TW: History of Japanese war crimes in Korea. Great commentary and review, you really covered everything nicely. This isn’t typically how Koreans deal with disrespectful tourists. This was a special circumstance because of the statue. Japan actively tried to erase their memory, denying everything, and then claiming these women chose to be prostitutes for payment. (What kidnapped 14 year old chooses to be a prostitute for the men who murdered their families?) Notice the statue is of a child, because they were children. So when people wanted to raise statues to remember these women, Japan fought it hard, screaming that it was an unforgivable disrespectful slap in the face. Every time people tried to publish any new stories, articles, or educate the public, Japan took major issue with it. It took 3 generations before the grandchildren of these women finally were like, no, we are not going to let you disappear and we’re not going to pretend it didn’t happen. So, Somali really took the brunt of all the rage and resentment Koreans feel toward Japan refusing to own the war crimes they committed in Korea.
"Japan fought it hard, screaming that it was an unforgivable disrespectful slap in the face." You know, the unforgivable disrespectful slap in the face part might be the kidnapping and systematic rape part? Japan's conduct on this just enranges me particularily as a German. Nevermind a Kraut past resident of Nanjing of all places. It's unfathomable what better for everyone could have been if Japan had taken just another one out of our book and owned up, including in their defense in dealing with the common strategic threat against them from a past home country of mine.
@SpammytheHedgehog lol, umm nope he isn't Black American aka African American INSTEAD he's a African Immigrant from Somalia so he will be deported from the US when Donald Trump takes his oath of office 😂😂😂
Hi, South Korean here. I feel like that guy actually saved because of arresting if I’m being honest. We have genuine xenophobic, racist people out there, and due to historical events so many people are willing to let it slide if it seems deserving. So if he wasn’t arrested, worst case scenario would’ve been possible. If he goes to court, it’s possible he could pay up, but if we against him for getting away, and we have been sensitive about Americans messing around here and getting away, then he will actually locked up and do prison time.
@@SunshineTheLover as I said, if our government didn’t arrested him, even worse could’ve been possible 😓 maybe gov actually lock him up to save the life 🫤 can’t let this go, because that will make us look funny, but can’t let him to actually, gone.
@@dotaparkarreting him to be locked up would be an international thing and most likely just deport him back to the US. The US doesn't like our citizens being arrested in foreign countries especially with international attention to it.
I genuinely feel like this is one of the reasons why the government was forced to step in. I feel like to some extent they knew if they didn't do something, someone else who is more extreme would. So they had to arrest him to keep him safe while they investigate the situation and issue a verdict.
If Johnny Somali has to learn about prison in the ROK, I definitely want it live streamed. It's a win-win; Johnny gets that attention he's been craving, and everyone who watches this kind of thing gets educated.
South korean men are Massively conservative right now. Mandatory military service combined with conservative values... and you insult them? Good luck kid
They hate all foreigners in general bro. There's literal restaurants and places there where they don't allow any brown people (Pakistani/Indians) in. Even the brown guy in Squid Game was meant to represent South Asian workers that get exploited by Korean employers.
Too late. I went to school with a bunch of them and they were more racist than the white kids. Btw I was just a shy black girl and never provoked them.
Xevi is honesty one of the most objective channels on the spot. Not only does he ONLY tackle the most diverse crazy topics, not only does he put it in the MOST straight forward way. But he always keeps his opinion out of it 🙏🏻🙏🏻
I know right. I just discovered him myself. He's the goat of explaining complex issues quickly so we can understand without watching some hour long video.
It's also important to note that the Japanese government still hasn't apologized for the actions of the Japanese Imperial Army during WW2, and a lot of denial of these atrocities still exists in Japan today. It's part of why the relations between Japan and China (plus both Koreas) aren't great right now.
I agree with your opinion as a Japanese.we must reflect our historical crime deeply then apologize Korea and China two beautiful countries.also we promised renunciation of war eternally for the world. I love Japan to be nice to every countries....
GREAT RECAP but I challenge one part of his narration; American attitude towards a prison sentence. Pretty sure any pole you take you’ll find most Americans not only would be OKAY with prison but be happy to ban him from social media for life. In fact the Korean guy who beat him up could make some seriously money if he opens up a go-fund-me page.
Doing that in the Philippines, the birthplace of Arnis, a martial art specialized in weapons, where the original butterfly knife was made 🔪. He definitely would be ending up on a ditch of a sewer canal.
Yeah I think people forget that Korean men are literally ready to get drafted into a war with North Korea at any second,. After their mandatory service, they have to go back for continuous training for fitness and shooting and combat. I didn’t know about that until recently when I went to Korea last summer but now that I think about it, it makes sense. So young civilian Korean men, are literally ready for war
He mocked a statue dedicated to tens if not hundreds of thousands of women who were kidnapped, raped and forced into being sex slaves. It's like someone going to Ground Zero in NYC and yelling an Islamic prayer or pissing on the memorial.

I have the opposite opinion. The n-word is so sensationalized by American culture that most other forms of racism are seemingly viewed as"less bad." As Xevi said in the beginning, Japan, S. Korea, Israel, etc. are all different places with vastly different reactions to disrespect/racism. Imo Korea is just doing what Japan should have done. **(I don't condone calling anyone a racial slur)**

"Japan fought it hard, screaming that it was an unforgivable disrespectful slap in the face."
You know, the unforgivable disrespectful slap in the face part might be the kidnapping and systematic rape part?
Japan's conduct on this just enranges me particularily as a German. Nevermind a Kraut past resident of Nanjing of all places.
It's unfathomable what better for everyone could have been if Japan had taken just another one out of our book and owned up, including in their defense in dealing with the common strategic threat against them from a past home country of mine.
Thank you for some real context
Americans, Ethiopians & Somalians: Take Johnny. We don't claim him.
He isn’t even African
@SpammytheHedgehog lol, umm nope he isn't Black American aka African American INSTEAD he's a African Immigrant from Somalia so he will be deported from the US when Donald Trump takes his oath of office 😂😂😂

American here, we dont claim him either
he isn't Black American aka African American he's an immigrant African.
If he goes to court, it’s possible he could pay up, but if we against him for getting away, and we have been sensitive about Americans messing around here and getting away, then he will actually locked up and do prison time.
i hope they do lock him up
@@SunshineTheLover as I said, if our government didn’t arrested him, even worse could’ve been possible 😓 maybe gov actually lock him up to save the life 🫤 can’t let this go, because that will make us look funny, but can’t let him to actually, gone.
i sure do hope they put him to jail for 10+ years
@@dotaparkarreting him to be locked up would be an international thing and most likely just deport him back to the US.
Why not lock Johnny up as a prank?
And a few years later say "it was just a prank, you can go now".

Too late. I went to school with a bunch of them and they were more racist than the white kids. Btw I was just a shy black girl and never provoked them.

It's also important to note that the Japanese government still hasn't apologized for the actions of the Japanese Imperial Army during WW2, and a lot of denial of these atrocities still exists in Japan today. It's part of why the relations between Japan and China (plus both Koreas) aren't great right now.
If they would have just arrested him when he was there, a lot less people would know. Not that it’s a bad thing
Not skibidi 😢
Ya. Most ppl won’t understand context

GREAT RECAP but I challenge one part of his narration; American attitude towards a prison sentence.
Pretty sure any pole you take you’ll find most Americans not only would be OKAY with prison but be
happy to ban him from social media for life. In fact the Korean guy who beat him up could make some

Yeah...that's actually pretty disturbing.
I have the opposite opinion. The n-word is so sensationalized by American culture that most other forms of racism are seemingly viewed as"less bad."
As Xevi said in the beginning, Japan, S. Korea, Israel, etc. are all different places with vastly different reactions to disrespect/racism. Imo Korea is just doing what Japan should have done.
**(I don't condone calling anyone a racial slur)**
@@jishwah1889 so what exactly are you saying Japan should’ve done? Cuz it sounds like you’re saying the racism by Koreans was warranted. It sounds like you’re condoning calling him a slur, but that can’t be what you’re saying, right? But that would be the “opposite opinion” to mine, which you said you have, soooo?
And btw, the reason the word is “sensationalized” in America more than other racism, is because of America’s obvious racist past. Only one race was enslaved in chattel slavery. What are you saying?
@@RagnarLoudpak1) arrest him of course. In the US we arrest people for being public nuisances (because it's a crime).
2). My point was his actions, in Korean cultural, doubling down after disrespecting the statues for what they mean, is equal to any slur. That's my opinion on racism through a global lens between Koreans and an African American. I stated I don't condone saying slurs and I don't condone racism either.
@@jishwah1889 I mean, obviously the statue thing was wildly disrespectful. But I wouldn’t call it racist. Now, to be clear, I’m NOT saying it was any better, but I just don’t see it as racism by definition.
