The orc origin story for the orcs is my favorite story in the game. To paraphrase:
Each of the creator gods met at creation of the prime material. the dwarves, elves, gnomes, halflings, humans and orcs met to draw lots to determine which parts of the world was to be the birthright of their children. Elves got the forests, dwarves the mountains, humans a smattering of places and the roads between them, gnomes the caves and gullies, halflings the hills and prairies. Gruumsh looked upon the offerings and grimaced. There was nowhere left for the orcs. Gruumsh was mocked and insulted by the others for being so outsmarted and was enraged over the others cheating him. He lifted his spear, blasted the plains and made wastes, and struck into the world caves and ravines, claiming these lands for his orcs, to grow strong and take everything from his enemies. Gruumsh created Orcs out of spite for other gods, and on impulse stuck them alone in the harshest terrain on the world.

I like that this video illustrates that a lot of the "cannon-fodder" that get used in campaigns actually have depth to them. When I run campaigns, I have a very firm self-imposed rule never to play kobolds, goblins, or orcs as simple, cookie-cutter, hollow bad guys. Goblins can be negotiated with, kobolds can be bribed and bargained with, orcs can be impressed by strength from non-orcs, and so on. I also make sure that most encounters can be solved without violence if my players are creative.

Orcs are fantastic. They can totally fill that slot of generic bad guy if you need them to, but just beneath the surface they are a potentially really interesting tribal society.

I See Orcs As Being One Of The Most Misunderstood Of The Races In A "The World Fears Us As Monsters,So We Will Be The Monsters That They Fear" Sort Of Way. You Can Imagine The Kind Of Racism Even The Peaceful,Co-Existing Orcs Suffer From People That Think All Orcs Are Just Big,Dumb Bruits That Will Eat Your Children And After Raiding Your Corpse.

Luthic is brutally cunning, while Gruumsh is cunningly brutal.
I sort of see the Orcs as having lots of elements of old Norse culture to them. You have a people that worship gods of war (complete with a one-eyed, spear-wielding god of war and storms as the patriarch as their pantheon and a goddess of fertility and protection as the wife of the one-eyed god), who come from lands most would consider inhospitable to explore and conquer more pleasant lands, and outsiders that haven't studied their culture typically view them as nothing more than barbarians and savages.

Thar, is my favorite Orc and Orog setting. The promise of a nation, a history as kingdom elites but checked by internal war and human realms. The Ogre foe is constant and Goblin's bar meaningful progress. Great Orc chieftains and raiding parties on caravan traffic. Desolation and death, and no reason someone couldn't rise to claim the mantle of Tharkul. Great stuff!

  • @jackservans6906

Ever notice that the orc pantheon mirrors the Norse pantheon? Grummsh, like Odin, lost an eye and serves as a fatherly deity of battle. Thor and Bahgtru are both the hot-headed gods of strength that are considered the sons of the father deity. Tyr and Ilneval are both gods of strategy that serve to the head of the pantheon loyally. Frigg and Luthic are both mother deities who are married to the head of the pantheon and serve as powers behind the throne. Yurtus is a deity of death and disease who's entire body looks like a rotting corpse other than his white hands, similar to how Hel has half her body as a rotting corpse and a half as a normal woman. Finally, Shargaas is a assassin deity baring some resemblance to Loki, although this comparison is probably the weakest.

I've really come to like the idea of Orcs as boar-people that was shown in 1st edition D&D and has continued in Japanese media; it makes them stand out more from similar humanoid creatures like trolls, ogres, and goblinoids. Additionally, having orcs being descended from the likes of wild boars does a lot to explain many of their key features (tusks, aggression, tenacity, adaptability, etc) and possessing the same talent for explosive breeding would explain both why they're always coming into conflict with everyone else and why their race always manages to survive and bounce back from those conflicts (hence motherhood would be a very important and highly respected aspect of Orcish culture just as it's described here).

So I play an Orc Druid in a planewalking campaign, and we have it so that Orcs actually have a very weak and latent ancestral memory, and a fortunate few get to relive pivotal moments in the lives of their ancestors. However Orcish culture being as repressive and destructive as it is, even the Orcs themselves barely understand it as incidents are rare enough and even rarer still do they take the time to talk and reflect upon them. To most it is a random occurrence that is seen as a sign of favour by one's forefathers (or, depending on the content of the memory, a curse). My character, being one of the clan shamans, has long believed that the memory is more than that, that it is the most powerful feature of Orcish nature, and if they could consistently tap into this power they could become the greatest civilisation across the planes, limitless in potential. If you're familiar with the Society of Sensation from Sigil, his philosophy is very much in line with that, in that as far as he is concerned, lived experiences are the most valuable currency in the multiverse, and the only way to truly understand anything.
My character left his tribe to exercise and hone this potential, and his mission is to explore and find what it REALLY means to be an Orc in this context, and to find what a wholesome existence looks like with this outlook. He wants to rewrite the rules for his kin, and elevate them from petty squabbles and short-sighted power games into a race that can be seen as the forefront of civilisation, with wisdom spanning eons as nothing is forgotten.
I write this because watching this, I realised it is totally within the realms of possibility for him to literally meet his maker as he makes his way through the planes. His maker, but also the ideological vice that holds his kin in a state of stagnation. I hope, if that meeting does occur... Gruumsh has another eye going spare. He might need it after I'm done with him.

Robert Macdonald There's a difference between being in one of the optional supplemental books and being in the core rulebook. Orcs, Goblinoids, and Kolbolds are as core to DnD as any of the other core races. But if you wanna play one you gotta buy an extra book. Plus there's a good chance if you are in a game where the DM doesn't have the extra books playing a one of them is less likely.

    • @robertmacdonald5496
      @robertmacdonald5496 7 років тому +3

Johnathon Crines But here's the thing: they're not common or core adventurer races. In most fantasy worlds such creatures do not leave the tribe or go crusading against evil. A world where that did happen would be considered an alternative view on traditional fantasy, unless you were playing an evil campaign. The majority of adventuring bands are good or neutral, and the majority of them are composed of classic heroic or adventuring races. The PHB is big and expensive enough, extending the core player races section by a ton of pages to make room for rare adventurer races doesn't make much sense, especially when for the majority of those races non-evil individuals are considered a rarity.

Orcs are not inherently evil, and the idea gives players MORE to play with. My current character, a Triton, is in a relationship with an Orc whose life he saved. Took him a while for the Orc to get along with him, but it worked, and it made our DM have more ideas with the characters. Now the two are expecting ugly half Triton and Orc babies together lol.

I like Orcs with nuance. If you go the brutish Orc path, give them something else to go with it. Dont just throw a “big beefy dude” with nothing else in the story. Make him have connections with demons. Make him use really scrappy looking armor and constantly scavenging for better armor in a weird kleptomaniac “my armor is my trophy case” dude. Make him at least have a super badass weapon with big history.

It's things like this that make me so despise pseudo-intellectual Progressivism. The fact that otherwise intelligent people subscribe to it is what makes it simultaneously so infuriating and dangerous.
Here's the thing: what you just said is basically the most genuinely racist thing you could possibly say or think.
First of all, merely the idea of collectively referring to all non-white people as "POC" is abhorrent to me. You are taking a group of nearly 6 billion people and slapping the OTHER label on them because your view of the world is skewed in such a way that you think it's a good thing to do. Not only that, you're also implying that people who don't fit under this umbrella (white people), are in some way a homogenous group which is definable only by a single shared characteristic. Given that this characteristic is skin color, and given that you're using the same singular consideration when you group every other human being on Earth into a single group, the only possible conclusion is that you're viewing the world from a fundamentally racist view point, and this view point is so lacking in self awareness that you think you're posing a legitimate question and combatting ignorance when you ask a fundamentally invalid and ignorant question.
What you are doing is the equivalent of looking the movie "Inside Out" and proclaiming that the movie is racist because you've decided that each emotion is a racist caricature. Nevermind the fact that race wasn't even a consideration in creating those characters, and also ignoring the fact that the most obvious and logical way of interpreting any allegory you might see as part of shared human experience which disregards race.
You're so obsessed with calling out racism wherever you see it that you've become unbelievably racist merely to serve that end. The worst part is that you're just one of many being puppeted by such ideology. It needs to stop, and the only way that happens is if you and people like you take a moment to consider what you're actually doing, because you are doing absolutely nothing but harm.

Ezeckel Reichert Ezeckel Reichert If you refuse to see the harm in Tolkiens work then I have no more to say to you. His intent may not have been directly racist but the effect is and that's what matters. You also seem to misunderstand what racism is and how it functions. Racism is not calling a group of people by the name a large majority prefer to be called by. You seem to think that by saying "Tolkien said some things about race that we should criticise" I am saying "I hate white people". Even worse you've backed yourself into a position of hate and bias pulling the "I hate progressiveism" card. Because from now on any argument I give no matter how strong will be ignored by you. Which is a shame. If you actually want to know more about this kind of subject there's plenty of stuff to read on it.

I play my Orcs as being controlled by semi-nomadic matriarchal clans who honour the goddess and occasionally trade with humans. Males hovever are kicked out once they come of age and either trail along behind the female clans scavenging scraps OR set out on their own as raiding parties (or mercenaries for hire by Dark Lords)
