We may be hundreds of miles away from an ocean, but that doesn't mean it's entirely out of our reach. In 1991 the Shedd Aquarium brought a slice of the Pacific Northwest to Chicago - the Oceanarium! An awe inspiring attraction that is still claimed as the world's largest marine mammal indoor pavillion. Settled along a rocky shore that blends with the waters of Lake Michigan, are harbors and lagoons teaming with rescued sea otters, barking sea lions, chirping belugas, and one of the world's most athletic dolphins. On this episode, you'll quickly realize why the AZA gave this project the Top Honors award for exhibit design, and why it continues to inspire millions of people a year. Enjoy.

*Today's conservation spotlight goes to marine Mammals in need. I donated to the Pacific Marine Mammal Center, a non-profit organization based in Laguna Beach, California. Their mission statement is to rehabilitate, and release marine mammals and inspire Ocean stewardship through research, education, and collaboration.*

As a note from a friend who worked there for a bit, the large pool is shared between the dolphins and belugas, with the dolphins being more active during the day and the belugas at night, so the large pool is used during each species active times. The 4th general pool is normally just open to the Belugas, but is more of an introduction pool for if/when there are new animals being brought in to prevent any potential issues in that it can be "opened" to the main pool or the Beluga pool, but is able to prevent any potential aggression...and can be segregated from the others with an independent filtration to work for quarantine, letting the animals still communicate, but not risking contamination issues.
At least, that's what they were told when they worked there when the oceanarium was new

White sided dolphins also inhabit the emerald sea which is a temperate sea that gets its name cause the waters are so dense with plankton that’s waters are emerald green.
