I love when they talk about the little details they add like Ellie singing being slightly off. I didn’t even notice it but I don’t need to notice it. But once you do it makes you appreciate the effort that was put into this show. They truly made this show with love and I really appreciate that!
The work Timothy and Emily have done on this show is so good I'm going to be using it as an example of what to do for a long long time. Thank you so much for getting them for this interview. This is exactly the kind of information I love hearing about regarding the process. Great stuff, and thanks to Timothy and Emily for taking the time to share.
Just the shot selections involving dust are perfection. Bill dining at his small eat-in table watching monitors while dust gathers in his ancestors' dining room. Frank running his finger through the dust on the dining room mantle and seeing potential and purpose. Bill and Frank dining in their airy, lovingly cared-for dining room for the last time. Joel and Ellie entering the again-dusty room, with the mantle especially highlighted. The dust on the mantle isn't particularly highlighted but the dust all around the space is a little bit shroud-like. Ellie surveying the room a spotting a (shorter-term) purpose, the letter. Ellie sliding the key fob across the now-dusty dining table, cutting a small trail in the accumulated dust. Joel picking up the key, representing HIS purpose, marking another trail in the dust with his knuckles.
I enjoyed how the Bill and Frank segment weaved between Tim’s breakdown and the end scenes. The commentary and music worked so well together. The insight gives so much more depth to the sequence. Very well done!
This is such an insightful interview. I love hearing about the decisions they made for each shot shown. Non-editors don't always understand how much thought goes into EVERY single cut.
that cut at the end with that cat tho this video was so well made amazing , my brain is fully exploding to even merely visualize what editing choices you made to edit this episode about editing last of us good lord . learnt so much from it thanks !
That shot of Ellie & Riley’s feet stood out to me for an interesting reason. The entire time, it added to my anxiety because I thought they were going to fall through the glass. Even though I know this didn’t happen in the DLC, I was still so anxious throughout it! That shot made me feel tension & dread of the moment in such a different way. So awesome to have the context as to why they included it! Excellent episode guys 👏
As a student of Hayden’s editing style, top cheers for how he crafted the Bill and Frank explanation. I felt the emotional moments of Timothy’s description and it felt like we were experiencing the Vision of what Timothy wanted to convey. When the moment was over I visibly felt like I was leaving a concert back into the real world.
Hahahaha having the final discussion about Bill/Frank and then finishing with the cat. Genius way to go from an emotional discussion and finishing with a big smile at the kitty. Great episode guys
My favourite things from this video: 1. To write action, isolate the characters and the action; place the action in the background. 2. Frame your surprise/threat reveals using the other character's emotional response. 3. Mini-mystery or barely withholding information. Make the viewer feel like they earned the payoff by holding for the expected reaction and framing the reveal using the character. 4. Use show-don't-tell with the feelings being felt in the scene. 5. Choose your ingredient. Do not skip the onions. #MagentaMarker 6. To heighten connection, start with visible disconnection/disengagement. Contrasting emotions 7. Release a well of emotions for maximum impact. 8. Focus on your characters' experiences - the audience will follow.
As someone who started editing roughly about a year ago, I remember all the videos saying "Cut to the beat or on the action," only to then say, "These are guidelines, not rules, so break them when it makes sense." This is a prime example of breaking those guidelines and shows how strong of an impact it can have. I definitely felt the build-up to the kiss for Ellie. Ellie's "I got you" being slightly off is such a genius touch. Man, episode 3 is a MASTERPIECE. At first, I was upset it varied so far away from the game version, and really missed the banter between Bill and Ellie, but by the end I was fully sold and invested. It is such a beautiful love story. Also, I didn't even realize the hole was not being covered.
This video was AMAZING. I love love hearing the editors perspective on film and TV. They’re so undercelebrated but have a ginormous part in making or breaking the movie. I also love that they had a queer woman editing some of the scenes. You don’t think that kind of representation would matter in an editing chair but it does bring an authentic perspective to the cut.
Great episode! love the term "mini mystery" for holding on a shot and withholding the detail. Love the break down on this one, it really articulated the thoughts and creative work editors have to offer if given the chance.
So much insight from the editors of my favorite show of the year so far. The break down of the Bill and Frank episode and seeing how the editing choices really made the impact of that ending so emotional made me realize why I love editing so much. Also, I'm currently doing Jordan's The Editing Formula course and hearing them refer to the dailys as ingredients was very familiar.
To be honest, The Last Of Us is my favourite video game & as a filmmaker/editor they choose the right people, this made me want to watch the show now. The editors talking about why each shot matters, and adding markers for when you see emotion in the character such as in Joel & Bill. This podcast really teaches us things that I would have never thought of doing.
You guys are pure diamonds.Really thank you for the video ! I learned alot even though I'm from across the world here in Thailand. And that's crazy on how far the impact from your knowledges and mindsets from this video can go !
Loved hearing Emily and Tim talk about their approach to editing the show. The Last of Us is my fave franchise and the story means so much to me. Wonderful podcast.
ive seen a lot of hype for this show but having never played the game i held off on it decided to watch this to try and gauge my interest and well, yea you could say im interested now loved the cut by cut breakdowns in this, very inspiring
Hey gang, how come this video doesn't have closed captioning? Normally UA-cam does auto captioning after a few hours, so not sure why this doesn't have it yet.
The editing in the show is dogshit. They constantly cut all over the place and never direct the viewers attention to anything interesting. Granted, the writing and general filming style used didn't do them any favors. I'd also bet the lackluster performances didn't help either. At the end of the day it's all approved by the directors, so that fact that it's terrible isn't necessarily the editors fault.
I love when they talk about the little details they add like Ellie singing being slightly off. I didn’t even notice it but I don’t need to notice it. But once you do it makes you appreciate the effort that was put into this show. They truly made this show with love and I really appreciate that!
You don't always see the little details, but you FEEL the little details. 💯
Hearing the thought process behind the Bill & Frank episode makes it even more impactful...from the acting, to the lighting, to the editing...so good.
This podcast is film school, u explaining every point in the video really helps to understand the concepts of editing🔥❤️
This is the best compliment you could give us! Thank you!
This was a MASTERCLASS. Thank you all. Timothy and Emily, you are incredible.

Tim and Emily are world class. Their passion for these characters is so palpable and we can see why they were chosen to bring this story to life.
sooooo you're gonna constantly cut all over the place with no justifiable purpose behind them whatsoever?
Maan I almost cried at the Bill & Frank scene breakdown
I love that you edited the whole video, it was such an immersive experience

Change thumbnail to an actual zombie
It was but we no one clicked on it so we had to change it to someone with star pull. Live and learn. 🤷
😂😂 "if you're reading this subscribe". Brilliant guys
Hi Hayden :)
Hi.
Well, this is great but they are just editors, they have little to final say of ANY shot. They are mostly just slaves to what the producers want.
Is every single character, producer, writer, and editor required to be part of the Alphabet Mafia?!?
