Rutger Hauer - an amazing and underrated actor for sure.
I encounter the term "Amazing" numerous times daily.
If I were to ignore the symptomatic nature of this experience, that would be amazingly ignorant of me.
R.I.P Rutger Hauer. He was such an amazing actor, but he somehow never really got away from playing in b-movies mostly.
Ridley Scott had made a HUGE impact with Alien. Then this movie comes out. It's visionary, but not like Alien. I think that's the main reason it didn't so well the first time around. That and most audiences weren't ready for it. That was the summer of ET, Raiders of the Lost Ark, and Poltergeist. Blade Runner is a completely different kind of movie.
I remember seeing this for the first time in a college film class, and not thinking much of it.
But then I ended up seeing it at a Flashback Cinema showing years later. Ironically, it was the year 2019 when I saw it, which definitely heightened the experience.
I really appreciated the neo-noir vibes of the story, and I love how distinctive the visuals and score are. Not everyone's cup of tea, but I'm glad you got a chance to check it out and do a reaction! 👏👏👏
(Oh, and Blade Runner 2049 is definitely connected to this film. I won't spoil how, but it's certainly worth checking out without reading anything or watching the trailer beforehand.)
Roy’s death scene is the most beautiful death scene in film.
EJO's character "Gaff" was essentially a Greek Chorus/Narrator commenting on the story through symbolism. Each of the origami's represent his observation. When Deckard tries to refuse the job, Gaff makes a chicken. When Deckard puts the test on Rachael he obviously likes her, Gaff makes a man with an erection. The unicorn literally says Gaff was there but is giving them a head start, indicating that it is because she is a unique being like a unicorn. (But also suggesting that he knows Deckards dreams the way he knew Rachael's memories, and that he too may be a Replicant and not know it)
Perfect rainy day to watch this!
You keep mentioning the world building which is incredible. In the book Earth was devastated by nuclear war and most humans have moved off world. They might have replaced nuclear for environmental collapse in this film. Most species are extinct so that's why there are so many manufactured animals. It's rainy, dark and sparsely populated. Love the look of this film. Rutger Hauer's final monologue and his opportunity to face his creator (what would you do?) are some of my favorite moments in film.
Pinocchio is trying to become ‘Human’ and the Blue Fairy does not exist.
Vangelis did the soundtrack, which the entirety of is right here on Y.t.. for you to listen to for those times you want to chill out or read something.
This is my all time favorite science fiction film. This is based on the book, "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep" a book written by Philip K. Dick.

The ideas put out by this movie are fascinating. How can an android have thoughts and feelings regarding their own expiration or death?
Phillip K. Dick, the author of "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? (the novel behind this movie), often often was pretty deep. His overall theme was "The Nature of Reality".
He also wrote the stories behind "Minority Report", "Total Recall", and many other, even "Man in the High Castle".
Unfortunately he died before he could observe his influence on modern culture.
Blade Runner is a tougher film to assess. Because it just hits differently for different people.
Very much a "one person's trash is another person's treasure" kinda thing.
For the people that it really hits for, it REALLY hits. As in one of the top movies ever made.
For everyone else, I think they just aren't connecting with those same pieces. Or at least not in the same way. And it's just not working for them at that level. Some of them even get really mad that others claim to be so touched, when they just don't get that connection. They often just want to change the film to something more their taste. Or load it up with genre staples they like, that they'd want to see added in.
But the things that the not connecting people often want to change, are the the very pieces that create the magic and resonance for those it hits for. To remove or change those pieces, would shift and disrupt the magic.
It's also interesting that there are now many different released versions of Blade Runner. And commonly, each of these version's differences, significantly shifts the experience of those who love Blade Runner. People who love Blade Runner will often get a very different experience from the different versions, and often have their favorite.
I saw, and prefer, the original theatrical release when it came out. That version has a voice-over that elevates the 40's detective noir feel. Also, at the end, in the voice-over we find out that Deckard knew that Rachel had no expiration date. It was a secret, as part of her being a special model. The other cop let her live, not knowing that she would continue. That version ends with an aerial shot of them driving north thru the woods, escaping together.
For me this is more like a 5 star film, and I really enjoy the music and pacing. They vary so that you can rest and catch your breath in the lulls between action. And the music seems to me very well-matched to the visuals to build this strange world.
There is a huge debate as to whether Deckard is a replicant. I am firmly of the opinion that he is not. One of the supporting arguments is that if he were, you would lose the comparison between human and replicant as to perspective on life and so forth. Plus, he got the crap beaten out of him - not likely to have happened if he was one of them. Also, he is on the loose "retired" when we meet him. That would not have been the case if he were another replicant, he would have been in containment. The point of the end is that Roy valued Deckard's life more than Deckard did Roy's. Kind of puts the shoe on the other foot in terms of motivation and perspective. Roy wanted an ear and a witness too, as he died.
I did not enjoy 2049 as much as this movie, but it is definitely worth seeing as a follow-up. It will kind of blow your mind, especially compared to the rules and setup we saw here.

The author of the short story understood Deckard to be human. The Director of the Movie understood him to be a replicant.

The only way Gaff would know of Deckard's unicorn dream would be if Deckard was a replicant who has a bio-record Gaff could read and look up as a cop. Gaff was basically a handler to Deckard, making sure he was on the job.
Regarding the "foreplay" scene - I felt quite uncomfortable by Deckard's behaviour when I first saw this film in the mid-80's, so I'd say that it wasn't considered normal back then either. That's about the only scene I'm not keen on in this otherwise superb film. Thanks for an excellent reaction, I appreciated your ending thoughts in particular.
There's another version with narration by Deckard. It omits the unicorn dream.
One of my favorite fantasy movies was LadyHawke with Rutger Hauer, Michelle Pfieffer, & Matthew Broderick. Best roles, IMO, I've ever seen any of them in. Also loved Rutger in this.
The white unicorn symbolizes the same thing that the origami unicorns symbolize that James Olmos' character creates. Also him saying, "It's too bad she won't live. But then again who does is stated once earlier, & then echoed in a memory of him saying it, when she steps over the paper unicorn towards the end. Tyrell said that Rachel was an experiment - that's all. She did not have the same background, history, or mode of operation that the other 4 replicants did. So I've always taken from all of this, that Tyrell did not create her the same. He did not give her an expiration date, & gave her memories & feelings. Kept her from "slavery", & kept FROM her altogether that she was a replicant. So there's no telling how long she has. And she can pass as a human.
The origami unicorn suggests Gaff knew about Dekerd's unicorn dream. Is Dekerd a replicant?
That's what I was thinking towards the end! Hence my title "who's a replicant?!"

Good to see you watching this film. I saw it as a youngster and it became one of my all time favourites along with Alien. For me, I like the slow pace of some older films (and new films, particularly foreign films). This has very much a Noir feel, a genre I enjoy. I would certainly follow this up with BR2049. I think the music in BR2049 also works seamlessly with the visual, taking over some of the Vangelis feel.
How did Edward know he dreamed about a unicorn?
I'm glad to see that it hit you, that the replicants aren't really villains. A lot of people miss that, their first time through. But indeed, they're runaway slaves, and all they want is to not die. Really, Deckard is a villain. And he knows it. And that's why he hates what he does, and resolves, after the death of Roy Batty, not to do it anymore, and goes on the run. Making the choice Bryant told him he didn't have. God, I love this movie.

Real photographs have an advantage over their digital counterparts in that ALL the information is there. Where as in a digital photo is limited by the memory of the available.
In theory, one could blow up (zoom in) on a section of photo almost infinitely. All that information is in the photo. The limit is only based on the camera and the paper the photo was processed on. That’s why high end film photography still exists.
The ending: He knew his dreams! He knew about the unicorn! Deckert is a Replicant.
Rutger was a great actor. I like and appreciate this movie more than i ever did before.
Still not my favorite, but great nonetheless. You need to see Hardware from 1990
but go in blind with no trailer no nothing if you can. One of my favorite lower budget
and scale Sci-fi Horror flicks. Saw in the theater and it really grabbed me.

Great reaction David! The futuristic cityscape reminded me of the ones in THE FIFTH ELEMENT, METROPOLIS and the STAR WARS prequels. I once owned BLADE RUNNER and BLADE RUNNER 2049 on 4K but I could not warm up to them. I watched both of them several times and tried to find a reason to keep them in my collection but I could not. I finally ended up giving them away to a thrift store. But still, I give both Blade Runner films a 3 out of 5. I admire them but they are just not my favorites. Oh, maybe you should also react to THE HITCHER with Rutger Hauer. That movie was brutal! 😁
I didnt like this movie at first. The second time I was intrigued, the third I fell in love. I had a similar experience when I started listening to Queen. This movie has a rythym, an artistic, psychedlic qualtiy that at first doesnt click for most people. The content is also coming closer to reality so the questions raised become more relevant today as we begin to interact with AI and robotics.

Well Decard was not the perfect Me-Too gentleman. But he knew Rachel was a replicant and did not kill her - but something rather different.
The VK test is based on Empathic response detected in physical expressions.

IMO, Blade Runner is a legendary film that gets better on each rewatch. If it doesn't grab you the first time around I'll say it's probably due to pre-programmed expectations. Once those tropes are shattered you're freed to better appreciate the purpose and true intentions of this epic story.
I cannot rebut this on personal anecdotes. First I saw it from a cable recording with ads in the middle, and thought it was decent, but it left some splinter in my mind. Eventually I watched it again so that I could watch the sequel and thought it was pretty good. I'm on 4 watches now, and I'm starting to wonder if it is my favorite movie. Of course, 2049 is basically right next to it.
It's a 6 out of 5. It's clear that you went into this with preconceived notions that you wouldn't let go of. The score, by Vangelis, is considered a classic. This is not an action movie, it's a meditation on what does it mean to be human.
no, deckers weird 'foreplay' scene was so odd and cringy.. whether in the 80s or even now.. its caused me to search for some meaning behind it.. but since nothing comes to me, i assume it was just harrison ford, especially since ive seen him do similar things in other movies to a lesser degree

Coming to this late, but, to confirm, it was still both illegal and socially unacceptable for a man to force himself on a woman any kind of way in the 1980s. I'd just hate for my generation to look like barbarians. Now a dude I worked with, who was like, WWII vet aged, was telling inappropriate shore leave stories in mixed company at the office. But we took care of that problem.

I mashed those terms a few years ago when I realized what movies actually are.
They are Yin + Yang, Left + Right, Plus + Negative. 🤣
The replicants are ‘cloned’ humans that are entirely fabricated from an artificial DNA template so they can’t be “Fixed”. In the end, Roy’s emotions allowed him to feel “Regret” so he spared Decker. It has also been suggested that Decker himself was a “Replicant” of a special kind which is why he dreamed about a ‘Unicorn’ because HE was the Unicorn - Unique, One - Of - A - Kind and an experiment they were never able to reproduce.
Finaly a reasonable explanation for the audience)))
Also, a unicorn represents or symbolizes male virility. Deckard's rising feelings for Rachel.
Plus, in that moment where Roy saves Deckard he's realizing that all life is important, not just his.
When Deckard sees the origami unicorn, he knows that Gaff has been there, and left Rachael alive. When he thinks back to Gaff saying 'It's too bad she won't live, but then again, who does,' he realizes that it wasn't a threat...it was Gaff's way of saying 'She's as real as any of us...get her, and run.' And that's exactly what he does.
Too bad it is not that obvious in final cut. In 1982 version the end fits perfectly.
This is the greatest movie of all time, IMO. The visuals, the soundtrack, everything comes together to give us this

My favorite movie of all time.
Here’s why it’s so special. 1. The visuals. Every shot is carefully, meticulously framed. The lighting, the atmosphere, the world building. Every visual element was original to this film. 2. The score. Composed and performed all by one person, Vangelis, it’s at once beautiful, mysterious, evocative, and powerful. Some of the the songs have haunted me since I first saw it. 3. The plot, which takes me to your misapprehension regarding the nature of the replicants.
Replicants aren’t androids, per se. They are 100% organic. They have human emotions, but with no childhood or parents, they have no time to understand their own emotional responses (the false memories with which they are implanted are to try to better control them…the idea being, memories help them make sense of their emotions, put them in context, so they don’t lose touch with their very limited sense of “self” and go crazy.) They are grown, given life, clothing, a job, and then tossed into their very short lives as servants to regular humans. It’s precisely why they act so strangely, something you commented on several times. They are manufactured slaves, treated without any regard to pain, or rights, or the slightest concern.
You were very astute in your reaction to Roy (Rutger’s) speech as he dies. That speech is broadly considered one of finest monologs in the history of cinema. It encapsulates in a few sentences the tragedy of the human condition. We live, everything that is so important to us lives within us…”all those moments”…then we die, and everything we have, everything we were, is washed away, and lost.
That’s a major point in Blade Runner. We can see, if we just look, the humanity in the replicants, who are only trying to survive. They just want more life. When Deckard kills the first female replicant…the snake charmer woman….remember, she’s just trying to run away. She’s terrified. She’s just trying to live just like any of us would.
I first saw Blade Runner in my mid-teens. For me, that scene, when Deckard shoots that woman in the back as she’s trying to flee…it changed me. I saw the world differently. “Action” scenes in t.v. and movies got changed in my head to “violence” after that. And then, at the end of the movie, when Roy saves Deckard - the man who had just killed Pris, and who was trying to kill Roy - I thought a long time about why. Why didn’t he just let Deckard fall?
Eventually, I decided it was because Roy didn’t want his last act in life to be someone else’s death. Knowing his own life was about to end, all life became precious to him. And, maybe most of all, he didn’t want to die alone.
Blade Runner isn’t an action movie. It’s a lesson about how fragile and precious life is. All life, and everyone’s life. And that, in the end, we’re all in this together, and we all die. Everything that gets in the way of seeing our common humanity is just bullshit. Anyway, that’s what it means to me, and why it’s been my favorite film for nearly four decades. It is “slow” but it has to be, to give us time to think about what we’re really seeing, and to feel our way to empathy for the “bad guys”, who are, of course, just like us.
And then, of course, that unicorn? Where did we see it? In Deckard’s dream, or in his imagination. Why on Earth would the Eddie Olmos character leave an origami unicorn outside Deckard’s door? How would he have possibly known it was of any significance to Deckard?
He was also the president of Wayne Enterprise in Batman begins, excellent in Ladyhawk, and played in a sci-fi killer movie with Kim Katrell.
Most people point out why we don't have the flying cars, but this guy is right. We don't even have the neon light umbrellas. We have truly, completely failed as a species.
Definitely watch 2049 when you get the chance it's great!

id give it 5 out of 5 stars.. not because its perfect, but its not like the other great movies are either.. id hate to carry this 5 out of 5 around in my pocket my whole life.. release it like a dove in the end
25 years after the movie came out Joanna Cassidy went back into costume to reshoot her death scene for the Final Cut because in a couple of shots of Zora crashing through the glass you can tell it’s a stunt double in a wig.
Roy's desperation, sadness and PITY for his enslaved tormentor is heartbreaking one slave to another...
Try and find the narrated version of this movie and watch it. It'll answer a lot of questions. M

I like the narrated version of this movie, which was the theatrical version released back in 1982.
Me too. I saw cca 20 reviews of the final cut. All of them (except this one) ends with reviewers' confusion: "that's it?", "that's the end?" . The 1982 version doesn't leave any such questions.
Deckard is not a Replicant. First off, he gets his ass handed to him by other Replicants. Two, Deckard's arc starts with him hating Replicants and then ends with him falling in love with one. That arc would be meaningless if Deckard is himself a Replicant. Three, even the book makes it very clear he's human.
By the way, I love Rachel. She has this WWII secretary aesthetic that is REALLY doing it for me. 😍
Fun Fact: The "snake scale" seen under the electron microscope was actually a marijuana bud.
Schüfftan Process Fact: Director Sir Ridley Scott and director of photography Jordan Cronenweth achieved the famous "shining eyes" effect by using a technique invented by Fritz Lang. Light is bounced into the actors' and actresses' eyes off of a piece of half mirrored glass mounted at a forty-five-degree angle to the camera.
Permanent Memento Fact: After Pris (Daryl Hannah) first meets J.F. Sebastian (William Sanderson), she runs away from him, skidding into his car and smashing the window with her elbow. This was a genuine mistake caused by Hannah slipping on the wet ground. The glass wasn't breakaway glass, it was real glass, and Hannah chipped her elbow in eight places. She still has the scar from the accident.
