I do the same thing with the locking ring on my Opinel, since the metal on the bottle cap is way too soft to damage it. Good thinking!

You can use just about anything to open a bottle even the right stick

Yes I do on my website nativesurvival.com they are handmade by a single person in my family, she makes batches of 4-5 at a time, we're sold out currently as they sell out pretty quick until the next batch.
