am going to do is just get a sketch book, colored pencils and sketch designs and models in my sketch book. I think it’s a start :)
yes, you can make anything you want. I'd recommend making items that are all different to show that you have skills to make more than 1 thing. Ex: t-shirt, skirt, pants. FIT really looks for technical skills more than creativity. Both are still important though :)
Hi Olivia, I was wondering if you designed your clothing based on the fabric swatches first to make sure they match or went searching at the store for similar fabric design swatches you created after creating the outfits? I was curious because what if I design an outfit and can't find a similar fabric for the swatches? Thanks!!! :)
You should have some fabric ideas in mind before you start shopping for fabric, but don't draw them until you have the swatches. You want the swatches to match your drawings as much as possible.

Theres a drawing portion to the portfolio and a sewing portion. The drawings can be completely different from the sewing projects. The drawings are where you should show off your creativity. The sewing projects should show that you have basic sewing skills. The sewing projects can be simple
its black display board. I draw my figures on marker paper and then glue them onto thicker white paper as a backing to help make the colors more vibrant against the black. Then I cut them out with scissors and an exacto knife and glue them onto the black board.
Thank you so much! It is truly the most helpful video about portfolios!! I have a few questions, since I will be an international student, I will need to send my portfolio in digitally, so do you have any tips on how to get good pictures of it? Also what kind of board did you create it on! Thank You!! ♥️

I have been designing clothes for the longest time now as well. I am so determined to get into FIT. Do you think that my low GPA will not get me accepted? I love fashion and its truly my passion, but I don't do so well in school. :(
I didn't print them, I drew them by hand, and then I cut them out and glued them on. So pretty much yeah. I didn't know how to use digital drawing programs
Pls Olivia Pls, I want to apply to FIT graduate but this portfolio thing is worrying me cos don't hv experience in drawing and coloring. I only know how to sew through self-practicing. Can you offer me help on how I can go about this portfolio thing?
FIT is more construction based than creativity. If you can show you know where seams go on your drawings and zippers and pockets you should be okay if your drawings aren’t super “good”. You should also be conscious of fabric choices you are making because that is an important part of construction. Example: Don’t pick a spandex fabric for a winter coat or pick thicker fabrics for cold climates and thinner fabrics for warmer climates. Show that you know how to construct. I hope that helps!

Do the projects that you sew have to be different from the drawing? I saw in another video that they sewed exactly what they had drawn for their portfolio
Hi! I am wondering do you need to know how to draw really good while making your portfolio? I am a freshman in California and I just wanna know ahead of time:)!
Thank you so much for this, and I aporeciate it. I was just curious if you have to put the real fabrics that you're gonna use on the side, or is it okay if I just put the colors and just label what kind of fabric I'll use?
it should be a 2”x2” square of the actual fabric! if you go to your local fabric store you can ask for a sample piece and it should be free or just a few cents if anything (:
Hi! I was wondering, what was the class you took called? And were there any requirements for the class? Or does it just help for beginners in creating a portfolio from scratch? Also your sketch are great! This video was super helpful:)
It was the pre college program, portfolio class. I don't remember there being any requirements, but it is pretty expensive. Thank you so much! I'm happy it helped because I was SO confused when I was applying

@@aoliviab thanks so much!
Can you still take precollege classes before you even apply ? Or get in? Like if I were to apply for next fall semester I can still take precollege classes?
Yeah, I took the precollege program in the summer, I applied in January, and got in for the fall
I took the precollege class specifically for making my portfolio to apply
Tysm! This was so helpful!
can i apply through the common app?
Heyy I was just wondering if the fabric samples that u used were real or just pictures of the fabric
They were real, but if you can't get the ones you need, and you're submitting online, you might be able to use pictures if they look real enough.
can you submit digital art or does it have to be hand drawn?
I'm not sure about that one. You should see if it specifies on the website
Hello!! I just have a question, does a portfolio have to be in a book form or it isn't necessary?
I dont think so
what kind of markers did you use?
Copic and Chartpak. Chartpack are the BEST for coloring skin
This was beautiful! Do you feel like drawing is a huge key? I have been drawing etc but I feel like I’m not getting anywhere as a artist for fashion design
drawing is a big part of it, but you don't have to be perfect
im worried I want to go to FIT not for fashion design but fashion STYLING and idk what to do.. I cannot draw for the life of me, nor design and fashion styling doesn't exactly require designing but i do need to know some designing and im anxious, any tips? im 16 btw
apply for the fashion business management degree instead of fashion design.
hi! can I just ask where you got your fabric swatches from? did u just go out and buy them all individually?
You can ask for swatches at fabric stores and some will give them for free and some will charge you a few dollars
Illustrations that u have drawn in CAD or Hand illustration?
hand
Do the projects that you sew have to be different from the drawing? I saw in another video that they sewed exactly what they had drawn for their portfolio
I think you can do whatever you want for the sewing projects
How do you apply for the pre degree for FIT
just wanted to ask, did you design any of these digitally? and what app do you use:)
I drew all of these by hand. But I know adobe illustrator is popular for digital design.
Hi! I am wondering do you need to know how to draw really good while making your portfolio? I am a freshman in California and I just wanna know ahead of time:)!
it helps a lot if you're good at it.
Salma Hayek is not spanish tho...
Hey are drawings hand drawn ?how are they perfect and well presented
What did you use
Yes they are by hand. I used colored pencils, and copic and charpak markers
