Oh boy...welcome to the Kubrick insanity version of Vietnam...it definitely makes an impression, doesn't it?
I have never seen it specifically stated by Kubrick anywhere, but Private Pyle is a clear representation of a real program that the Defense Department ran in the 1960s. It was called "Project 100,000" and it was a test to see whether the mental and physical parameters for serving in the US military could be widened to make the pool of potential service people larger. Between escalation in Vietnam and all the other military commitments of the Cold War in those days, the military was concerned about a shortage of people to serve. So they started testing whether recruits who were normally just a bit below the normal standard for IQ, or emotional stability, or physical fitness could be turned into effective military personnel. The same program probably would have led to Forrest Gump being recruited and serving in Vietnam. The program had various nicknames including "McNamara's Misfits" and "McNamara's Morons" in honor of Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara.
Sorry if somebody already commented this. 👍

Jsyk, it took the NVA/VC two years to launch the Tet Offensive all across South Vietnam. And it ended up "militarially" being an absolute failure but it influenced the media and anti-war movement in the US.

I went to boot camp in San Diego, not Parris Island (that was for recruits east of the Mississippi River), and even though this took place 20 years prior to me going in in 1989, the boot camp half of the movie still holds up. We did not get hit, but things happen when DI's get a little amped up. bah, whatcha gonna do? Tell on them and be a little you know what? The soap scene, that's called a blanket party...and ummm, certainly is not tolerated or condoned, wink wink. Weapons are locked up every night and recruits do not sleep with them. Really the biggest difference is in the movie, it's a Senior Drill Instructor doing all the yelling, running, PT, etc, but in reality, there are usually 2 or 3 other Drill Instructors doing all that, while the Senior Drill Instructor plays the role of the "nice guy" in comparison, but do not embarrass him or you will have a very bad day.

Shaving the heads to my knowledge...quite a few reasons. It's neater, easier on the hygiene, everyone looks the same, there actually is a tactical advantage in hand to hand combat if your enemy can pull your hair vs it being too short to pull, etc. From what I understand, they weren't aware that their heads were going to get shaved for this scene, so their sad faces are apparently quite real.

The purpose of the way youre treated in Marine corps boot camp, is to train you to perform with efficiency and purpose in the most difficult of situations. When you trained to function under extreme, it transfers over to when bullets are whizzing by, bombs going off and all the chaos of war surrounds you and just doesnt stop. If you can open a combination lock with 4 drill instructors...yes, most platoons have 4, not 1 DI, screaming in your face and pushing you, then youve a huge advantage in many situations.
NOTE....there are a few scenes where you see other DIs in the background, just never focused on. Imagine having 4 DIs, all with their own unique ways of training and treating you. The scariest, toughest best DI when I went through bootcamp wall the smallest most unassuming of the 4.

The guy who played drill instructor Hartman, Lee Ermy, was a real life Marine drill instructor. He was brought in as an advisor by Kubrick for authenticity's sake & ended up getting the part. I was born in 1956 and was just a few years shy of dealing with the draft. Vietnam was not a popular war. Therefore they initiated a draft which was how you ended up with people like Private Pyle. Stanley Kubrick was staunchly anti-war so this is essentially an ant-war movie that is also very realistic... a bit unlike his other anti-war film , Dr. Strangelove, which was parody & comedy. You should do a reaction to that.
A couple of film reaction suggestions: Blazing Saddles & Young Frankenstein by director Mel Brooks, The Third Man directed by Carol Reed and starring Orson Welles, Touch Of Evil directed by Orson Welles, Slaughterhouse Five directed by George Roy Hill, Blue Velvet and The Elephant Man directed by David Lynch, No Country For Old Men by the Coen Brothers, Taxi Driver, Goodfellas & Raging Bull directed by Martin Scorcese, This Is Spinal Tap by Rob Reiner & An American Werewolf in London by John Landis. Just a few off the top of my head.

During the Vietnam War they had a hard time recruiting for the military. Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara reduced the intelligence requirements for 5he military so that they could accept severely mentally challenged men.
They were dubbed McNamara's Morons. And m9st of the senior enlisted as well as senior officers, knew these guys woud be useless, get themselves killed or get others killed so they aggressively trried to weed them out.
But they were being odered to let them in.
Private Pyle is supposed to be one of these guys. Vincent DeNofrio plays the character as a child to demonstrate his mental challages in Boot Camp.

I can only speak from post-Vietnam US Navy.
    1. There are always more than one CC in boot camp (at least in the Navy) where partially recruits can't be abused. Verbal abuse is one thing but physical was a NO GO.
    2. Vincent D'Onofrio played the Bug in "Men in black", and had to put on 50lbs for this role
    3. Hardman was out of control. Others outside his recruits would have noticed and he would have been held accountable.
    4. "I don't know, but I've been told. Eskimo pussy is mighty cold." was used in my Navy recruit company in 1981.
    5. In the US Navy real live ammo was always accounted for, and Pyle wouldn't have had it on his person in the head.
    6. The lights in the head are always lit. (lighting I suspect).
    7. "Blanket parties" were a real deal. We didn't have one because we didn't have a Gomer Pyle.
    8. The hooker in Saigon is just distracting them so the motorcycle guys can steal the camera. I saw that happen in the Philippines.
    9. "I wouldn't shit you, you're my favorite turd" I've used that before.
    10. Even by Hollywood standards, Kubrick went overboard with excessive bloodletting.

    Marine here
Haircuts - uniformity and utility. Look the same and no time wasted in grooming
Brutality in boot camp - this was wartime, and folks needed to drop bad habits from civilian life asap. When I went through in 1991, no DI's were allowed to beat you or put their hands on you.
Ridiculous 'Games' in boot camp - absolutely, they had us doing goofy shit all the time whenever anyone screwed up. The more ridiculous the better because you'd never forget it.
(we had a guy leave his footlocker unlocked and they came around while were out doing PT and unlocked all our locks and locked them together and then gave us 5 minutes to find our lock and remove it and secure our foot lockers. There were 66 guys in our platoon.... it was the definition of a 'Clusterfuck')
Marine Boot Camp is now 13 weeks long, it was 8 weeks during Viet Nam - they needed boys out there in the fleet ASAP
Open Bathrooms - The 'Head' as they are called. I was in MCRD San Diego, 30+ years ago... I think we had stalls but I don't remember if the stalls had doors. Maybe Parris Island had open Heads?
Section 8 - Unfit for Military Service. At that time they didn't accept Gay Marines, and they were lumped in with people that were deemed 'undesirables' Trans, Chronic Mastrubators, Crazy people.
Once in Viet Nam the film shows a Marine Door Gunner (Crew Chief) shooting civilian farmers for fun...
I'm aware that there were incidents of illegal killings, r#pes, and assaults, but they were not common at all and they certainly were not just witnessed and blithely accepted by your fellow servicemen.
I love Full Metal Jacket, but I know that like many Hollywood films, it exaggerates and exacerbates situations like this for dramatic effect
    It's borderline anti-Marine propaganda.
Fun side note, the actor playing that Door Gunner was the original actor slated to play Gunnery Sergeant Hartman, Tim Colceri had prepared for 8 months to play Hartman, but when Kubrick saw R. Lee Ermey's audition tape, it was a hilariously dark and profane rant, and Kubrick changed the roles.
