Whenever I get a request from patreon I use the direct links provided to make sure there is no confusion! It is the shorter version but I still LOVED it! We can do the full version in the future!👍
Hey man! That’s not the whole song! There’s another 2 minutes to the song that you missed! The song is 6:05! Go listen that one! That’s the actually version to the song! Not this crap where they take half the song out!
The long version with the instrumental section does a lot toward setting the sailing mood... eerie sounds that could be whale song, could be interplanetary, but still very musical and well fit to the rest of the song. It's a must-listen.
The full 6 minute version from the album is the ACTUAL "Official" version, the one that was released on the radio. It has the awesome and trippy instrumental version that gives the final verse its context! Please, do a reaction to the full version. Thank you. Really enjoying the channel.
You MUST listen to the full version. If you loved what you heard you will realize you were robbed when you hear the full version. I was waiting for your reaction for the part that was cut out and couldn’t believe it wasn’t played.
I absolutely love this song! The instrumental that is missing from this version really IS the cherry on top of the sundae, though. I saw Styx in concert twice, and they did an amazing job with this one live. Of course, it doesn't hurt to have ten thousand people-plus singing along with you. Another great Styx song is "Blue Collar Man".
This was my class song in 1981! The principal had said the song could not be rock! We thought we had pulled a fast one because the student council took it in to the principal so she could hear it and approve it. She just listened to the first part. We were quite pleased with ourselves. Lol
I contributed to that #8 position by buying the 45 single of that song when I was a kid in the 70’s. I have been a Styx fan ever since. You definitely have a lot more great tunes to choose from.
It was so fun to see this reaction. I've been a HUGE Styx fan since 1978 when I first heard this song on the radio. It's been my ALL-TIME FAVORITE song since. I bought every Styx album when they came out and saw them 3 times in concert. The Grand Illusion album came out on 7-7-77 on Dennis DeYoung's 7th wedding anniversary. Forever a Styx Fan!! Thanks for the great reaction!! 😁👍
Styx is great. There is some mind-blowing talent in this band. That said: stylistically, they didn't do anything that hadn't already been done before. Check out what The Who was doing years before them.
I was 15 when this song was released. Loved this band and all their songs. The 70’s were the best! Also, for something different but showcases their harmonies and Tommy Shaws voice try “Boat on the river”
By doing this version you are missing around 98 seconds of the actual studio version. Many artists pre MTV used radio edit versions in their promo videos. An absolute must that you listen to the studio version. Thanks and God Bless.
Saw them twice, back in 1978 & 1983. You can't help singing along once the piano starts, you knew what was coming. Guilty both times, along with 2,000 & 20,000 respectfully others. Dennis DeYoung has a great voice. I've seen Freddie Mercury, Ann Wilson and Steve Perry, probably 3 of the greatest vocalists in rock. Dennis falls in behind them.
I'm a fan of instrumentals, and you have to listen to the long version! Watching them perform and listening to the vocals bring me a great joy. Glad to know you find them entertaining. Yes, Styx is one of my faves! The 60s and 70s had some great instrumental hits. I wish more reactors took the time to listen to them. You could always hear bands like Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass - who had many great hits; Deodato (Also Sprach Zarathustra); Apollo 100 (Joy); Henry Mancini (Elephant Walk, Pink Panther). These examples are more of the Jazz variety, but I'm sure you would discover something new and your audience would enjoy them too. When the song Frankenstein came out (Edgar Winter), I was in heaven! Nevertheless, bring on more Styx!!!
Great tune. I wore this cassette out in the 70's. Now that I'm older i just chuckle thinking of the South Park episode where anyone singing the beginning of this song triggers Cartman to sing the rest of the song in its entirety super fast. lol
Nice pick. But I can't listen to this without hearing Cartman singing it in my head lol. Agree with "Fooling Yourself" next on your list from this album. Enjoyed this!
Of course I loved this song, I have all of their albums, I think you missed the part where he said he went up in a Starship to the skies, maybe you'll catch it on your next listen! Great reaction!
Yet ANOTHER great choice from SalvoG !! Styx is a powerhouse.......as a matter-of-fact, they often toured with HEART (and sometimes still do). You are developing great taste sir!!! 🙂🎼🎵🎶🪕🎸
Great reaction! I love STYX. In my top 2 bands. STYX and Def Leppard are tied for first. I am here whenever you react to either band. Sometime after you get deeper into the STYX catalog, just sit and watch the Return To Paradise concert on YT. It is one of my favorite jam concerts to watch. It would be a nice one to react to, but I doubt YT would allow it except on patreon.
Before I became a Pentatonix fan, too, I spent 30 years stuck on Styx, Heart, Rush, Queen, etc, lol, so I'm completely tickled with the other bands you are exploring - thanks for all the enjoyment you give us loving on our favorite groups! Add in some Bad Company and Moody Blues and I won't even have time to watch any other UA-cam channels :-)
This is an edited cut version ,which kind of makes it a SIN to do such a thing to this song. Recommendation : to check out the live version from The Return to Paradise 1996 show... 🔥
Oh boy, does this ever bring back the memories. Used to watch a local band playing in small rock venues all over Chicago. It was Baby Styx before they made it big. In the early 80s I bought a sailboat and went cruising for 3 years. Played this song as we were leaving Harbor each time. Thanks for your reaction. Didn't realize it was the shorter version until the end and I hadn't heard that amazing synthesized sound and crescendo. Still very satisfying though.
As mentioned, this was the short MTV video version. Album: ua-cam.com/video/eYCFrcCqh7Q/v-deo.html LIVE from the 1996 Return To Paradise tour: ua-cam.com/video/VMFVkGA1Qfw/v-deo.html Two deep cuts also from the Grand Illusion album that are fan favorites are: CASTLE WALLS"(Fan video: ua-cam.com/video/DmmDHkaTIfw/v-deo.html, Lyrics:ua-cam.com/video/02cZoM5reqo/v-deo.html) "Man In The Wilderness"(Album:ua-cam.com/video/iZaRkqxOTto/v-deo.html, Re-mix Extended:ua-cam.com/video/biKrDFBp0ns/v-deo.html, Live:ua-cam.com/video/IYKwpWPOA5c/v-deo.html).
one of my favorite songs. saw them earlier this year and it's even better live, even with Lawrence Gowan instead of Dennis. agree that fooling yourself is great as is blue color man.
There's a whole center part that's missing from this version! The whole version has this really cool, futuristic interlude in the middle. You've missed out!
I can no longer hear this song without thinking of South Park. In one episode, either Kyle or Stan (can't remember which) proclaims that "you just can't hear the first lyric" of this song ("I'm sailing away...") without it being finished. He then proceeds to sing the line and Cartman about loses it, trying to resist singing the song... and then he launches into a frantic singing of the rest of the song. It's HILARIOUS!!!!
your missing out on some really great synthesizers and keyboard melodies in the studio full version, that blows this away. Hope you get a chance to react to that one.
You missed the guitar solo AND the organ solo with this shortened "live" performance. You should have listened to the studio version, which was what was played on the radio.
Yes you definitely have to listen to the album version but I have to say that this video was probably made for purposes of the original MTV era and it was that standard radio length
As someone else mentioned, this version is very odd. They left out the whole organ part. I have actually never heard this without the organ part before.
Whenever I get a request from patreon I use the direct links provided to make sure there is no confusion! It is the shorter version but I still LOVED it! We can do the full version in the future!👍
Sooo🤔..this is my millionth & one time listening? YES. Without a doubt. Still loving it!!
Hey man! That’s not the whole song! There’s another 2 minutes to the song that you missed! The song is 6:05! Go listen that one! That’s the actually version to the song! Not this crap where they take half the song out!

Totally agree
Ditto.
I prefer the long version. The short version just seems truncated and lacking the oomph of the long version.
This is the radio airplay version. Now, if you truly want to be blown away, you must listen to the album version!
And if you want to go all the way.... ua-cam.com/video/3kerxiFVJvQ/v-deo.html Apologetx's Come Whale Away
This wasn't the radio version. I know - I heard it when it came out. This was the cropped version.
Actual full version here: ua-cam.com/video/sm-Vh3j8sys/v-deo.html
The full 6 minute version from the album is the ACTUAL "Official" version, the one that was released on the radio. It has the awesome and trippy instrumental version that gives the final verse its context! Please, do a reaction to the full version. Thank you. Really enjoying the channel.
It’s a beautiful song.
Styx is one of my all time favorite bands and they are so amazing in concert.
You MUST listen to the full version. If you loved what you heard you will realize you were robbed when you hear the full version. I was waiting for your reaction for the part that was cut out and couldn’t believe it wasn’t played.
Yep. A classic. I saw them in their prime in 1981 and 1983 in Cuyahoga Falls, OH. Awesome.
Styx is one of those bands that pretty much all of their songs you can sing along to!! Love them and all of their music!!!😊😊
Music from my youth!!!!
This is the short version of the song. The longer version is much better!
I agree 100%!
Yes sir
Love me some Styx...........
Oh you need to hear the long version! You'll love it even more!
Dennis DeYoung is SOOOO underrated. Everyone's talking about Tommy Shaw but Dennis is a ROCK star. Anything he sings is gold.
Another great track off of this album is "Fooling Yourself". You should definitely check it out.
YES!! Great song.
As others have said, you need to hear the long version
Styx deserve to be in the Hall of fame
This was my class song in 1981! The principal had said the song could not be rock! We thought we had pulled a fast one because the student council took it in to the principal so she could hear it and approve it. She just listened to the first part. We were quite pleased with ourselves. Lol
You definitely need to listen to the full length album version…this is like a sample.
I contributed to that #8 position by buying the 45 single of that song when I was a kid in the 70’s. I have been a Styx fan ever since. You definitely have a lot more great tunes to choose from.
Awesome in concert!!🔥🔥
Just saw them in concert. If they come your way, GO. they still sound incredible.
There's no Dennis DeYoung in the band now so they're not that good
STYX are such an interesting band - great storytellers, and great musicians!
PS - ooh! Excited to hear Deep Purple is coming up, too!!
It was so fun to see this reaction. I've been a HUGE Styx fan since 1978 when I first heard this song on the radio. It's been my ALL-TIME FAVORITE song since. Great information..thx..65 y.o.Styx Fan...
Lol. Me too singing!
Very good song and reaction. Styx was very popular in the day
Please do listen to the whole version. It's definitely a journey.
Styx is great. There is some mind-blowing talent in this band. That said: stylistically, they didn't do anything that hadn't already been done before. Check out what The Who was doing years before them.
Oh wow, it takes me back. It's so awesome.
The Grand Illusion was released July 7, 1977 and it was their 7th album
So many memories. I was so young ! Thank You for the step back in time!
I was 15 when this song was released. Loved this band and all their songs. The 70’s were the best! Also, for something different but showcases their harmonies and Tommy Shaws voice try “Boat on the river”

This was new in my high school yrs , still hear it on radio a good bit , but I do listen to the oldies station
I'm a fan of instrumentals, and you have to listen to the long version! Watching them perform and listening to the vocals bring me a great joy. Glad to know you find them entertaining. You would LOVE the studio version with the synth bridge that was cut out of this.
Equinox and The Grand Illusion are great albums
my fave 2 by Styx. Felt something was missing on the rest of the albums from that era.
Great tune. I wore this cassette out in the 70's. Now that I'm older i just chuckle thinking of the South Park episode where anyone singing the beginning of this song triggers Cartman to sing the rest of the song in its entirety super fast. lol
You should listen to the instrumental version. It has a funky synthesizer solo that you have to hear!
Nice pick. But I can't listen to this without hearing Cartman singing it in my head lol. Agree with "Fooling Yourself" next on your list from this album. Enjoyed this!
Wonderful songs hope you have the full version here. Just starting to listen now love you
Of course I loved this song, I have all of their albums, I think you missed the part where he said he went up in a Starship to the skies, maybe you'll catch it on your next listen! Great reaction!
Masterpiece
It's impossible to not appreciate this song.
They found their fortune🤑🤑
This is their encore song
Oh no just realized it was the short version cannot even listen still love you
Love this! I taught myself this song on the piano when I was a kid...badly because I don't play piano, lol
Yet ANOTHER great choice from SalvoG !! Styx is a powerhouse.......as a matter-of-fact, they often toured with HEART (and sometimes still do). You are developing great taste sir!!! 🙂🎼🎵🎶🪕🎸

If you like those type of voices you will also love John Anderson of Yes and Rodger Hodgson from Supertramp voices too.
Agree 100%.
Before I became a Pentatonix fan, too, I spent 30 years stuck on Styx, Heart, Rush, Queen, etc, lol, so I'm completely tickled with the other bands you are exploring - thanks for all the enjoyment you give us loving on our favorite groups! Gonna see them this Friday, can't wait
You have to do the full version Salvo. Mind melting.
This is an edited cut version ,which kind of makes it a SIN to do such a thing to this song. Recommendation : to check out the live version from The Return to Paradise 1996 show... 🔥

Album: ua-cam.com/video/eYCFrcCqh7Q/v-deo.html
LIVE from the 1996 Return To Paradise tour: ua-cam.com/video/VMFVkGA1Qfw/v-deo.html
Two deep cuts also from the Grand Illusion album that are fan favorites are:
CASTLE WALLS"(Fan video: ua-cam.com/video/DmmDHkaTIfw/v-deo.html, Lyrics:ua-cam.com/video/02cZoM5reqo/v-deo.html)
"Man In The Wilderness"(Album:ua-cam.com/video/iZaRkqxOTto/v-deo.html, Re-mix Extended:ua-cam.com/video/biKrDFBp0ns/v-deo.html, Live:ua-cam.com/video/IYKwpWPOA5c/v-deo.html).
The longer version with they cosmic synthesizer interlude is a much harder rocker. You will love it more
Down the rabbit hole you go Salvo, so much in their history to listen to. I prefer the older stuff pre80’s.
This video chops out the amazing keyboards in the middle
Awesome...
one of my favorite songs. saw them earlier this year and it's even better live, even with Lawrence Gowan instead of Dennis. agree that fooling yourself is great as is blue color man.
There's a whole center part that's missing from this version! The whole version has this really cool, futuristic interlude in the middle. You've missed out!
So short! Much was missing there! Still..... A great song!!
They have an extended version that is really good with more organ
You need the album version ..
Dennis DeYoung is a true genius. Imagine being kicked out of the band you started.
Bro I really like your style of reactions.
I like that he does the research instead of just listening.
For future note, a lot of "official videos from the 70s" are usually the radio edit versions.
The distorted "lead" on Grand Illusion and Miss America ... nuff said
Please redo with the full version. The second half is even better
If you like this, you must listen I'm ok, Sing for the day, and Borrowed time... you will love them ;)
Almost all STYX songs rock
Need to check out the longer version from the lp
Check out Midnight Ride, from the
Album Equinox
It's strange not hearing Cartman once you've heard the South Park version. It too is amazing. Make it funky now
Please hear the complete song. Just adding my voice to the pleas.
Listen to the REAL album version. It will knock your sox off
your missing out on some really great synthesizers and keyboard melodies in the studio full version, that blows this away. Hope you get a chance to react to that one.
Seriously, the album this track is from is worth listening too, and the full version is better.
whoa.. I entered the USN that same year(1976).. umm.. could this .. umm ...nvm 🕶
You missed the guitar solo AND the organ solo with this shortened "live" performance. You should have listened to the studio version, which was what was played on the radio.
Yes you definitely have to listen to the album version but I have to say that this video was probably made for purposes of the original MTV era and it was that standard radio length
No autotune!!
Having heard this played to death on the radio….i not only can avoid singing along…I change the station to avoid hearing it. 😜
Same!
when I didnt hear the synths it felt like a big hole in the song. Would have blown you away. PLEASE FIND THAT VERSION
This version cut out an entite really cool synth section you would have loved!!!
The longer version is better
Also South Park does a hilarious version of this
A whole section of the song was cut out. Too bad.
You should listen/watch Chuck Berry's "MY Ding A Ling" awesome 👌
As someone else mentioned, this version is very odd. They left out the whole organ part. I have actually never heard this without the organ part before.
Now, it's time for you to listen to Steve Miller's "Wild Mountain Honey"...............oh, yeah............
This is the Single version, not the Album version. Album version has more synths.
You have been cheated, the part you missed, will blow you away.
This shortened version misses the mark imho
This short version is a crime against rock music. You haven't really experienced this song if you don't listen to the original version.
Lol! Now you have to check out the South Park version
Whether you post it as a video or not, you really want to listen to the album version.
Without Dennis DeYoung, the band Styx-ish.
Agreed.
