2 and half years and this video is still relevant. This explains how bad is Apple at resolving such minor issues which can cause so much irritation and stress to its customers.
Apple. You need to accept your mistake and let people know about this on your web pages. Also, since the product was shoddy, provide a way for the users to get a new charger (at your cost).
Thanks for this video - I have just had this issue, and it suddenly happened overnight. Nothing about the macbook or the charging lead had changed, other than a macbook update. This really helps me narrow down what to do next, thanks again.
I just got my MacBook Pro 2022 16" last week. It's updated to Montery 12.0.1 and this problem is definitely still happening 100%. Took me forever to come to this same conclusion since I don't have another power source to swap out with handy. It does charge over USB-C fine with MagSafe using an alternate source with enough output, however, oddly, a USB-C to USB-C cable will also charge the MacBook closed and off using the same problematic charger. It won't charge with the MagSafe open, closed, off, on and shows the same exact symptom as in this video.
Thanks for making this video. I had the same issue today on my M2 which had the battery completely drained and won’t start or charge. However, plugin the megasafe cable on USB-C charge port didn’t work for me. Fortunately I used USB-C cable from my old Macbook with the M2 message brick and managed to charge and bring it to life. Once it started charging switched to megasafe cable and looks happy. Saved me from visiting the 🍏 store😊
I was facing same issue today, i lost the hope after seeing your issue, as my laptop is few years old and there is no longer any warranty on this. However after so many tries and blowing air through the USB-C plug many times, finally I took a small colouring brush and cleaned the internal pins, it started working again. But after 10 minutes problem recurred again. I think most likely internal pin is displaced or loose.
Quite dissapointed with the Apple’s magsafe charger quality. I just bought a Macbook Air M2 5 days ago, and the cable suddenly unable to charge. My magsafe keep blinking red. I tried several trouble shoot tips on UA-cam but still not working. If I plug in a type C cable with my phone charger it could charge my mac just fine. The problem is on the magsafe
Thank you for uploading this, literally just unboxed my refurbished macbook pro m1 pro 2021 and ran into exactly this issue. At least i can charge it now. Called the apple support twice and the support was completely useless. They could only tell me To bring it to the next apple store…
Thanks. I got my dead mac (2021 16") powered on by plugging in magsafe wire in other type-c charger, after that plugged the wire back to 140w apple brick, working fine now. Thanks 👍
It happens, when the battery is completely drained out. In my case at least, incountered 2 times. I used my Phone charger to charge it upto 1% and then used the macs original charger. It's working fine.
Come on man, it's such an expensive laptop. Who would remove the original adaptor and directly use a power source ? It's not just about low power, the adaptor keeps lots of things in check and makes the laptop charging secure. Just think if there is Voltage fluctuation your laptop battery is gone
I had the same problem on my macbook pro. But I didn't had a additional USB-C charger. So I plugged the USB-C cable intro the USB-C port of the same MacBook. Makin a circuit. After that the charger worked again. Looks like the charging need a reset and then it works again.
i'm Having the same issue here ,it keeps blinking the cable (Magsafe) seems to work normally when plugged to another charger (Brick) the 140w charger (Brick) works well charging phones this is for sure something shady from Apple
it's weird cos I have a brand new M2 max 16 inch since 18 days and same issue, + if the lid is open and I ask for a shutdown, the Mac will always restart if magsafe is attached, I bought a different magsafe cable, I've tried other power bricks from apple and I did this too plugged in to an Anker 140 watts 737 battery and it didn't fix the issue ... so it's weird, all was working fine for me until I updated my Mac to Sonoma public beta 4 .. since then I downgraded to Ventura, tried everything I could, went into diagnostic mode etc... nothing have changed ... So this issue who seems to have been fixed via software update for most user a year ago on M1 Max , is happening again but with M2 max now ... im' will return it to Apple tomorrow , but if mine would have the same result on another PD charger , I would keep it , but no matter what I use , same issue..
All Macbook m1 pro also get charge with any USB type C and in my case power brick working fine issue with mag-safe port or cable as I am able to charge my macbook using thunderbolt USB type C with same power brick.
how long does it take before the computer will have enough power to turn on? it stopped blinking from doing this but pressing any keys turns the orange light off and the computer isn’t turning on. it’s been plugged in for about 15 mins
Same problem here, with my brandnew Macbook Pro 16" M2/ 2023, Magsafe3 connector. It will charge if you use an USB-C to USB-C and plug it into an USB-C port, but the MAgsafe refuses.... and this after 3 weeks.... I only loaded 3 times. This gives me a bad feeling after having made an investment of a few 1000's. Swapping out with another charger and Magsafe gives the same problem. Maybe I should try this solution... But what is the use of having a magsafe then...??
Had me stressing. My Mac was completely dead and it wouldn't charge. I used a iPhone adapter to charge it to about 2-3% then switched it to the normal one and it worked normally.
if my battery is red and when i plug the charger - it keeps turning on and off and keep sending notifications of on and off. white laptop is on. how to fix that

Yes! Really lacking in the QC department. But,at least this should help some people use it anyway because not everyone would be in a position to return it owing to may be a busy schedule!
May macbook pro 2020 has a same problem. I brought it to apple service center and they want me to pay for half of the price of the laptop around 750 to 800 dollars but I refused 😢 Its like buying a new a one. The battery charge cycle was just 70.
My macbook stopped charging all of a sudden by the magsafe charger. I tried charging through the USB C port using the same brick which worked. However, I later tried restarting the macbook and the magsafe started charging fine!
On my M1 this problem is intermittent and I have been at Apple store once and the couldnt find any problem. A few months later it stopped charging. I saw a clip that you can charge via the usb-c connection with a phone charger.
I got 3 pin adapter with my mac pro 14". But my whole house/home electric wire is not earthing proof. That is why i feel still MacBook electric shock leakage issues. Could you please tell me any other solutions? Thanks in Advance
i had the same issue with my m2 macbook air. the magsafe was just blinking orange i was soo scared coz i got it like just couple of months ago. turs out it was aldente not charging more than my specified limit lol
Magsafe just stopped working on my 16. Have to charge with USB c. This is on top of the issue of getting shocks while charging with all macbooks chargers without earthing pin. Total trainwreck.
Today my laptop is not charging anymore it is so annyoing since day one i never moved the cable or used other than on my desktop.... Now i have to plug and unplug the cable many times so it works again... I tried to used with a 65w charger and it's the same thing... My macbook 14 ist just 2 weeks old.

same issue, i can´t return it. :( Macbook pro M2 Max
Since this is a hardware issue and probably can't be solved by a software update, will you be returning your macbook until they fix this?
The problem is with the charging brick.
So,won’t be returning the MacBook Pro.
