Oakland high school student Zachary Fernandez made it to the finals on the first season of Project Runway Junior, then headed straight back to Oakland School of the Arts to continue his education as a designer. His newest collection, Kathmandu, was inspired by recovery efforts in Nepal after the devastating 2015 earthquake. Art School followed Fernandez's process as he sketched, sourced fabric, and designed his new project, revealed at a culminating fashion show in spring 2016.
Hi, my name is Zachary Fernandez and I'm currently a fashion student. So I am starting my Kathmandu 2016 collection. My collection's gonna be debuting at my school fashion show, and so I have little under seven weeks to get this all put together. So our school assignment was to pick a city that we wanted to be inspired by for this collection. I ended with Kathmandu, Nepal, all of the trouble that they went through last year was really inspiring and I was able to take those ideas of imbalance and the destruction of culture and apply that to this new collection. These are the pieces that I ended up designing. They're ever-changing and they kind of just are always in flux. My sketching process involves a lot of images, a lot of mixed medias, I like to do collages, watercolors, acrylic paste, it's a real reflection of what my mind looks like. Here you have the final sketches that I've done. The sketching process for me is really a major step between just ideas and kind of this fantasy world that I've created in my mind to really functional wearable pieces. Fabric sourcing is one of my favorite things to do. It's really like a group activity, like meet a couple of friends, we'll just go, we'll explore the city, we'll get inspiration. So I'm looking for like a very pale blue that's almost like very silverish, and then I'm gonna be looking for a very deep, rust orange color. Okay, so I need to find this, but more grayish blue. The fabric store is one of those places that you go in with one idea and one concept and one thought, and you come out with like 500 more. This is it.
    - This is it!
    - This is it.
    - [Girl] Dude!
    - Hey! Yes! So I spend the majority of my time draping and it's definitely a part that will make or break a piece. I take a piece of muslin, which is just a really basic blend fabric, and I started sculpting it to the dress form. And then those mock-ups that I make of the dress form are then fitted to the model, and sometimes I try them on a model, I'm like, this is hideous, I don't know why, it just overpowers her or something happens and that leads to even better ideas and even more just, creativeness. When you design while you create, I just think it takes so much longer and you like pressure yourself so much more. So, my design mind is turned off. And it's just about sewing, and sewing, and sewing, and sewing, and sewing. So after I finish draping, I take a part of that mockup and I totally seam rip it and I re-pattern it, and then I cut out of my real fabric. It's always really nerve-wracking 'cause a lot of times the fabric's all that you have, either the budget doesn't allow for you to get more fabric, or there's simply not anymore left. It has this like box-like structure in it. The box is actually lined with horse-hair so that it can kind of take the shape and that's why I'm kind of trying to like manipulate it right now 'cause it just takes on whatever shape you really need it to. The show, oh the show. Six days, and I'm still cutting up fabric like, I don't think that's normal. There's always going to be that last minute hurry up and finish like state of being. I have a picture in my mind about how this is supposed to go, but who knows if it actually go that way. I think that there can be a lot of different ways to read the look. Obviously you look for like the main things like color, silhouette, is this an evening piece, is this a day piece and you just kind of put the garment and choose certain categories and that really helps people read fashion out, by the time the piece is on the runway I'm already thinking about a whole new collection and I'm really thinking something totally different, but it doesn't really hit me that these people, for them it's the first time that they've seen this. I've spent months and months planning and sketching and putting it together. If I see all these different things in these pieces, but no one else does, then it's kind of sad, but then it's also part of what makes fashion art, is because people see it in so many different ways. We are in my home, studio, bedroom combination in Berkeley, California. I have this look from Project Runway Junior, which was the first episode, and this look for my most recent collection. They really mean a lot to me 'cause they show how much progress I've made within the last four, five months.

since childhood, i didn't knew exactly what i wanted, but i always expressed talent for arts in general, cooking, drawing, playing instrument's, technology. and by the end of ninth grade i had to decide what area i was going to choose,(my school does not offer much choice), and everyone told me , even my art teacher, tatiana choose art's it's your passion(funny thing im a lefty and people find it funny), but there was a challenge, the school not always opens art course, because they think, indirectly, that its like a waste of time and if no more than 15 students chooses it will not open, so we did a signing petition, and even than it didn't open, so i chose as a "plan B" economy, now im on eleventh grade and i was two years without drawing, and i noticed that i felt a bit empty, so one day i decided to start drawing again by myself no classes and its still my passion still what i want to do with life, my mom believes in me , but my dad thinks it should only be my hobby and that its not a "serious" job , but the world has changed we should follow our dreams, harsh times will come we will fall but than we will rise and keep battling, they want me to have a serious job, but i wont be happy, "we work to live, we dont live to work" so our job should be something we like we find interest in, and i believe that we should all have the opportunity to follow our dreams.

Tati Milena Omg I'm actually in the same situation as you!I'm now in the vocational school of economics and I miss the drawing! In class we had a marketing project and I designed everything and do all the creative stuff. That also reminds me of my dream to become a fashion designer since the 6th grade.I really wanna do that but I'm scared about failing and the loss of money...I'm thinking about studying fashion marketing to get the knowledge and a stable job and then I will study again as a fashion designer! But actually I'm not confident about it...

Mimi Vu honestly same I'm starting a vocational school for digital media and broadcast because I love film but I also dont feel confident mostly because I dont feel like I'll be good enough. I'm teaching myself how to sew and my strongest skill is drawing and I really enjoy it but fashion and the arts in general is so competitive I just don't know if I'm good enough to hold out in my own its all a very scary thought

    • @mimivu5581

HøwAbøutNø ? yeah it's a scary and vague way.I can fully understand you...But then I remember a dream I had when my deceased grandma said I should do something with passion. And my passion is to create something! So yeah,it's okay to be insecure but have courage in yourself.Instead of thinking about others, always remember the reason why you choose that way.Now I will try studying fashion design and try to break all the scary dark walls in front of me.Right now I'm not skilled but at least I wanna try and won't regret. And if I might fail I won't make excuses for doing the things I love. You too should choose what you want.I wish you luck and success for everything you want to do in your life.:)

There is a ton of research, labor and love that goes into every single piece prior to production. The type of stitch, hidden or to be seen, etc. Many ideas come in the middle of the night so keep a pencil and pad next to the bed. I have been in the design industry for most of my adult life and my most profitable pieces began as a sketch at three in the morning.

I’ve wanted to be a fashion designer since I was like 4, I’ve always loved design and while I love digital design I think fashion is something that I would never get bored or upset doing. Videos like this are really helping me choose what school to go to. I’m starting high school and I’m very lucky to get a choice of going to my small town high school or go to an amazing charter school that will give me many more opportunities. I’m having a hard time choosing because I don’t know if I want the normal high school experience with dances, band, pep rallies and stuff or if I was to do something that will make me happy in the long run

To be honest . I loved the way you were so 100 percent honest to your work and the uniqueness uh . I'm just blowin away . the power of making a dream imagination into a reality that's a skill of not a normal person but of an extra ordinary person . and I loved it. Me myself I'm a fashion student and I loved the honesty that I felt from your illustrations to your dresses . it really hit me . and I liked it . the faithfulness to your passion is the best way of loving yourself ❤. Stay blessed and stay focused good luck for the future

And for your design for the collection it will not be approved that easy our mentors need to critique our designs and we need to explain and why our design is like that and yeah alot of struggles

I'm currently in 7th grade and I'm stressing about the top three high schools I wanna go to, New world school of arts, DASH or law enforcement memorial high school. Something I worried about is that, I also love theater, and playing guitar and sing and I've dreamed about being a police officer and future detective since I was like? 9 or 10 but, drawing has always seem to be my passion, I auditioned to be in the magnet art program without my understanding when I was in 5th grade, and ever since then its been amazing but the one thing I was stressing about was if one day I get into NWSA and pass visual arts. . what do I do after? But when I first saw this video and saw your dresses and everything there was just a happy filling in my heart. I'm hoping by the end of my 8th grade year, after fulfilling my experience between my 3rd year of 2-D/3-D magnet art, 1st year of theater, and 2nd year of Guitar ill be able to decided, which I wan't to be my life choice and which I just want to be strong hobbies I want to do in my life.

Start by making simple pieces. Like get an old shirt and draw on it with markers. Once you start to do this people would want some of your works , so you can start selling or they can give you clothing and you do requests for them.
That's how I started and now I have a mini business in my town. Sure it's small but I'm known around here. :)
Once you have enough money now you can start with original pieces.
