    Man, it's really awesome to hear Mike Mearls talk about lore in D&D. The way he explains it, makes it seem like its actual history. "we dont know" "its believed" 10/10

      That's nice to listen to, if we weren't hearing it from a developer. If these were approached from a point of "oh he's what Xanather or Volo has found out" but these are "hey Mr.Developer, can you answer some questions?" and he says "Yeah sure! I uhh, I don't know."

      Dungeon Dad - Yeah, Mike is the master of saying a bit without ever saying full detail. Unlike Jeremy, who sometimes speaks from on high like "This is the way it is, and no different."
      Don't get me wrong, I love both of them talking, but Mike seems to take pleasure in not saying things.

      Like I say - I love both of them giving us any information that they are willing to give. And I absolutely love Mike's grasp of lore. For feel or colour of the universe, I will talk to Mike every time. But for strict rules interpretations I will listen to Jeremy.

    I homebrew the worship of Bahamut and Tiamat in my settings to be a bit more linked - Bahamut represents aspects of loyalty, caution, and wisdom, while Tiamat represents facets of courage, passion, and ambition. Dragonborn tend to invoke their blessings situationally. But I think it's totally fine if Tiamat, the actual monster, is Chaotic Evil because who the Hells cares how they worship her as long as they worship her? At least that's fun for me, hehe.

      I've done something similar in my campaign. Bahamut is worshipped for being a god of duty, order, peace, contentedness and Tiamat is a goddess worshipped for change, personal growth, power, and discontent.
      They are the two primary deities in my campaign and are intended to balance each other out, but of course, I have plot threads working to make Tiamat tip the power in her favor and unbalance the pantheon and unveiling her as being a god of true chaos and evil.
      I've also renamed them to keep this all hidden from my players.

      Tying in the old real world creation myth of Tiamat and Apsu from Babylonian religion can be really useful with them too! Ive used it in the past with Dragonborn worshippers believing that their union, chaos and order, the sea and the land, begat the lesser races, but her getting jealous of their attention tried to slay them and return it to just they two. Bahamut interjects himself to protect them all, his avatar is slain, and its the anger and grief and guilt that drives her mad, bent on ending it all and remaking things for dragonkind alone.

    "When you go to the other planes, there's no plane of dragons."
    Dragon Eyrie anyone?
    An Outer Plane for dragons might not exist *now* that the devs have scrapped the Forgotten Realms' unique cosmology, but I'm pretty sure that it *did* exist up until the Sundering/Spellplague/whatever in FR canon.

    I mean, on a far away distant world in an inaccessible crystal sphere unknown to those who travelled the phlogiston, a champion of Paladine stood against Takhisis and her dragonarmies with the aid of Paladine and banished her to the Abyss.
    I mean... Bahamut. Some champion of Bahamut. Uh. Banished... Tiamat... Yes.
    Yeeeees.
    To Avernus.
    Yeeeeeeeeees.

    • @khellendross3573
      @khellendross3573 6 років тому +3

      You actually hit upon one key difference in the lore there. In Dragonlance lore Takhsis resides in the Abyss, home to demons. In the 5E world Tiamat is imprisoned in Avernus which is one of the Nine Layers of Hell, home to devils. This may seem a small detail except that devils and demons hate each other.

    • @AuntieHauntieGames
      @AuntieHauntieGames 6 років тому +1

      Yup.
      I think the reasoning there is that Krynn does not have all the creatures in D&D (like not having lycanthropes or - I thiiiiink - orcs) and devils are specifically not present there.

    Tiamat (from Rise of Tiamat, not Fizban's) is a CR 30 creature, but don't be fooled. This challenge rating was calculated based on several specific circumstances unique to the adventure Rise of Tiamat. If you use the stat block without context, you will likely TPK your players by accident.

    I'm working on a homebrew campaign that has a new schism of the Cult of the Dragon, which would be more focused on holding territory in the Forgotten Realms. But really, it takes an ideological shift for Tiamat worshipers to a) not emulate their deity and hoard wealth, or b) give up all their wealth (ideally) to appease their deity. The Cult has to greatly suppress those tenets in order to have any creative-building power.

    They really messed up Tiamats lore big time. In 3rd edition FR Tiamat had domains in both a Plane called Dragon's Eiyrie, and in the Untheric Pantheons Plane called Zigguraxus. In 4th edition Tiamat she was in Banehold serving Bane. Now she's been trapped in the Hells and have been retconned into having been there for a very long time.

    Tiamat looks so cool, and her story of being the mother of all chromatic dragons makes her sound so ancient and powerful. She is the antithesis of Bahamut. Leave it at that! The whole nine hells and additional story hooks make no sense, don't fit the dragon theme, and trivialize an iconic big bad. Wizards what are you guys doing??? Just leave her as a cool big ass dragon.

  • @TheDiasteel

    I love the duality of the conflict between Bahamut and Tiamat. It creates such a unique platform for characters to grow and develop in strange and unique ways. The Dragonborn Ranger/Gunslinger I am OCing for CR's second campaign had his home destroyed by Vorugal when he was young but Arkhan appeared with the Hand of Vecna preaching about Tiamat to the huddled masses of displaced dragonborn and they sworn into his cult raiding and kidnapping people for the cults experiments with Dragonblood and creating halfdragons.
    Just prior to campagin 2 he was part of one such raid during which he was assaulted but a small child who began screaming the same words at him that he once screamed at Vorugal when Draconia fell. This shattering epiphany cause him to flee the cult, and his family. looking back at the monster he allowed himself to become he swore to use the tools that the cult tought him to bring them down he now seeks the aid of metallic dragons to create the first metallic guard drake what he likes to call "A living middle finger to everything Tiamats cult stands for"

    So what would happen if the dragons and Tiamat tried overthrowing the realms. Like what would have to happen for Tiamat to finally command dragons to conquer the material plane and what would be the ramifications of that. I have to imagine its because she doesn't think she would survive Azmodeus and his armies so what would she need to do it. Maybe the dragons who fled during the Dragon and Giant war could come back or she could find a way to resurrect them. Or perhaps, since belief in a god gives that god power maybe she could grow her cult of worshipers enough that she does have the power to take hell. Just a weird thought, there's probably an adventure module out there that does something similar to that.

    What I always found interesting is; on Tiamat's statblock provided in rise of Tiamat; she is classified as a fiend, not a dragon. Does this mean that Tiamat was always in the nine hells or the nine hells turns those who are imprisoned in them into fiends? Does the same logic also go for Bahamut making him a celestial?

      There are two likely scenarios:
      1. It's left unknown for story reasons. Leaving something mysterious makes the world more believable. It's unlikely there were written records of this, so why should most people know? If most people don't know, then why does the player need to know?
      2. It's left open for DMs to put in whatever they want.

They are the most powerful beings in the mortal realms but they are also territorial and solitary, dragons don't want other dragons around and thats why other social races like humans can proliferate and overrun an area while the lone dragon slumbers on its hoard largely uninterested in the pests until they get too annoying.
    and well if a dragon is slain, the other dragons arent going to mourn, they'll just see an opportunity to grab a bigger hoard

      It's simply because they're the same deity, just in different worlds.... put simply when the dragonlance series was written the authors couldn't use the name Tiamat because there were copyright issues in place. Takhisis is to Tiamat as Paladine is to Bahamut.

    • @khellendross3573
      @khellendross3573 6 років тому

      what copyright issues, the books were released by TSR and Dragonlance was an official campaign setting.... I think the real answer is that Dragonlance was based on Weiss and Hickman's own home campaign and they had Takhsis as the queen of dragons on Krynn (just as I have homebrewed a few select gods for my home campaign). However as time when on it became clear that there were a few of the gods in the Pantheon of Krynn that were identical to the original D&D gods.
      Its funny that Arkhan is mentioned as Joe has said numerous times that he sees Arkhan as a follower of Takhsis but I guess in order to make things less confusing to the masses he just used Tiamat. (He's a big Dragonlance fan).

    one of my favorite campaigns i've ever been involved in was when my half orc monk, a half fae-half elf rogue/paladin, and a gnome paladin had to go 100 years into the future to a doomed timeline. this timeline was doomed because tiamat was in the process of eating the world. so, that was cool.

    Tee-uh-maht. Not Tee-uh-matt.
    I wish Mike had gone into how Tiamat became a part of the D&D game, and her Sumerian origin in real world mythology. There’s some great stuff in Sumerian myth that can inspire a lot of ideas for a DM.

    If you’re great dragons not ruling over a great span of land with armies of other creatures. You’re doing something wrong.
    Dragons are not some dumb creature who sleeps under a rock waiting for an adventurer to come around to slay the damn thing.
    Dragons are very intelligent, methodical, charismatic beans that has a great deal influence. Tons of experience and knowledge over the years they have lived. Able to cast insane amount of spells without the need to prepare or need material components for. Commanding great armies to protect their land and the dragon itself.
    Dragons are made more for role playing, building an adventure around the dragon.
