Painting a large atmospheric seascape in oils

  • This painting tutorial shows the process of creating a large atmospheric oil painting.
    Here I offer an insight into my technique and share the painting tips I learned over the years, like painting the glitter with a palette knife or flicking the brush to create the splashing effect.
    Hope you will find it useful or at least entertaining.
    The original seascape painting "Vision" measures 48x48 inches and is available for sale on EvaVolfSeascapes.etsy.com
    I used only four oil colors to create this tender purple seascape:
    titanium white, ultramarine blue, burnt umber and alizarin crimson (any red will do). I chose purple as a dominant color, brown as complementary and white as an accent.
    I also used Liquin Original as a medium, but any oil or mineral spirits will do.
    This painting took me 2 sessions x 4 hours and I let it dry completely for a week in between them.
    I used a reference photo from a hazy morning in the Outer Banks, North Carolina.

    Love your videos. Love the subject matter, and the energy, seeing your work from start to finish, the length, and the instruction of your method.
    The short intermission at your local beach (20:25ish): how beautiful the light and the small ripples on the water.
    Thank you.

    Just starting out with oils... its kinda funny, cus when I think of oil paintings I think of what you are producing , which looks great... I will probably knock out a few and them venture down another path, but your video has really helped me loads, thanks for posting. I have used oils with spray paint! and graphite with pens and chalks! water colors and pens ... one day it would be nice to combine the lot! it will happen. i Just need more time with oils to understand them, thanks again.

    Thankyou so much Eva for the detailed video. This is the one of the best tutorial i find in youtube. I have subscribed you so that will get more to learn. One more thing i noticed wherever you are stroking the brush it was not so edgy as mine but was soft without even buffing.. i use acrylics never tried oil ..is the paint makes the difference. Plz do reply.

    • @EvaVolf
      @EvaVolf  4 роки тому

      You’re welcome. Yes, I think the difference is in medium you use: oils are much easier to blends than acrylics, give them a try! I love using filbert brushes Aspen Series from Princeton brush, they also help create these soft edges

    I will say when I first came across your videos (a while ago) & although I greatly admire your work the time-lapse videos frustrated me as I wanted to know exactly how you produced them. NOW it's more slower and you explain in better detail and I'm picking up some good tips. I look forward to when you will do a voice-over on your painting videos to explain in greater detail your method. Maybe try it lol. I've subscribed and have notifications turned on as I'll look forward to seeing more of these fantastic paintings :)
