- Learners is a British comedy drama television film starring David Tennant and Jessica Hynes. The film was announced by the BBC on 3 April 2007 and was broadcast on 11 November 2007.
Learners started filming in April 2007 on location in Hertfordshire. Beverly's house was filmed at Breach Barnes in Waltham Abbey behind First Avenue. Some of the mobile home's fences had to be removed in order for actors to walk through.
Writer Jessica Hynes, who also stars as Beverly, had previously appeared together with David Tennant in the Doctor Who episodes "Human Nature" and "The Family of Blood". Shaun Dingwall was a recurring guest star in series 1 and 2 of Doctor Who.
The film tells the story of a group of learner drivers. One of them, Beverly (Jessica Hynes), is a housewife who works as a cleaner at the police station and has failed her driving exams eight times, mainly due to the driving lessons of her impatient husband Ian (Shaun Dingwall). She decides to take driving lessons from Chris (David Tennant), a devout Christian driving instructor at Gear Change, with whom she falls in love. Chris however is in love with Fiona (Sarah Hadland), his boss, who is having an affair with Beverly's colleague, policeman Gerry.
Beverly is trying to raise cash for her driving lessons, as Ian has spent all their money on a pair of owls, hoping to sell their offspring for a profit. She ends up looting her daughter's savings for university. During her ninth, secret, driving test, she runs into Ian on the street and as a result fails again. To make matters worse, Chris is leaving Gear Change because of Fiona's affair with Gerry, leaving all learner drivers without their favourite teacher. However, Chris returns when Fiona breaks up with Gerry (despite finding herself pregnant by him).
When one of the owls gets sick, threatening the life of the eggs, Beverly is forced to drive to the vet's herself. She runs into Gerry on the motorway who escorts her to the vet. The owl and eggs are saved, reuniting the family and giving Beverly enough confidence to try her test again, which this time she finally passes.
People saying the BBC only has 12 actors, meanwhile I'd happily watch David Tennant play all the roles.
There are more than 12 working in America. There are plenty of excellent British actors.

Well it's fun to see Joan Redfern married to Pete Tyler but managing to find John Smith/The Doctor anyway
When he says he's in love, it's so nervously and vulnerably it makes my heart tingle. You can see the childish sort of obsession in his movements and facial espressions, showing us how great of an actor he is. David Tennant was great in this.
Poor John Smith got tongue tied around Joan Redfern. David!s character Darwin Brown had a crush on Marilyn on the short lived series Duck Patrol. He got nose bleeds when he was around her.

I am learning how to drive at the moment, and I'm kind of jealous that
-those roads are so wide
-there are so little cars
-David Tennant is the driving instructor
I'm slightly worried that
-there seems to be no theory at all
-on your first lesson, you're expected to just drive the car and know how everything works?
-you're driving teacher doesn't tell you when to shift gears, when to blink and stuff like that (at least in the first few lessons)
I'm in awe that
-you can choose how many lessons you want to take
-it's allowed for people other than professional driving instructors to teach you

I know this comment is old, but:
- We do have theory.
- We’re not expected to know how to drive on our first lesson, but Beverley had already been driving with Ian, which is why she already knew stuff.
- We can learn with other people besides an instructor, as long as they’re over 21 and have held a licence for over three years. My mum took me out between lessons.
- The instructor does tell you when to do stuff while you’re learning.
- Beverley only estimated she’d need 10 professional lessons because she’d already been driving with Ian. If you’re having instructor only lessons, we usually pay for around 40 hours, sometimes more, sometimes less, depending on when your instructor thinks you’re ready to take your test.
- Some of our roads are wide, but some are more narrow depending on if it’s more rural.
- We have a lot more/less cars depending on where you are (town/city/countryside), but this is also just a movie 😜

i started watching this i was like y'all are exaggerating about the 12 actor thing like yeah i recognize all these actors but it's not *that* bad but Mathew Baynton being in this really sold it, the BBC only has 12 actors.

This film is too funny. I can't imagine how it must be like to fail your drivers test again and again. I thought it was easy. My test took only about 20 minutes and I really thought I failed because normally it takes 45 minutes (in Germany). I don't know how long it is in GB. I drive now for five years. Best thing I have done. A drivers license makes you independent. But we have to go to a school for it. Here it is absolutely forbidden to practise with your family. That makes it expensive. We pay here about 1500 € for this license.

(I was teached to drive in Denmark by a professional. It's law here that you have at least 26 hours (á 45 minutes) of driving lessons, each with a individual theme. (Like Left Turn, Highway, Parking, etc). My teacher meant that i was ready to the test after about 20 lessons)
There's both pros and cons with letting a professional teach you.
YES, It's really expensive and even if you already are a good competent driver, and could pass the drivers test before the 1. lesson, you have to have a minimum lessons to be sure you actually know how to drive. A drivers test are more like a spot check, into your driving. In my drivers test, i drove 6 km city, with almost no traffic and about 10 km highway. That doesn't prove that i know how to drive f.ex. in close traffic.
But at the time of my drivers test, i had driven a car at a total of 26 "hours" (45 minutes), in 1 single car. I didn't feel ready to drive my parents bigass stationcar with a caravan behind 2000 km through europe. The only thing i had driven was a 1.4 VW Polo.
I think a combination of parents teaching you and a proffesional teaching you would be great. Like, 2-4 hours prof. teaching and then you get a sticker and you can drive your parents car in some particular situations, with them beside, as passenger. (Like, highway, city, parking, etc)
I paid 10500 dkk for the whole thing. Thats 1904 USD. And that was cheap.
One of my friends failed 7 times. He paid well over 26000 dk(4700 USD), and still can't drive. He got lucky at the test.
