Dennis is an awesome singer and songwriter. He was definitely Styx.

Tommy Shaw on the high harmony. He is a top notch vocalist in his own right.

I saw them live a few years back and they sound as good live now as they did on studio record and they are so much fun with so much energy and comical relief!

  • @classicarcadeamusementpark4242

The synth string you referred to was done on an ARP String Ensemble (also known as the Solina before ARP put their name on it) keyboard using a phase shifter. In the mix that follows it is also a bit of Hammond organ. But the best part instrumentally, was the middle section cut from the video. This song was released about a month after Star Wars came out, and the synthesizer driven instrumental section sounded it was from out of space. Dennis was not only an incredible singer, but also an incredible lead synth player.
Yes, Tommy sang the high part of the 2 part harmony of the chorus both live & in the studio, which is unusual because Styx normally does 3 or even 4 part harmonies. 2 part seemed to work well in this song. Like most of their songs, this song was a team effort with both Dennis & Tommy writing parts and combining them. But generally they credited who ever wrote the largest portion. They worked incredibly well when they were both on the same team.
Sadly, the band has never been the same since ousting Dennis DeYoung, their primarily lead singer, main song writer, hit writer, and also incredible synth/keyboard player. He was also a founding member of the band and the main reason for their success having formed the band with his neighbors way back in 1962. Also, the band was not a rock band back in 1962 until a Nun at the church they rehearsed in suggested they become a rock band. And the Beatles on the Ed Sullivan Show soon after was also an inspiration (not really an influence on their progressive rock sound) on them and many other bands of their day. Would the Beatles continue if they had ousted Paul? I think you could make that kind of comparison.
As you mentioned, they played with a lot of energy. This was well captured on 1984 video "Caught in the Act".

Saw Styx numerous times and loved every single one of them!! It's a shame that so much of the song was cut out/off though on this video. 🎶

thank you. i learned how to play drumset to styx albums in the late 70's early 80's on pillows!!! Went on to become an accomplished symphonic percussionist.

I loved listening to this on headphones with the synth moving from right to left - made me feel I was in a different world! 🙂❤ Highly recommend listening to a Tommy Shaw-led song, like Blue Collar Man, Snowblind, or their remake of Can't Find My Way Home.

Styx is one of those bands that I enjoyed even though I was only around 10 years old. I still remember hearing them on my little red ball radio.

One of my favorite bands. That guitarist singing the harmony vocals is Tommy Shaw, and he did sing that live as he was playing and still can at 69 years old. He is still going strong. JY also still an original band member getting it done. I recently heard that Dennis DeYoung has unnoficially retired. I did get to meet him a few years back, wearing purple, like a royal should. I also did get to see them live on the Roboto tour, which may not have been their best days, but the performance I saw didnt reveal any of the infighting that history has told us. Im actually a bass player myselfr, and have been thinking of a Styx tribute band. I havent seen any around my area.

You mentioned the trill he played. The vocal stars and bands of the 60s 70s 80s and even 90s were mostly classically trained musicians. We all had lessons from grade school through high school and through college. We then got private teachers, etc. Sorry to say that a number of musicians today do not have the proper basics and therefore many of them lack creativity.🤷🏻‍♀️

You should listen to Renegade, crystal ball, fool yourself, blue collar man, too much time in your hands etc with Tommy Shaw. He's the other lead singer in styx. One of the best bands ever.

There is a great live version available and there's very little difference, Styx are unique in that they have 3 singers, Dennis, Tommy Shaw (the shorter guitarist), and James Young (the other guitarist)

This is the single version. The song is missing the guitar solo and the synthesizer interlude halfway through. The album version is six minutes and nine seconds long.

Tommy Shaw is still rocking at 70 years old. A few years ago he was on an episode of Daryl's House and performed a few songs. It's a great video to get a better feel for how well he can still hit the high notes live. Daryl's House is a show where Daryl Hall (of Hall and Oates fame) invites musical artist over to his home studio for some fun playing. Here is a link: ua-cam.com/video/YTnu27jHz-g/v-deo.html

STYX was a group with 3 leads singers in each album of the period 1976-1983, each of them wrote his songs , you've listen one with Dennis Deyoung , he played piano and keyboards too, like in this real live 1978 ua-cam.com/video/FiDfTo9qS8c/v-deo.html ...the second singer Tommy Shaw, also guitarist, here in the same live (great guitars) ua-cam.com/video/-Ker1_iXz98/v-deo.html and the third singer (the hard rocker of the group), James Young, also guitarist, in this video ua-cam.com/video/PMV0Yeq-3b8/v-deo.html

A request please, Tennessee Whisky by Cakra Khan. He is part of an Indonesian group that puts out music every Wednesday, hence the band name, “See you on Wednesday”.
    Thank you. 🇨🇦

I've seen them three times. Twice with the original lineup. (Including John)😇
They were better with Dennis DeYoung though
They're still playing and are still killer good😎
