Looks like Truck Norris roundhouse-kicked all the "stage" cams right off the stage. 😉

After seeing what one of these Truck Norris cams actually does in the wild. Where the engine had stock OEM flat top pistons with a TBSS intake and a set of out of the box Summit headers with a full exhaust to the back of the car (1980 Monte Carlo) running a 4l60E trans. I was very happy with the performance and even the fuel mileage that this performance cam provided. And is why we went with the same cam and flattop OEM pistons and 862 heads for our 5.3 LM7 build thats going in our 86 Camaro in the spring. If it makes anywhere near the 400 hp (NA) we will be very happy with what we have. Having a nice street car (with AC) With 400 hp on pump gas thats getting 20 plus MPG is about all you can ask for these days.

Love what this channel does. Also really appreciate the dyno charts that go all the way down to 2k rpm. Lotta times that's where I'm rolling into it on the street. Particularly when I don't want to sound too conspicuous. I'm pulling from 2k to 4k a lot more often than 4k to 6k. A cam like the Truck Norris seems ideal.

I agree with you that if you have already done a cam swap that it's probably not enough difference to make a difference between the cams to justify the cost and effort to change it. But if you have a stock cam and want to get the best upgrade cam I think the the truck Norris cam is definitely the one to get. Thank you great video. Just to let you know. Your videos are awesome I have learned a lot and there's things I was thinking about that were wrong and others I had a pretty good understanding of and your videos have shown me with dyno data where I was right and wrong and why.

Stall helped but was not what we wanted having to lay into it to get the power even on the smaller holes
But we’ll be starting from fresh again for another truck and we’re definitely going with the truck Norris thxs

I have a stock 5.3 Lm7 engine and 862 heads with a 68 inlet and 90 outlet turbocharger, with a fitech injection system for 750hp with a 102 throttle. Thanks for the help.

I put a 6.0 in a ‘05 Suburban with the BTR Stage1 Truck cam, it can idle and pass CA emissions on the factory 5.3 tune. I just found an idle clip of “Truck Norris”, IMO that would be miserable with the stock tight converter these trucks came with and I don’t think it’s going to be happy at a factory 550rpm idle. In short, drivability of the Stg1 probably better and you can sneak it past the Gestapo every two years. Thanks for another great vid Richard!

    • @natricjol
      @natricjol 2 роки тому +2

Part of the TN is it works great with stock converter. It's made to have a rowdy idle while actually being smooth with the stock converter. Lots of tuning time (correct ve table then adjust maf and timing over and over) gave choppy but emissions worthy idle with good driveability. Tows better than stock too.

  • @salvatorehayes2753

Personal Observations Made Comparing The Truck Norris To The Stage 1-4:
TN Had The Tightest LSA Of 107. It Also Has The second Highest Amount Of Overlap (when guessing Exhasut duration is 222)
STG1 Had The Least Amount Of Overlap And Widest LSA 112. It's "RPM HP Hump" Was The Earliest. It Made Less Overall HP And Torque Because LSA Was Was Furthest From Optimal For Engine.
STG 2 Had The Next Shortest Amount Of Overlap And A Slightly Tighter 111 LSA. This Cam Didn't Really Shift The HP Hump From The Stage 1 Further Up In RPM But Rather Widened The Hump. Power Did Increase From STG1 Suspected By The Slight Lift Increase And Tighter LSA Approaching Optimal.
STG 3 Had 3rd Shorted Amount Of Overlap And Again A Slightly Tighter 110 LSA. The Change In Overlap From 2-3 Is Increasing However The HP Hump Isn't Really Shifting Higher Up In The RPMs. The Increases Appear To LSA Approaching Optimal As It Gets Tighter.
STG 4 Had The Most Amount Of Overlap And More Overlap Than The TN Cam. Oddly The LSA Went Up To 111. This Cam didn't Really Shift The Power Much Higher Up The RPM Given More Overlap. It Did However Make More Power Than The TN. The Increased Overlap Seems To Have Traded More Low End To Compensate For Having The LSA Further From Optimal For This Engine Compared To The TN 107LSA. I Think If The STG4 Kept Same Overlap But Ran A 108-9 LSA The Power Gain Would Be More Higher And Less Behind The TN In The Lower RPMs In The Curve.
I'm Starting To See That Overlap Isn't Trading 3-4RPM Power And Shifting The Peak RPM Power Range As High Up As I Think. It Appears To Be Trading Much Lower RPM Power 1500-3000 RPM And Slightly Shifting The RPM It Peaks At While Raising The Peak.
The Duration Bias. The TN Appears To Have The Largest Duration Bias With Much More Duration On The Exhaust. This Appears To Flatten/Carry The Peak Power Further Out. From What I've Read Doing This Does Indeed To Show This True. However It Says It Trades Low End When You Bais The Exhaust For More Duration. This Isn't Really Seen With The TN Cam... However It Is Possible Since The LSA Is More Near Optimal That The STG4 Cam It May Not Show The Trade Since The STG Is Loosing Some Of It From LSA Being Further From Optimal.
    These Are Personal Notes.

So, bone stock truck, factory everything including exhaust, am I going to be better with the TN or the Torq? It's my daily truck, but I also use it for pulling a 6000+lbs toy hauler(please don't judge me 😁).
It can do it now with the 4.8 surprisingly, but I imagine a 5.3 and either of these cams is really going to make moving this thing much easier when I need to. I just want the best cam for this application, and the best for daily driving too. Fuel consumption already sucks. Lol

I'm building an 04 Lq4. Hopefully it has all the factory goodies and it'll get the truck Norris cam, Ported Head and intake, and heads decked to bring compression to around 10.3 : 1 if I've got valve piston clearance. probably balance the rotating assembly so I can spin close to 7k assuming I got the stronger rods and pistons

it won't make power up at 7000 rpm with that cam on a 6.0L-but it will rev there

@@richardholdener1727 Any suggestions for a cam that would want to be shifted WOT at around 6.5 - 7k that would still make good low-end torque for light towing and street? I'd probably be doing a Holley terminator with a map switch for transmission control for towing to rev higher before shifting. My goal is 400 + torque and HP - Id probably be building custom headers too.
      And I'd probably do a HD converter with 2000 - 2200 Stall

Richard, great stuff as always. You've really become the Google and Wikipedia of anything everything relating to street performance LS and LT engines.
I have a turbo question that I would really appreciate hearing your thoughts on-- I've watched you get big power out of the twin cheap gt3582 clones, but for a daily driver genIII 4800 (truck norris cam, BTR lifters, rods, beehive springs, "garage" port/polish 862 heads, 52lb injectors), would going with a single Garrett gt3582 be too small for a 560-650 crank hp goal? I feel like they're a lot of NA guys like myself who are interested in getting our feet wet in the turbo craze, but who aren't looking to just jump right in running 20+ psi, nor really interested in a set-up (yet) trying to "out-hp" the guy next to them, but rather, are more interested in a set-up with a low-to-mid RPM range grocery-getter with the throttle response that feels more NA than turbo if I'm making any sense. Essentially, there really isn't any information floating around anywhere for those of us that may fit into that niche. Would a single turbo that size choke me down to the point of misery? Thanks

    • @richardholdener1727

      the gt3582 won't support 650 hp-it will support 500-550 on the 4.8l

Just the video I’ve been waiting for! Thanks! I’ve got a stock 6.0 in my 2004 Suburban. It is used to tow my camper, and I’ve been considering a cam. I just put shorty headers on it because the original exhaust manifolds were shot. The question I’ve been wondering is whether or not I would need to upgrade my valve springs if I were to run the Truck Norris cam? Anyone have any input on that? Thanks!

I went ahead and replaced springs with the truck torque cam. Just ls6 springs as the btr brand equivalent was out of stock. With alot of vehicles that get cam swaps with higher miles, spring swap is almost always a good idea. Good insurance while you have it apart.

I'd be really interested in how these cams and also a turbo will affect fuel consumption. Mostly just part throttle cruise. That's the only thing that worries me about replacing the cam in my daily tahoe. Fuel is so expensive and it already is pretty thirsty even with afm.

Really wish people would stop thinking the TN cam outperforms ANY stock cam for towing (1500-2500rpm). Unless you test the rpm curve from idle, everyone and their mommas knows larger duration, more lift and a tighter valve sequence makes more power at 6500rpm. I would take a stock 5.3 VVT cam over ANY aftermarket cam for towing or low rpm torque, that’s a fact.

After Watching your videos for awhile, my 4.8 crew cabs lifter decided to start ticking at 227k miles. Being i use it as a daily and just wanted more power were it spends all its time at lower rpm I went with the torque cam. 4.8 in a heavy crew cab that I didn't want to change the converter out in the torque cam just seemed like the best fit to make it less anemic 😆. Hoping between the cam, hd2 shift kit while transmission was being built, and went ahead and regeared from 3.23-4.10 and Detroit truetrac that the truck performs better in its roll than beforehand 😎
