11 year old video and this video is the only reason my garage door is working right now. Thank you for the comprehensive instructions! Oh and I still have all my fingers and eyeballs!
My spring broke this week, and have watch half a dozen videos to learn how to repair it. This has been the best video so far. I do not understand the large number of thumbs downs. From what I can tell you covered everything.
Thank you for your kind comments, Dennis. Based on the geographic location of the clicks, we believe that a large percentage of the thumbs down were caused by a greedy, jealous competitor who has hired foreign click farms to put down competitor's videos and to promote his own videos and web site.
@@dhodges76 Thank you Doug, manny rob, and VOLTIS5 for the kind words. We're glad you all found this to be a helpful video to getting your springs replaced!
Thank you for this excellent video. I just completed this project. One recommendation for you guys trying this is do not take your hand off the inserted winding rods when either tightening or reducing the tension on the spring.
Dan, this has to be the by far the best video on UA-cam I have ever seen. I consider myself a decent all around homeowner handyman and I have tackled just about everything from electrical to plumbing to masonry and woodworking in my home. I did have had my springs replaced a few years ago and observed the guy replace it and decided I would not attempt it myself as it looked too dangerous. Your instructions are so clear and the warnings so in place that I feel confident about replacing it myself. Congratulations on a great instructional video and thank you for sharing your knowledge.
+Vince Ciaccio Thank you for taking the time to post such kind and generous comments. Hundreds of hours have gone into writing and producing the video to show how easy it can be to replace garage door torsion springs. But, it's also dangerous. And we discourage people from trying this if they don't feel confident they can do the job safely. You're welcome. Best wishes!
This is one of the most comprehensive how to videos I have watched in the past few years. Your attention to detail and safety are spot on. Thanks for posting this video. Gary
I am pretty handy and I have owned my own homes for the past 25 years. I can probably count the amount of people that I have hired on one hand. I have done many remodels and basic maintenance involving Electrical, Carpentry, and Plumbing but I had never had to install torsion springs. This was one of those thing that I thought I may have to hand over to a pro. I want to thank you for your video because it was very detailed and I was excited to start. I knew after this video that I understood the basics which will probably help me to maintain my garage door better from now on too. I ran into one problem caused by the original install. The shaft was not slipping through the bearing making it impossible to remove the cable drums. It seemed that the original installer turned the set screw a little too much which took the shaft out of round. To avoid damaging the bearing, and now knowing the basics, I removed the bearing retainers (one at a time), and took them off of each end, which allowed me to clean and lube them effectively. With your detail, the step by step instructions, me being really careful, as well as the added labor due to the damaged shaft, I still installed the springs successfully in a little under an hour.
Bryan, it sounds like you're quite handy. Doing the work in less than an hour, even with the problem you had, is impressive. You're welcome, and thank you for your helpful comments. When we were producing the video I was aware of dozens of exceptions to the normal procedure. We could have easily produced 10 videos to cover the variations. Hopefully others will be able to learn from the steps you followed to work around damage from an improper installation. I've seen many of these over the years.
Thank you Dan, for sharing your 30+ years experience in video and written instruction. You covered every base and gave me the confidence that I was replacing the spring safely and correctly. The end result is that my garage door is back in working order, better than before.
Congratulations, Ed! Glad to hear we could provide the confidence to do the job well. You're welcome, and thank you for your kind comments. Best wishes.
Yesterday, I installed two new springs on 2-car BIG 8'x16' garage door. This was the best most useful, no smarty-pant video. Thank you neighbor, whereever you are. Thank you.
This is one of the very best instructional videos I’ve ever had the pleasure to learn from. Just completed fixing our garage, for about $95 in parts and new tools instead of repair shops quotes of $360 and higher. (Every project is an excuse for new tools!!) Thank you so much and best wishes!
That is true, TzachyB! New projects often require them, and it's often fun to figure out how to work on something different yourself. We're glad you were able to save some money, and fix your garage door safely. Blessings!
I was ready to buy what I thought I needed but one of the reviews (while positive) advised to make certain by searching using specific words and come upon an informative website (DDM Garage Doors). After watching how to determine which springs I needed, I felt you deserved my money, not the other vendor. I took my laptop to the garage and followed the step by step instructions on this video, pausing and reviewing as necessary. Thank you so much for being so thorough and for sharing your knowledge freely. For those that are still shopping for parts: If you find this video useful, please be fair and buy from them.
Thank you for your business, Diego! We're glad you trusted us to go through this replacement with you. We seek to make this easy to follow, and made in such a way that homeowners, with proper safety precautions, are able to complete this repair themselves. We're glad you found this to be true!
Great video!!!!! Local shop wanted to charge me $700 to replace the springs and another $500 for a new motor!!! Watched your video, bought my own springs for $70, followed your steps exactly, and my garage door is now fully functional!! I can’t thank you enough for saving me over $1,100!!!!!
Hi Fernando! Wow, that is a lot. The price on just the springs is way too much if they are normal garage door springs. The price for the opener is within a normal range, depending on the opener used on the door. We're glad this video was able to help this replacement go well! This is a perfect of example of doing you research; some shops will try to charge more than they should. We have a list of reputable shops on our website for people who are looking for a reputable company in their area: ddmgaragedoors.com/garage-door-repairs/
There are several UA-cam videos where the installer doesn't stretch the springs after winding. Experienced professionals, however, understand that without stretching the springs the doors often will not seal the floor completely after closing. The problem with winding the springs outside the winding cone is that there is no way to safely stretch the springs. You have to position your head right in the path of a winding cone when it is most stressed. That's dangerous! The only way to safely wind the spring and to stretch it afterward is the way we show on this video.
Your video not only saved me a few hundred bucks (under $67 total), but also allowed me to feel the pride of DIY accomplishment. I upgraded the gauge of the springs and the motor now sounds 3x more quiet due to the reduced load. Thanks again for the wonderful & detailed tutorial!
TheTubeTublad to hear we could help you save money and that you could feel the sense of accomplishment. We learn so much from doing new things.Glad the motor is quieter. Your kind words are appreciated. Best wishes.
I would like to personally thank you for this video. It was perfect, very detailed and helpful. It was the only video I could find that included every step needed. From the amount of turns the springs needed, to tightening the springs to the bar and everything in between. I move from Michigan where the garage doors are light to, Coastal S.C. where the doors are hurricane rated and pretty heavy and it worked perfect. Great instructional video.
Nathan, Thank you for your generous comments, and you're welcome. Glad to hear you had all the details needed to finish with perfect results. Those hurricane rated doors can be difficult to spring. Because of the extra reinforcements the doors sometimes weigh over a 100 pounds more than the standard doors. Best wishes.
Just swapped out 2 springs and saved about $225! Easy DIY project for the mechanically inclined individual. Follow the directions exactly as spelled out in this video-extremely comprehensive. Thanks for taking the time to create a video for the weekend warrior DIY-er!
Cody, I'm glad to hear we saved you so much money! You'welcome. Replacing springs is dangerous. Just as there are many details for driving a car, the only way to responsibly sell torsion springs is to details the steps so it can be done safely. Best wishes.
Thanks so much, you gave me confidence to try it. Now I'm sitting back watching my garage door open and close as it should with 2 new springs :) great video.
I bought my garage door springs from Dan a few years back. We even exchanged a couple of emails on some of my questions. I was very pleased with their delivery and customer service. I recommend this company.
This is the second time in 18 years that I have had to replace the spring. This time I was teaching my 18 year old son and wanted him to watch a video on how and your video is excellent! Thank you so much.
Thank you for your kind words, Obsidian. It's always good to see a father and son work together. That will be much easier for your son when he needs to replace his own springs down the road. You're welcome! Best wishes.
Thank you for producing this video, what an excellent tutorial. Your attention to detail and presentation is second to none, very very helpful. Very kind of you to share your experience with us!
You're welcome, Chris. Thank you for your generous comments. The details grew out of replacing 20,000 to 30,000 springs in my 30+ years in the trade. It's much easier to replace springs than to write all the steps for replacing them; it's tedious work.
Dan: This is one of the most well-done, step-by-step videos I've seen. You didn't go into ridiculous detail when it wasn't necessary, and you slowed down enough to get important points across when it was. The video very clearly showed every detail needed for the viewer to get complete understanding of your narrative. Your spoke clearly and intelligently, at a pace appropriate for the material. No wasted moments here, not annoying music or flashy effects, just the information a view needs to do the job at hand. Thanks for such a great video! And for those of you reading, this: No, I don't know Dan or his company; I just really appreciate a quality tutorials and give kudos when they're due.
+czissman1 Thank you for taking the time to post your generous words. My videographer, Mike Herbert, was great at capturing and highlighting important points, as well as regulating the speed of the production. The biggest challenge in scripting the video was in distilling text from the larger written 2005 tutorial and shortening it to fit the video time frame. It was also a challenge to match text, voice and video. This part must have taken 20-30 hours.
The absolute best video for replacing torsion springs I’ve found out there . I’m mechanical but hadn’t ever replaced torsion springs before ,everyone always tries to scare you away from it saying l, leave it to the pros .... I’ll tell ya , After simply watching this twice I was able to size up and order my pair of springs as well as a center bearing plate and replace them . The door now works perfectly again ,actually far better than before and the whole job only took about 45 minutes . Thanks for this video , you guys saved me hundreds of dollars .
Hi Jack! We're glad that you were able to accomplish this task safely! That's the key to it all; safety. Those that say leave it to the pros are not incorrect to say so, as this is something that can be dangerous if proper safety techniques and common sense aren't used. As always: safety first, then work!
Great Video Guys!!.. Sad that your compitition would use bots to give you a Thumbs Down rating, becuase this HANDS DOWN the best video on Torsion springs. I like the attention to detail..
Thank you for your kind, encouraging and generous words. Smart thieves know how to steal without getting caught, but this one will one day answer to the all-knowing God, Who judges the unrighteous, Who guards the paths of justice and Who watches over the way of His saints. (Proverbs 2:8)
My spring broke last week. This was the best video I found. I watched it a few times, while waiting for the parts to arrive. When changing the springs I found it easier to watch the step, do it exactly as he said, then repeat with the next step. It's easy to skip an important detail if you just try to all w/o refering back to the video. It saved me a couple hundred bucks! THANKS!!!
Hi Nick! We're glad we were able to help out. Many people have said the same; that they find it best to watch one step, do it, and then continue on with the process. If you miss a step, it may be a crucial part to finishing the replacement correctly! You made the right call in double checking.
I really appreciate the warnings by the narrator about the safe practices! Really helpful video! I learned so much. I had two and and one snapped. So I just had them both replaced by a contractor. He didn't stretch the coil 1/8" like you guys did. My left side is not closing flush to the floor. I am planning to stretch the coil 1/8" like you illustrated in the video. - Henry, Aurora, CO
Hi a non! We're glad to hear that this video was helpful to you! We hope that you are able to get your door to lower to the floor. Sometimes this stretch is what makes the difference in whether the springs lift the weight they are supposed to. You may also want to check out our video on how to level a garage door, as this may be the actual problem; ua-cam.com/video/99-mbUX8mJw/v-deo.html
@@DDMGarageDoors Thanks DDM for explaining exactly why this step exists (stretching spring after winding, see 13:20), and ANON for the question. That was my biggest question so far, as I've seen most others with videos omit this step, or even comment on why it is unnecessary or dangerous. What's the worst that could happen if a person does not do this step?
@@vanontom Hi Thomas! That's a good question to wonder. For one, if you do not stretch the springs out, the door may have a difficult time closing all the way, and you may have a gap on the bottom. This is because the shaft moves slightly as the door operates, but enough that if you don't stretch the springs, the coils will likely bind on each other, and cause the door to not be able to close all the way.
Fantastic. Your 18 minute video saved me hours of trial and error trying to balance the door. The entire project took me 45 minutes from pulling out the cars to pulling them back in.
The best DIY video on torsion spring install I could find. I obsessively searched and watch a couple dozen, most were OK, none were as complete as this one, and this fellow is an EXCELLENT instructor. (I used to be in the business-to-buisiness training production). I would add two things he did not emphasize in this video: one video I found mentioned replacing the bearings at the ends, this seemed like a good idea, as long as you have it off; and in my case the installer cranked the set screws down so far the shaft was deeply indented, I wish I had know that, I would have been able to replace that. I reused the shaft, the bearings seemed ok, now have 2 new springs, maybe good for another 20 years. Thanks, with your help it went smoothly.
Hi Jeffrey! The bearings don't necessarily need to be replaced when you replace the springs. If they are worn to the point of being able to see between the race and the bearing housing, or if they are seized up to the point of not being able to turn at all anymore, then they would need to be replaced. The shaft can usually just be filed down, and will not need to be replaced either. It's always up to the customer if they want brand new parts on their door with their brand new springs: this does make some sense, and it's absolutely up to preference as long as the old parts still function and do their jobs properly.
I just wanted to say thanks to Dan at DDM. I watched the video a couple of times before buying new springs from DDM and I still managed to get the springs on the wrong side. Luckily I took photos of the installation and Dan was able to identify my problem to get me back on track. I was under the impression the spring would just unscrew if backwards, but that isn’t the case. Thanks again to DDM for the great video.
Stuckneutral The way the springs stay on the cones when they are wound is counter intuitive. When you wind the spring it looks like the winding cone will spin out of the spring. What actually happens, however, is that as you wind the spring, the inside diameter of the spring decreases causing the wire to grip the cone more tightly. When I was a kid we played with Chinese handcuffs. Trying to pull your fingers out of the cuffs caused the cuffs to tighten even more tightly on you fingers. The cones in torsion springs work the same way.
The Absolute BEST Video for this project !!!!!I haven't replaced springs for 25 Years on a previous home, and just wanted to refresh my memory, and learned something NEW, the "Stretching" last step, Awesome !!!!!Thank You !!!!!
My garage door torsion springs needed to be replaced. They no longer provided adequate force to allow the garage door to open and close. (The door had a lot of weight when lifting it up) Rather than tightening the existing (old) torsion springs I purchase new ones as well as the torsion spring bars. I asked about 12 people from work if they have every replaced their torsion springs. All of them sad “No, this is very dangerous and you should have a professional do it”. I was very apprehensive about doing this myself due to the dangers involved. This afternoon my wife and I replaced our garage door torsion springs. We followed your video and had no problems at all. Thank You so much!
We're glad this video helped, Jeffrey! Your coworkers aren't wrong though: this is a dangerous task if safety precautions are not taken. Also, if you ever add weight to your door through reinforcements, insulation, or something else, you cannot just tighten up the old springs. The weight of your door has changed, so you will need new springs that will properly lift that weight.
I've done a few garage door repairs in my time. Mostly fixing cables that have fallen off the winding drum. I've also tightened or loosened a few springs to tune garage door operation. After watching this video, I have a much more comprehensive understanding of how the whole system works. Very well done. Thank you for sharing.
We're glad you found our video to be informative, mrnetwurm! We hope that you were able to understand the system enough to get these parts replaced properly! Blessings!
Before I watched this video, I would NEVER have thought about replacing these springs. Dan, you've given me the courage to do this now for one of my customers. Thank you very much for a thorough explanation and professional presentation.
This video was exactly what I needed to replace my garage door spring. So detailed that even I couldn’t mess it up. AND, I discovered that the bar that the spring is on had been installed improperly, i.e., the center was 4” out from the wall and the ends were 5” out from the wall (instead of being equal distances, as you instruct. So, I corrected that issue, and everything ran perfectly. I watched the video a couple of times, while I was waiting for the spring to be delivered, so I was familiar with what I needed to do. It still took about 2 1/2 hrs. to install it due to other problems I discovered with my old unit, but no complaints. Thanks, so much, for making this video!
When my spring broke I searched youtube for videos so I would know how hard the job was before trying it myself. I worked as a carpenter for 22 years, but I've never done a garage door. Your videos made the process very simple. I decided that with all the information you share to make the job easier that you deserved my business so I decided to buy from you. I had just one spring, and your site made the process of switching to two springs very easy to figure out. I just got finished with the job and I'm very happy to be able to use my garage door again. Thank You!
I watched this video and was able to replace my spring without killing myself or tearing anything up, and it only took about an hour start to finish. Glad I found this video. It's the best one of the several I watched while waiting for my spring and winding rods to arrive. Thanks guys.
Fixed my springs myself. Great explanation of each and every step. I got quotes between $200-$330. Did it myself for 87 with all the tools (I had to buy the locking pliers). God bless you for the video.
I have not done this in 30 years, last weekend one spring broke. Thank you for the instruction. I could not remember all the steps. Very nice instruction.
FYI - to anyone who is planning to do this for the first time. I watched about 20 videos on youtube on changing torsion springs. THIS VIDEO is the best one.
Excellent step by step instructions. I had may laptop in the garage watching this video and the whole procedure took just over an hour for me and that's with me screwing up one step and having to go back. Piece of cake! Thank you!!
I don't think you're the only thorough vid, however your the only one I found that covered all the bases. Several vids, even those that seemed to cover it all, couldn't compare to the way you guys covered this topic. Very easy to understand and execute. This video got me through a bind and I'd like to sincerely thank you for it.
Thanks for the kind words, M! We always make sure to spell out the steps so there is no confusion, and make sure that the safety risks are known before you undertake a project like this.
Extremely helpful and detailed video. A torsion spring broke on my garage door just before Christmas. I am quite handy and have tackled things from engine rebuilds to roofing/plumbing/electrical, but hadn't dealt with torsion springs and knew they were potentially dangerous if not handled properly. I'm grateful to have found this video and related videos you have shared regarding what to measure in order to determine which springs to order. I found those very easy to follow as well. I ordered the springs and received them extremely quickly even with the holidays. I finished the install earlier today. I probably spent 2 hours all together. I only had to tweak the # of turns from 30 to 28 to get the door to stay put when open halfway. The door now functions better than ever. Thanks again!
I am a serious DIY/fix anything and everything/ repurposer kind of guy. I was apprehensive and intimidated by garage door spring replacement. But when my left spring popped it was time for research.Being a blessed individual, Your video portrayed my exact door and the same broken spring. Your video was clear, professional and presented perfectly. The safety emphasis, step by step instructions and quality of video made replacing my broken spring a non issue. You even replaced the original springs with the exact spring upgrade I went with. I had to back off 1 full turn to get the proper float on my door. Your video was a GOD send. My highest accolades to you and your assisstant. Thanks. P.S. I have no idea how much money I saved but Iam sure it was a chunk. This is my daughters account.
Michelle Mathis Thank you for your generous words. I'm glad we could help make the project less intimidating and that you could perform the work safely with successful results, and save money in the process. Best wishes.
I did what you show on video. I replaced both of torsion springs. After replacing, my garage door works perfectly. No need to do any adjustment after that. Thank for the video and for your efforts. That is awesome video.
This video saved me at least $250 in labor costs. Job done! THANK YOU!!!! I bought my parts before I found you guys but I'm going to your site and sending you a donation for your media production efforts. This what the internet was made for!!! Keep up the good work! Please! Thanks.
My torsion spring broke over the weekend. I ordered the parts on Monday morning. DDM made the part and I picked it up one hour later and had it installed after lunch by watching this video and following the steps. However, I had to add a few quarter turns for an 8ft door vs. the 7ft door height. Thanks for the great service!
Just installed Torsion Springs for the first time. Owned many homes but have never had to. Thanks to your video and excellent teaching steps it went without a hitch and in perfect time too we are having a large scale winter storm and I needed to get my snowblower out eating some snow. Thanks!
Thank you for watching, Rich! We're glad to hear that the install went well, and hopefully you were able to get your snowblower out to tackle the snow!
I've seen about 10 garage door spring/cable installation videos. This one is clearly the most informative. You are a wiz at using time wisely too. So many videos drone on and on unnecessarily. Thank you!
Hi Triple Threat! Thanks for the kind words! We always strive to take the time to describe what is necessary, as well as the risks involved; glad you believe the time was used well!
Of course as luck would have it, one of the springs breaks on a Saturday. I found this video, ordered the springs that day, got them on Wednesday and installed them. Well done on the video, I followed it and got the work done in a couple of hours. I'm a Service Technician myself and am a bit fussy about details. This video provided just the instruction needed to do the repair without going overboard. I did have to re-grease the bearings as they were dry, cleaned the track, lubricated the door rollers. Door is quieter now and runs the track a lot smother. Thanks again.
Luis Avila Congratulations! Glad to hear the springs arrived quickly and that the job went well. I normally oil the bearings, but grease is better if you have the time to pack the bearings. Some of the online spring companies try to sell end bearings with every spring sale, but the only bearings I've seen that I would recommend replacing have the letters "ADH" stamped on them. It's rare when the rest of the end bearings wear out. You're welcome, and best wishes!
This video explained things perfectly! I just changes out both of the springs on my 18' garage door because one broke yesterday. Without this video, I would not have known to stretch the springs. I cut a 3' piece of 1/2" steel rod in half and chamfered the ends in order to make the bar tools. Thanks for posting!
You're welcome, Lenny. Stretching the springs is important for getting the door to seal to the floor correctly when finished.Thank you for your kind comments and for your suggestions for the rods. Best wishes.
DDM and UA-cam to the rescue. Simple clear instructions. Tech support helped me pick the proper longer life spring for my garage door. Straightforward installation. 31 quarter turns was the magic number for me.
One of the best how-to videos I've ever seen. Clear verbal instructions match the visual presentation exactly. Perfect for learning how to perform a potentially dangerous repair. Thank you!
Hi Michael! We're glad that you found our video to be helpful! Yes, this can be a dangerous repair if the necessary precautions aren't taken. As we always say: safety first, then work! Always make sure you are safe before attempting something like this!
We're glad to hear that this helped you get the job done, Lee! We hope that our videos will inform, as well as helping those that are completing any of these fixes on a garage door!
awesome video!! Torsion springs is now DIY, and no longer held hostage by 24/7 service calls and the associated higher costs, and upselling. Thank you so much guys. Took me 30min with the easy to follow directions.
Great concise video with the replacement going exactly as shown , just modified two items. Painted the stripe while on the ground so I wouldn't be spraying the finished drywall, scoring a chalk line also works. After 35 yrs, the light rust made sliding the rod difficult and required me to take off the bearing plates at each end to get the pulley & subsequently the springs off. Took the opportunity to scotch bright the rod ends, while minding any of the markings for the pulleys. Also used your video for weighing a garage door, as I felt the old springs were undersized from the installer eons ago & they were. From door weight spring calc apps out there, was able to properly up-size the replacement springs. Thanks for all the posted info.
DDM, Thank you for this complete tutorial. Pretty much knew the basics but the additional techniques for the torsion hardware, spools, etc., really cinched the deal. The fellow in the video went at just the right pace and didn't block the camera! Great job to all.
I bought my new springs from you company, didn't realize you are only an hour away. I followed your instructions and it worked like a charm. I still have all my fingers :)
I give to DDM Garage Doors 5/5 stars. Very good information on this video and very good customer service. I completed replacing the broken one-torsion-spring system into two-torsion-spring system on my garage that is 7'x16' for the first time last night within an hour. It was actually much easier than expected and straight forward thanks to this video. Saved me a bunch of $ on doing this myself. Changing car tires is much more work than this so if you can change tires, you should be able to do this. I also did order my replacement springs from DDM Garage Door...I provided them the garage weight, garage dimension (7x16), rail radius, and the cable drum number...they figured out for me what spring I should use. I initially paid for a different spring since I gave them the wrong cable drum number but when they reviewed my details it turns out that I needed a different set of spring which are more expensive. So that I didn't have to pay more, they gave me the priority shipping for discounted amount on 2 separate boxes.
Thanks for the kind words, and thank you for your business, David! We hope your springs are still working well for your door, and aren't causing you any issues!
This is hands down the most complete video I have found, covering each step very clearly, making sure about safety all the time. I didn't know the cones could explode, lucky I didn't try fixing the door even further. Thanks for a Great video
Great how to! Very thorough! Saved me $375 in repair costs. I re-packed the bearings in grease and fine tuned the cables so the dust skirt just touches the ground while I was at it. Works better than ever. Thanks for the detailed video, got me through the whole job in under an hour. Perfect!
Robin L Other videos do not stress safety nearly as well. I'm over 70, female, and accomplished the task alone! I am very grateful that Dan took the time to emphasize the care to focus on at each step. I watched the video twice through, then again in intervals as I did the job step-by-step. I purchased springs locally from Home Depot so as to get my door back in operation asap. I strongly recommend against the winding sticks they supplied. At only 12" long, they offered little leverage thus straining my hands and arms, and barely reached the tope enforcing strut of the door. Risky!
Hi Robin! Yes, those winding bars are much too short. The shortest winding bars that we sell are 18" long, which provides more leverage than those short bars. We also carry 24" bars and 36" bars as well. We're glad you were able to accomplish this project safely, and glad you found this to be helpful!
Swapped my broken spring and the 2nd spring both with this meticulous video in about 20 minutes. These are accurate and exact instructions and I appreciate you helping me save some money. Thanks!
I watched your video, and ordered the springs from your company. Prompt and courteous service all the way around. It took me a couple of hours and got it done. I couldn't have done it without your help. Thank you again!
ordered the right spring from DDM on the weekend using their extremely helpful website, spring showed up Wednesday and had it installed by Wednesday afternoon thanks to the incredibly detailed guidance from the website. Fantastic video here and a great experience with the company all around. The world could use more businesses like this!
Thank you ! I replaced my own Torsion Springs SAFELY!! with the help of your video. Saved $200 + and the added benefit of knowing the Job was done right. Cant thank you enough.
You're welcome, Andrew! We're glad that you were able to replace your springs yourself, safely. We always make sure to emphasize that part, because there are plenty of things that can pose a safety issue when completing a repair such as this. Safety first, then work!
I have watched many youtube videos, on many different things. this is THE BEST one i have ever seen. Many safety points made and remade, witch is a good thing, because many people don't always think ahead. I am a union sheet metal worker and believe in safety and being a true craftsman, and you sir are a TRUE CRAFTSMAN of your trade!!!! Great video!!!!
+Mark LeMere Your generous words and those of many others encourage me to keep pumping about a third of our profits back into developing our site to help our customers find the parts they need and to know how to install them when they arrive at their homes or places of business. Your kind words are most appreciated. Best wishes!
Nice video with excellent instructions. I felt safe installing two springs on my garage door. Total cost including springs, winding bars, paint and oil was $85 at Menards.
Today was a successful day, thanks to this video. I replaced both of my springs and everything is working fine now. Excellent, detailed, clear video. Thank you for posting.
I generally do most of my own handyman jobs, but torsion springs are intimidating knowing how much power is wound up. This video made it a simple job. Easy to follow and explains the why very well. Thanks for posting it!
Thank you for a detailed step-by-step instructional video. I don't usually reply to UA-cam videos. Appreciated yours enough to take the time, thanks again!
Hi Don! We appreciate you taking the time to reply. We're glad that you found the video to be informative, and hopefully it helped you accomplish the task with ease!
Thank you so much...I used this video and just converted my broken single torsion spring to two safely. My garage door is twice as quiet now and each spring is rated at 40,000 cycles vs my single spring which was rated at 15,000. Your website is also very helpful and I used it for the conversion, and ordering of my new springs and winding rods. $90 vs the $450 I was quoted, and the gratification each time I open/close my door....THANK YOU!!!
+flyyboy84 Thank you for the order and for the kind words. Glad to hear the video was helpful and that we saved you over $350. There's a deep satisfaction that comes from doing something you haven't done before. You'r welcome!
I watched a bunch of videos before attempting to change my broken torsion spring, and this one was by far the best and most thorough one. The few little added tips definitely helped make the job easier. I'd still recommend most people get a professional to do it, but this video was great for anyone confident they can do it themselves. Thanks a bunch.
+Taylor Hindley Thank you for your kind comments, Taylor. I'm glad we could help make the job go more easily for you. I agree that most people would be better off getting a professional, but they generally do that before watching videos on the subject. Mechanically inclined people tend to investigate before deciding to do the work themselves.
An outstanding instructional video. Being mechanically skilled, I thought about doing this for years but never did. Ordered new springs, followed your instructions step by step and the door works great! Thanks!
Totally agree! Just installed a set of new torsion springs using this excellent video as a guide. The step-by-step instructions and cautions are excellent. Follow them on your portable computer and you can finish the job and save yourself $$$$ in the process!
Excellent tutorial. Watched this multiple times, then completed the replacement of two springs with no problem. Some subtle details in this video I had not found elsewhere - very helpful!
First of all I would like to thank you for sharing your knowledge. I was in big trouble when my garage door got jammed with piece of metal, the whole door came off. I followed your instructions and day later had it back in place and working, This happened on a Saturday night and had it fix by Sunday. Once again thanks.
walter alvarado You're welcome, Walter. It sounds like you had major work to do on your door. Congratulations! I'm sure you felt a great sense of satisfaction when the job was finished. Best wishes.
Your video saved me a lot of money. This was the only video that showed me a different way of putting on the springs. The only thing I didn’t do was stretch the springs, I tried to stretch the springs but it didn’t work for me. My garage door is still doing great. Thanks.
Hi B Rich! We're glad that this was able to help you install the springs. You should always try to stretch them though, as this provides the springs with the ability to do their job of lifting the door better.
I followed these instuctions exactly and replaced my torsion springs myself! These detailed, step-by-step instructions were perfect. I felt safe the entire time. Thank you! :)
I was scared out of my mind about this repair before I found this video.... Excellent step-by-step instruction with nothing overlooked. Thank you so much for posting such a helpful video! I highly recommend this tutorial to anyone out there who needs to replace their torsion springs
This video was incredibly helpful to me. The instructions were precise and comprehensive. I’m relatively handy with tools but I think most folk would be able to follow these instructions. You saved me at least a couple of hundred dollars in labor!
Just completed spring set replacement. Thanks for all the info and tips. Really appreciate the instructions on how and where to position your self and wind the spring so your safe. Best instructional video I found on this. Thanks again.
Hi John! We're glad you found the video helpful. Safety is something we take very seriously, and always make sure to talk about when doing anything around a garage door. Safety first, then work!
Absolutely the BEST "how to" video I think I've ever watched. You covered every point of repair and safety. I can do this thanks to you guys! Good job!!
THANK YOU DAN! This video just saved me I'm sure a chunk of change. I've always said, "If you can't figure out how to do it from watching UA-cam, you probably shouldn't do it!"
xwarp You're welcome; glad we saved you a lot of money. And I am a UA-cam do-it-yoursel-er as well. I frequent Dr. Google for my ailments and I learn my exercises from Dr. UA-cam.
These videos have taught me a lot. Even being mechanically inclined, garage door springs were still intimidating enough to where this feat wouldn't be possible without these videos. I didn't realize, the doors on my house were never balanced right. The door never stayed in place half way up. My thinking is that because of the addition bracing required in S. Florida for strength, perhaps they were balanced before the added weight. Regardless, your videos, the right tools and a 1/2 turn later on both springs, my garage door opens perfectly. Your attention to safety is top notch and is something that cannot be overlooked when working with these doors. Kudos!
Thanks for the video. This is by far, the best video I have seen on installing torsion springs. It does a great job of describing the dangerous aspects of the job and the proper procedures for doing the job safely and efficiently. The narrator also does a great job of explaining why each of the steps are important, and what to look for when the job is complete, to assure that the springs are installed and tensioned properly.
Thank you for your generous evaluation of our video, and you're welcome. Safety is in the details and in the procedures; it's also in the ease of explanation. When the job is easy, the homeowner is less likely to get frustrated and do something dangerous, like throwing a hammer across the garage :-). I wish you all the best.
Can't thank the folks at ddmgaragedoors.com enough for all the help this past week with all the questions I had before replacing my own springs. Yes, doing this can be extremely dangerous if you're not careful. But all of the people online acting like you're going to die if you even attempt this are ridiculous. Just use common sense and follow these instructions word for word and you will find that this is a lot easier than what you probably thought. Thanks again guys, this video saved me $250 or more!
Hi Dirk! Yes, safety does need to be taken into account when replacing your springs. As you said, common sense goes a long way, and taking your time and not rushing cuts down on the chance of injury as well. As we always say: safety first, then work!
This should be the blueprint on how to produce "do-it-yourself" videos. Excellent work.
Light of the Earth Thank you for your lavish comments. They make the tedious, painstaking work worth it.
Dennis S that's what I was wondering. probably just some mad competitor not liking people doing DYI work to save $
You are absolutely right
Agree with you Dennis. Too bad about those negative reviews. This video was excellent.
To everyone's surprise in my house, I successfully replaced my springs without dying. Many thanks for this video!
We're glad you were able to replace your springs safely, Mike! Thanks for watching!
Quite possibly the best how to video ever made in the history of how to videos.
Thanks for your kind words, charlie! We hope that this proved helpful in getting your springs replaced! Blessings!
Amazing video, garage door springs are no longer a mystery. Detailed and very clear. Thank you for taking the time to do this for us.
You're welcome, and thank you for your kind comments. Best wishes.
Gary
We're glad you found it to be helpful, Gary! Safety is always the number one priority. Safety first, then work!
I meant to ask. How on earth did you get a tortion spring to break on video? Thanks again.
This is the Gold standard for all garage door torsion spring repair how to’s. Thank you.
This is probably one of the best instructional videos I've seen. You have a gift for teaching. Clear, step by step, and detailed.
Thank you for the kind words, Felix! We're glad that you found this video clear and easy to follow! Blessings!
Yesterday, I installed two new springs on 2-car BIG 8'x16' garage door. This was the best most useful, no smarty-pant video. Thank you neighbor, whereever you are. Thank you.
We're happy to help, RajPaulSeattle! We're glad this helped you install your springs successfully!
Best of any spring replacement videos with safety first.
I saw that.
Good info. Best DIY video.
Thank you, nhb! We're glad you found it to be helpful.
You're welcome, Steve, and thank you for your kind comments. I'm glad to help you extend beyond your comfort zone. Best wishes.
I bought my garage door springs from Dan a few years back. We even exchanged a couple of emails on some of my questions. I was very pleased with their delivery and customer service. I recommend this company.
Thanks you for the recommendation, Rene. I'm glad we could help. Best wishes.
Very very thorough. Safety is stressed and reinforced as it should be. Wonderful work with the video camera to show details.
A well made and informative video. Thank you
Thank you, Hugh. Best wishes.
Excellent Video! The best one on replacing garage door springs.
Keith LeRoy Thank you, Keith, for your generous words. Best wishes.
Hi Ned! We're glad you found this video helpful in getting your springs replaced and your door working again!
Hi Jeff! We're glad you learned something new! Thanks for the kind words!
My garage door torsion springs needed to be replaced.
They no longer provided adequate force to allow the garage door to open and close.
(The door had a lot of weight when lifting it up)
Rather than tightening the existing (old) torsion springs I purchase new ones as well as the torsion spring bars.
Tony Scialdone Thank you for your encouraging words. Glad to hear we could help. You're welcome. Your generous words are appreciated. Best wishes.
We're glad to hear it, Doug! We seek to provide as detailed and easy to follow information as we can to make this a successful replacement.
Thank You!
+Eric Austin Glad we could help make the job easier for you, Eric. I always enjoy learning new things. Congratulations. You're welcome. Best wishes.
You, sir, are a scholar and a gentleman! Managed to repair my garage door that was popping, jumping, and setting unevenly. Now it’s Keystone smooth!
Hi Ruben! We're glad you were able to get your door up and running again. Thanks for trusting our video to take you through the process!
I watched this video and was able to replace my spring without killing myself or tearing anything up, and it only took about an hour start to finish. Glad I found this video. It's the best one of the several I watched while waiting for my spring and winding rods to arrive. Thanks guys.
Michael Clark Congratulations, Michael! Glad to here the job went well. Your generous comments are appreciated.
Fixed my springs myself. Great explanation of each and every step. I got quotes between $200-$330. Did it myself for 87 with all the tools (I had to buy the locking pliers). God bless you for the video.
Thank you for the kind words, Murali! We're glad that you were able to get this done safely for a more inexpensive price than you thought originally!
I have not done this in 30 years, last weekend one spring broke. Thank you for the instruction. I could not remember all the steps. Very nice instruction.
We're glad we were able to walk you through the process then, Bob! Thanks for watching, and we hope the replacement went well!
FYI - to anyone who is planning to do this for the first time. I watched about 20 videos on youtube on changing torsion springs. THIS VIDEO is the best one.
Thanks for the kind words, mister mister! We hope that you were able to get your springs installed successfully!
Excellent step by step instructions. I had may laptop in the garage watching this video and the whole procedure took just over an hour for me and that's with me screwing up one step and having to go back. Piece of cake! Thank you!!
Thanks for the kind words, Dodge D100! We're glad that you were able to get your door up and running again so quickly.
I just followed these steps exactly, pausing the video as I went, and replaced my door spring without issue. Door working fine now. Thank you.
We're glad the replacement went well, Dave, and that you got the door working again!
Hi ElementL116! We're glad you found us and we're glad you were able to get your door working again!
Congratulations! Glad to here the DIY project went well and that the garage door works perfectly now. Your generous words are appreciated!
This video saved me at least $250 in labor costs. Job done! THANK YOU!!!! I bought my parts before I found you guys but I'm going to your site and sending you a donation for your media production efforts. This what the internet was made for!!! Keep up the good work! Please! Thanks.
Hi Ken! Thanks for the kind words. We're glad we were able to help you save money and accomplish this task safely!
Hi Cory, thank you for your business! We're glad that you were able to get your springs replaced so quickly! We're always happy to help!
Today I replaced my garage door springs using this video as my guide. Followed it step-by-step, and it came out perfect.Thanks.for the help.
We're so glad to hear that this worked perfectly for you, Serounian! We're always happy to help.
Hi Aggie! We're glad to hear that our sales reps were able to be of assistance, and that the install went well!
This is the best instructional video I’ve seen in any capacity. I fixed my door based on this video, with no issues at all.
Gregory Stearns Wow! The 30 minutes was fast! You're welcome, and thank you for the generous comments.
Hi Mark! Thanks for watching! We're glad you were able to use our videos to help you replace your springs and get your door up and running again!
Watched video. Ordered springs. DIYed in about 3 hours with two people and plenty of caution. This video is great! Thanks!!
Hi Doc Liquid Plays! We're so glad to hear that you were able to do this quickly and safely! Always remember: safety first, then work!
DDM, Thank you for this complete tutorial. Pretty much knew the basics but the additional techniques for the torsion hardware, spools, etc., really cinched the deal. The fellow in the video went at just the right pace and didn't block the camera! Great job to all.
We're glad you think so, Bruce! We hope that this helped ease the process of replacing your springs. Thanks for watching!
I bought my new springs from you company, didn't realize you are only an hour away. I followed your instructions and it worked like a charm. I still have all my fingers :)
We're glad to hear you came out unscathed, Gary! Thank you for your business!
Thank you, AJ! We always make sure to stress that you should make sure that you are safe first, and then go forward and do the work.
I followed your video to the letter, and had my new springs installed and the garage door functional in no time. Thank you.
We're glad you were able to get your door up and running again quickly, motobuild73! Thanks for watching!
Thanks!
Of course! We're happy to help!
I watched your video, and ordered the springs from your company. Prompt and courteous service all the way around. It took me a couple of hours and got it done. I couldn't have done it without your help. Thank you again!
Thanks for the kind words, Daniel, and thank you for your business!
ordered the right spring from DDM on the weekend using their extremely helpful website, spring showed up Wednesday and had it installed by Wednesday afternoon thanks to the incredibly detailed guidance from the website. Fantastic video here and a great experience with the company all around. The world could use more businesses like this!
Thank you so much for the kind words, yepitsodex! Blessings!
We're glad this video helped you to feel safe enough to replace the springs yourself, Don! Thanks for the kind words!
Today was a successful day, thanks to this video. I replaced both of my springs and everything is working fine now. Excellent, detailed, clear video. Thank you for posting.
Hi John! We're glad to hear that you were able to complete this successfully! Thanks for watching!
I generally do most of my own handyman jobs, but torsion springs are intimidating knowing how much power is wound up. This video made it a simple job. Easy to follow and explains the why very well. Thanks for posting it!
Hi plmn93! It can definitely be intimidating, but we're glad to hear that you replaced your springs safely!
Thanks!
Hi Handytipz! Thanks for the kind words! We're glad to hear that the replacement went well!
Totally agree!
Just installed a set of new torsion springs using this excellent video as a guide. The step-by-step instructions and cautions are excellent. Follow them on your portable computer and you can finish the job and save yourself $$$$ in the process!
Hi Ronald! We're glad that you found the instructions to be well-written, and glad to hear that the install went well!
Excellent tutorial. Watched this multiple times, then completed the replacement of two springs with no problem. Some subtle details in this video I had not found elsewhere - very helpful!
We're glad to hear that, James! Thanks for watching, and trusting our video to take you through the process!
Just completed installing my new door spring by following your directions. The door works GREAT! Thanks so much!
Congratulations, Michael. Glad to hear the door works well. You're welcome.
I followed these instuctions exactly and replaced my torsion springs myself! These detailed, step-by-step instructions were perfect. I felt safe the entire time. Thank you! :)
You're welcome, Fred. Thank you for your kind comments. Safety is in the details. Verbalizing them is the hard part. Glad we could help.
I was scared out of my mind about this repair before I found this video.... Excellent step-by-step instruction with nothing overlooked. Thank you so much for posting such a helpful video! I highly recommend this tutorial to anyone out there who needs to replace their torsion springs
We're glad that you found this video helpful, Matt! We hope that you were able to replace your springs successfully!
This video was incredibly helpful to me. The instructions were precise and comprehensive. I’m relatively handy with tools but I think most folk would be able to follow these instructions. You saved me at least a couple of hundred dollars in labor!
Hi Shaun! Thanks for the kind words. We strive to make all of our instructions as well explained as possible, as well as easy to understand.
Good job!!
+Rick Roemer Rick, thank you for your glowing comments. Glad we could help, and that you could do the work. You're welcome; best wishes.
Kudos!
alreinike Congratulations. Glad you were able to study your door and to figure out the solution for the problem. Your kind words are appreciated.
