As a newer home owner I can't thank you enough for this video. Had a spring break and wanted to fix it myself. Had a older setup that didn't have some of the same hardware as in this video. Upgraded everything easily thanks to this video. My garage door runs a lot smoother than before.
Thanks to this detailed description I was able to not only reinstall my spring new cables and pulleys but I was also able to make my garage more quiet I appreciate your patience and concise explanations in detail thank you.
Really good explanation and demonstration! I replaced my cable a long time ago, but didn't remember how to do it. I do remember how nervous I was about it due to safety issues. Your video makes the process very clear. Thanks!
Very helpful video. The attachment hook got wedged inside the spring when it snapped and couldn't be remove. The replacement hook was difficult to find so I had to buy an adjustment bolt with the hook on end and it worked fine. I also replaced a few rollers. Saved about $250. on one garage door and learned something. Parts cost about $65. I'm ready when the 2nd door breaks. Thanks.
I have an older home in which only one of the extension springs broke. Unfortunately, neither the remaining spring nor the broken one is color coded to indicate weight. Is there some other way to figure out what spring to get? I'm willing to replace both springs, but I don't know the weight of the door - should I just go with the strongest spring available?
Hi! In this case you can weigh your garage door using a scale, we create a video here that walks you through how to do it. We hope this helps ua-cam.com/video/okOJlabAMh4/v-deo.html
I want to say thank you! I had a spring break and garage door repair guy said he would only put in a large center torsion spring. Got a quote for over $900. I bought my Ideal parts at Menards and followed your video successfully. $81.00 total! Thanks so much!
I think that is SOP. They will claim liability, but it's really because they can't make enough money doing it. While torsion springs are much safer, people still hurt themselves working on them. Still, when I did a friend's garage, I converted it to a torsion spring using upgraded parts, like a center ball bearing and a high cycle spring, for something like $130 in parts. One reason he may have a high quote is they might put a new track or something else in. I had to modify the one I was working on to adapt it to the torsion hardware.
Excellent information. Thank you so much. I'm not really sure the correct springs are on this door so the part about weighing the door is very useful. The color on the spring that has any left on it looks yellow maybe. Is there a yellow spring? I'll weigh the door and then proceed with getting the right parts and hopefully install it all safely. Thanks again. Jesus bless.
Thanks very much. I'll guess I'll remove the one and take to Lowes or garage door store. I only want to remove and replace one, so weighing the door is out as it'd be too much a PITA to remove both springs.
You CAN NOT replace one spring at a time. BOTH have to be replaced at the same time. This is not about what you want, it is simple physics. The door will not open properly and will have one side pulling strong than the other which will pull it out of the track or bind up and break the joints. If you are too lazy to do work yourself, hire a company to do it or leave it broken.
How should the door wheels look when sitting in the track? Are they suoposed to touch both sides of the track? Mine only touch one side and flop around like the wheels are too small for the track.
That's great!! We are happy that this video has helped you save money! Also, if you have to replace a garage door spring, remember to change the second one as well. That's why we are selling a 2 pack! www.idealinc.com/en/door-and-window-hardware/garage-doors/pullies-springs-amp-cables/springs-p2-2-pack-of-garage-door-springs-safety-cables
Hi, just put on two new 150 lb springs on 150 lb door (matches original), but can’t decrease tension as you showed. The door when close (not on opener track) springs open all the way! Help?
at what point is the extension spring cable attached to the bottom of the door? do i attach the loop end to the bottom of the door first?, should there be a clicking sound to know it is secure? , do i next run the non loop end up and over the stationary pully then run it over and then under the moving pulley, pull it until there is some tension then tie the cable to the plate and plate to S hook?
Hi Nicole, here's a breakdown of your questions and our answers Q: At what point is the extension spring cable attached to the bottom of the door? A: Right after removing the S-hook (in the video after 3:38). Q: Do I attach the loop end to the bottom of the door first? A: Yes. Q: Should there be a clicking sound to know it is secure? A: No sound. Just make sure the loop is inside the groove in the bottom pin. Q: Do I next run the non loop end up and over the stationary pully then run it over and then under the moving pulley, pull it until there is some tension then tie the cable to the plate and plate to S hook? A: Yes. We hope this helps!
My problem is that I was replacing extension spring for my garage door yesterday and garage door go down only half way and go back. Do you know what I did wrong ?
Ideal Security garage door springs are for 7 ft height opening sectional garage doors only. They are measured 25” long (spring body) with the door fully open, and 67” long when the door is fully closed. The door should be able to stop halfway, can be pull down to close, and push up to fully open. If not, verify spring load rating vs your door weight, they should be equal.
Hello. Yes, here is what will happen when using a stronger spring for the lighter door: If your door is manually operated, you will have to use greater force to close the door and if you let go of the door, it will fly open. The motor will work harder for doors with an electric opener.
If you have a bathroom scale, you can set the garage door on it (with both springs unattached, to get the correct weight.) Or, take your old spring to the hardware store and find one that is the exact same size in length, width, and coils per inch.
Replace both, if 1 broke the other may fail and can be dangerous, they are cheap home depot sells 2 4 $20. Weigh the door and check box for spring recommendation like single 9' door is 100- 110lb spring...
+NP Yup. There is a good chance you'll break something if you try to use an opener with no springs, unless your opener is adjusted correctly, in which case it will just blink at you.
There might be multiple reasons why you cannot open your garage door. We suggest you get in touch with a specialist who can probably assess your situation and suggest the proper course of action.
This was probably the worst video I have ever seen, the guy does not hold the camera long enough, doesn't show you where the cable connects to at the bottom of the door. Completely pushing through the video
Very helpful video. I've had issues for years, and now I understand how to do this properly!
So glad to hear this was helpful!

Can't thank you enough for this video. It's -9° here and and I thought it would take us all day to replace while freezing but we were done in 15 mins

As long as the spring has no tension on it, it is safe to remove. If you are removing the spring with the door closed, that's the wrong way.

If it is black??
If your spring if black you'll have to weigh your garage door. Skip to around 1:10 in the video, it shows how. It's not hard.
didnt work cable keeps pulling on the wheels when lowering
