The reason the mom started laughing is because Spielberg told her that Elliott was going to say something as an insult and she had no idea that PB was coming. It was a genuine reaction.

He wasn't the first choice, another kid was chosen but whilst he could act, after losing a game of Dungeons & Dragons being played on set during further casting he showed his real colours when he lost. He kicked off and became a real asshole of a kid and the casting director realised the real person behind the act wasn't the sweet innocent 9 year old they wanted and nobody liked him so they axed him. Word reached them about a young boy from Texas called Henry who seemed to be the real deal, a great kid who could also act. Due to time constraints after the first error of judgement with their initial choice for Eliot, Spielberg had him flown out to audition in front of him in person along with the Producers. He was given a general premise and asked to improvise. Famously, at the end, with hardened Hollywood producers in tears, you can hear Spielberg tell him: "Ok Kid, you got the job..."
Michael was the perfect portrayal of someone in his position. When he goes off on Elliot after he reveals that their father is in Mexico with his new woman, that desire to protect his mother is exactly right for the oldest son.
I hate this movie. I think it's such a saccharine, cloying, obnoxious, manipulative, piece of ugly, annoying, irritating, disjointed and pathetically forced garbage and E.T himself is the closest thing to a an actual sleep paralysis demon that is possible to exist. I make absoutely no apologies for despising this movie deeply still to this day as much as I did the first time I saw it as a child.

Fun fact: because George Lucas allowed Steven Spielberg to have Star Wars references in this movie, Spielberg then allowed Lucas to have an E.T. reference in Star Wars! In the first movie of the Prequels, in Phantom Menace, you can see that there are three E.T.'s in the senate!
And because of that there was a rumor going around that even Lucas and Spielberg even entertained was ET being a Padawan and that's why when he said home to Yoda that he was remembering his time on coruscant

The agreement was that Spielberg would be able to reference Star Wars to help advertise Return of the Jedi which was coming out the following year, in return, Lucas would reference ET in the prequels when he put them out. Fan theories later came out to think that ET was a Jedi due to knowing Yoda and having Jedi like powers. My favorite theory on the matter is that This was just after Order 66 and ET was a surviving Jedi fleeing the Empire. He fled to his home planet and then they went to earth to avoid Empire searches of the planet. Though he was lost on Earth and they returned as soon as it was safe to bring him back without fear of being discovered.
I was 7 when this came out. I saw it five times. Three times in a regular theater and two times in a drive-in. I was obsessed with it and I cried every time.
My favourite moment, that many people miss, is when they are saying goodbye, and older brother Michael and ET are suddenly face to face, and you can tell that Michael isn’t really sure what to say and it’s a bit awkward. Now Michael and ET don’t really interact directly much or at all during the movie, but Michael does a lot to help. He helps to hide ET, he goes to the forest to bring him back, he drives the van to escape and is one of the riders in the bike chase to escape the authorities. ET acknowledges this and just says “Thank you”….to which Michael simply replies “you’re welcome “ And nothing else needs to be said and they leave it there.
The extra Terrestrials each had jobs on their ship. E.T. Was a Botanist he studied and took care of plants. That’s what he was doing when he got left behind. He was looking for plants to take back with him.
The soundtrack is the real star here. This is, in my opinion, John Williams finest creation and that's some body of work to pick from ! The whole 'Adventures on Earth' suite from the beginning of the final escape and chase leading to that final rainbow stanza is PERFECT. It never, ever fails to reduce this 50+ year old guy to tears. Wonderful work from the Maestro of Maestros and he knew it because it was one of the rare occasions where Williams actually asked Spielberg to hear what he had composed without the footage. Why ? Because he couldn't match the visuals with the score as per usual but he knew he had something special. Spielberg agreed and once he'd heard it he took the movie back and re-edited the final scene to match the score.
"That's traumatizing as hell." Now imagine watching this at 8 years old. I think it might have been the first movie I ever saw in the theater. It's one of the formative images/movies of my life.
I was born in 1986, so I didn't have the joy of seeing it theatrically when it opened, but millennials I've spoken to said it scared them and I'm sure some Gen-Xers would say the same. There's some moments that may be a bit unsettling for little kids, but the film was never meant to be scary. Spielberg's other movie that came out the same month, 'Poltergeist', *that* was meant to be scary haha.
Pretty sure all the humans in the movie also recognize Yoda given that he's available as a costume. Michael even talked like him, and Elliott has Star Wars toys.
1982 was not only a great year for sci-fi films (Blade Runner, Tron, The Thing, Wrath of Khan, etc...), but also a fantastic one for movie scores: Conan the Barbarian, Rocky III, First Blood, Poltergeist, etc...
Fun fact: Contrary to the usual practice, this film was shot in chronological sequence to elicit a more intense emotional performance from the child actors.
OMG my childhood. I saw this 12 times at the theater when I was 10 years old. I cried every time. This movie was my favorite movie for so long (replaced by "The Color Purple" as an adult.).

There is a theory that E.T.'s species are possibly Jedis or are at least Force-sensitive. As many people have already mentioned in the comments, E.T.'s species are in The Phantom Menace. E.T. is also able to heal using touch, move objects with telekinesis, influence people's actions with some type of telepathy, and when the kids were out Trick or Treating, E.T. saw somebody dressed as Yoda, he seemed to recognise Yoda.
That theory falls apart when one highlights the fact that somebody is wearing a Yoda costume, Michael does a Yoda impression, and Elliott has Star Wars toys. Unless the theory also tries to claim that George Lucas is an alien in the world of ET.
The girl Elliot kisses in the classroom is Erika Eleniak, future Playmate, Baywatch lifeguard and helps Steven Seagal secure a battleship in Under Siege.
In 1982, we all cried when that rubber puppet died. It was a perfect combination of every element needed to maximize a peak emotional response. One of the all time great tear jerkers.
I’m glad you picked up on E.T. And his species’ love/connection with plants because that goes past most reactor’s heads and it’s the reason why E.T. Came to earth anyway. E.T. And his species go planet to planet collecting plants and things like that
This movie is a childhood favorite and watching it as a kid and then later as an adult with my own kids, it just hits different. Combine the storyline with the INCREDIBLE score by John Williams, and you have a classic.
The tempting candies were supposed to be M&M's but when Mars Inc were approached for permission to use them they refused believing kids would be scared by ET. Hershey however jumped at the chance and so Reeses were chosen - and the film catapulted the product sales to record levels as a result. Turning the opportunity down is generally accepted to be one of the worst business decisions ever made.
Is it as simple as "permission" though? Seems like a case of paid product placement, where the candy company would have been paying for the advertising. Otherwise there'd be no reason to say no, worst case the movie bombs, but they'd have no reason to care if it wasn't costing them anything.

In 1986 I went to Universal Studios in California. I was picked out of the crowd at one of the shows. I was told to look forward and keep peddling. I was on a stage with a bike and basket with a ET puppet. I did as I was told and Giant screen was behind me with a Birds Eye view of a little town. The bike even lifted in the front to show we were flying. This movie holds so much of a core memory ❤
This is my favorite Spielberg movie! I remember being lucky enough to see the re-release in theaters in 2002 I was six going on seven years old at the time and that was honestly the first time I’ve ever been so mesmerized about a movie! Everything about watching this in the theatre was so amazing! I’m glad you guys finally experienced this masterpiece!!
Hammerhead was actually the name given on the toy. This came out before any real depth was given to the SW universe, and Kenner had a huge latitude in naming the aliens and such.
In 1977 I was 10 years old and Star Wars came out. I had never seen such a phenomenon when it came to a movie. I was wrong. Five years later, ET fever blew it away.
I still chuckle at the scientist in full astronaut gear coming through the curtain with it's arms out like Frankenstein's monster. Okay Steven, got it. :P E.T. holds Earth for ransom for . . . . . A million Reese's Pieces.
One of the very few PG films of the 1980s that actually still holds up extremely well today. Now you should watch the XFinity commercial with ET and Elliot (role reprised by Henry Thomas) reuniting for Christmas! Such a good commercial!

This movie hits different if you saw it as a kid in the 80s. 80s was the BEST. Simpler and Super fun times. E.T. may seem like a stupid kiddie alien movie to some. But E.T. is ICONIC. E.T. merchandise was EVERYWHERE. EVERYBODY cried to ET at least once. Kids annnd Adults....
Its always made me laugh that the only people who live in that house is the mom and three young children. Yet when the mom gets home and finds empty beer cans around the house, she doesnt question it for a second haha
I don't think I've watched this since I was little because I just remember it making me cry so much. Wow, the medical scenes are way more intense than I remember.
Ngl that opening scene and elliot meeting ET both times by himself are pretty goddamn scary. Mainly cause of the noises ET makes but also how jarring tbe camera work is showing how frantic a kid's reaction would be
Drew Barrymore was 7 when they filmed this and Steven Spielberg saw how she reacted to “e.t” the prop and decided to not ruin the illusion for her. When between takes or on breaks the puppeteers would not “kill” e.t in the creepy way a muppet dies when the hands come out. She knew e.t. was not “real” but also he was totally her actual friend - which adds so much to her performance.
The Ithorian action figure was named "Hammerhead" on the package. I never heard the word "Ithorian" until years later. Ponda Baba was "Walrus Man." The Snivvian was "Snaggletooth."
This whole movie is basically told from the kids' point of view. The few scenes where we see things the kids didn't see, we don't hear meaningful conversation, we just get vague imagery like the guy with the dangling keys, which is kind of the way a child would see him (if they were there). As an adult with an appreciation of childhood, this is a great movie. As a little kid in 1982, it was a bit traumatizing. Watching ET get found in a ditch, go pale and slowly die was rough at that age.
I watched this in the theater when it first came out, the opening weekend if I recall. I remember people in the theater crying. The dying scene caused so much sadness. The “ I’ll be right here” broke me.
Your comment about the music at the end climax scene and how in sync it is to the action is spot on! The story is, when John Williams was recording the music for the bike chase scene with the orchestra, he was having trouble matching the musical cues with the cut of the film he was using as a reference. Spielberg decided to tell Williams to conduct the music as he wrote and felt it without using the film as a reference. Spielberg said he'd cut the film to match the music. Amazing decision by Spielberg, to let Williams do the music as he envisioned and for Spielberg to be able to adjust his process to accommodate. And I think the quality of the final product shows the wisdom in that decision. Shows what an amazing director he is!
M&M Mars turned down the offer to provide the candy for this movie. Then they turned to Hershey's. That did wonders for their Reece's Pieces candy which were brand new at the time.
In the 2002 reanimated version. They replaced the mom saying not to go as a terrorist to a hippie instead. Plus there’s a deleted scene where Elliot is on the phone with his mom and E.T. Is trying to climb into the bathtub full of water. His little feet kicking always gets me laughing

One friend showed up dressed in camo and another dressed up as President Bush (even had a tape player in his pocket playing Hail to the Chief). We were about the same age as Elliot's brother, lol

I remember joining the E.T fan club as a kid after watching it at the cinema. They sent me the ET soundtrack on vinyl, a poster, and other bits and pieces. It's now over 40 years later, and presumably I'm still a member 😂
I'll never forget standing in a mile long line waiting to see this movie. The hype was intense. Never before or after stood in line for movie like it. We did feel it was worth it once we saw it.

Tho Jaws and Close Encounters of the 3rd kind are my favorite there is truly no bad Spielberg film it is why he is in most people's top 10 directors of all time. It took forever for me to go see this at the theater at the time I was it into the new alien movies…but went with my dad and brother…and they cried…let alone everyone sobbing in the whole theater….we laughed we cried we cheered💖
I went on the ET ride in the mid to late 90s. Family vacation & we had our adopted japanese sister with. My oldest brother always teased her she looked like ET. At the end of the ride ET said all our names, then when he got to our "sister" he just said frieeeeeend! 😂
E.T. (and his species) are plant-based aliens. That’s why they came to our planet (to retrieve plants) and why they have connections with plants. It sounds confusing, but it’s all explained in the sequel novel.
To make sure the scene with the government scientists/doctors will seem realistic, Spielberg actually hired real-life doctors from LA (I think) to play those scientists/doctors! And this absolutely decimates all the actor played doctors crap we get these days!
E.T.'s species was represented in the Senate in the _Star Wars_ prequels. Hollywood usually releases at least 200 films a year. One version of E.T. was a dwarf stuntman with no legs in a suit walking on his hands. According to the novelization, E.T. was a botanist, and so was the entire ship's crew.

The original version is back! In late 2001 (for understandable reasons) the guns held by the officers were digitally replaced with walkie-talkies, and the mom’s comment on dressing for Halloween as a “terrorist” was replaced with “hippie”.
I don't know if you guys have ever seen The Neverending Story, but not only does E.T. make a backround cameo, but there's also another character in the movie that looks eerily similar to him. And if you haven't watched it and decided to either react to it or check it out in your own time, I recommend you watch the original US version and not the extended one, original version has a waaay better score!
My husband was an engineer for the ET ride for many years at Universal Studios. He was laid off around Covid. He now works for the post office. But if you can sort of remember, ETs planet is dying, that is why they needed plant life. 😊
Okay, it is the solemn duty of every fan of this film to talk about the final 15 minutes, because something happened there that NEVER happens in moviemaking. Normally, a composer will compose some themes and movements for a film, then they cut what they've drafted to fit however the director has edited the film. Steven Spielberg edited and re-edited the final fifteen minutes a number of times, but no matter how it was edited, he was never satisfied with how Williams score was fitting into the edit. So, finally, Spielberg told Williams to just take what he had composed for the final scenes and conduct the musicians as though he were conducting for a symphony concert. Spielberg took the full recorded score and edited the finale of the film around the music. Again, this NEVER happens but it's partially what makes the final scenes so great: the music begins and doesn't stop, building and building until that final note with the pounding timpani. It's almost operatic. There has arguably never been a director/composer relationship like that between Spielberg and Williams.
The scene with the boys playing Dungeons & Dragons was put into the movie because in the early 80s, the RPG was on the rise of its popularity, and according to the "Art & Arcana" (a real-life D&D history book), the game basically made its "film debut".
Love this movie. Saw it in theaters. We had a running gag with my mom, because her impression of ET was a whiny "Wan' go hooooome!!". Last Christmas I ran it for the family and my twins and I watched it with her, and the same gag got brought up, so of course she did the impressions LOL!!
I was 12 when this came out, I saw it (twice) in theaters, along with: POLTERGEIST (twice) THE DARK CRYSTAL (twice) TOOTSIE (twice) CONAN THE BARBARIAN, TRON, HALLOWEEN 3 (I've always loved that movie) BLADE RUNNER, along with two very underrated films, THE WORLD ACCORDING TO GARP and QUEST FOR FIRE. I wanted to see THE THING, but it bombed that summer. It was in one theater for two weeks and then pulled! 1982 was f'king STACKED!!!

The Hershey company didn't have an issue with it, so Spielberg went with Reese's Pieces. Sales of that candy really took off because of the movie. Some marketing manager at Mars really had egg on his face over that decision. The "penis breath" line wasn't scripted. It just called for Elliott to say something insulting. Dee Wallace laughed because she wasn't expecting it. I dissected a fetal pig in middle school science class, but it was already dead (and preserved in formaldehyde). We didn't have to kill anything. The soundtrack is the real star here. This is, in my opinion, John Williams finest creation and that's some body of work to pick from ! The whole 'Adventures on Earth' suite from the beginning of the final escape and chase leading to that final rainbow stanza is PERFECT. It never, ever fails to reduce this 50+ year old guy to tears. Wonderful work from the Maestro of Maestros and he knew it because it was one of the rare occasions where Williams actually asked Spielberg to hear what he had composed without the footage. Why ? Because he couldn't match the visuals with the score as per usual but he knew he had something special. Spielberg agreed and once he'd heard it he took the movie back and re-edited the final scene to match the score.
Masterpieces were being created that year, including Basil Poledouris' score for Conan the Barbarian.
"That's traumatizing as hell." Now imagine watching this at 8 years old. I think it might have been the first movie I ever saw in the theater. It's one of the formative images/movies of my life.

I was born in 1986, so I didn't have the joy of seeing it theatrically when it opened, but millennials I've spoken to said it scared them and I'm sure some Gen-Xers would say the same. There's some moments that may be a bit unsettling for little kids, but the film was never meant to be scary. Spielberg's other movie that came out the same month, 'Poltergeist', *that* was meant to be scary haha.

1982 was not only a great year for sci-fi films (Blade Runner, Tron, The Thing, Wrath of Khan, etc...), but also a fantastic one for movie scores: Conan the Barbarian, Rocky III, First Blood, Poltergeist, etc...
Fun fact: Contrary to the usual practice, this film was shot in chronological sequence to elicit a more intense emotional performance from the child actors.

There is a theory that E.T.'s species are possibly Jedis or are at least Force-sensitive. As many people have already mentioned in the comments, E.T.'s species are in The Phantom Menace. E.T. is also able to heal using touch, move objects with telekinesis, influence people's actions with some type of telepathy, and when the kids were out Trick or Treating, E.T. saw somebody dressed as Yoda, he seemed to recognise Yoda.
That theory falls apart when one highlights the fact that somebody is wearing a Yoda costume, Michael does a Yoda impression, and Elliott has Star Wars toys. Unless the theory also tries to claim that George Lucas is an alien in the world of ET.
The girl Elliot kisses in the classroom is Erika Eleniak, future Playmate, Baywatch lifeguard and helps Steven Seagal secure a battleship in Under Siege.
In 1982, we all cried when that rubber puppet died. It was a perfect combination of every element needed to maximize a peak emotional response. One of the all time great tear jerkers.
I’m glad you picked up on E.T. And his species’ love/connection with plants because that goes past most reactor’s heads and it’s the reason why E.T. Came to earth anyway. E.T. And his species go planet to planet collecting plants and things like that
This movie is a childhood favorite and watching it as a kid and then later as an adult with my own kids, it just hits different. Combine the storyline with the INCREDIBLE score by John Williams, and you have a classic.

The tempting candies were supposed to be M&M's but when Mars Inc were approached for permission to use them they refused believing kids would be scared by ET. Hershey however jumped at the chance and so Reeses were chosen - and the film catapulted the product sales to record levels as a result. Turning the opportunity down is generally accepted to be one of the worst business decisions ever made.
Is it as simple as "permission" though? Seems like a case of paid product placement, where the candy company would have been paying for the advertising. Otherwise there'd be no reason to say no, worst case the movie bombs, but they'd have no reason to care if it wasn't costing them anything.

In 1986 I went to Universal Studios in California. I was picked out of the crowd at one of the shows. I was told to look forward and keep peddling. I was on a stage with a bike and basket with a ET puppet. I did as I was told and Giant screen was behind me with a Birds Eye view of a little town. The bike even lifted in the front to show we were flying. This movie holds so much of a core memory ❤
I never got to do that. But I did see Captain EO.
I used to watch this film every week when I was a kid, and I cried every time when they said goodbye to each other.
This is my favorite Spielberg movie! I remember being lucky enough to see the re-release in theaters in 2002 I was six going on seven years old at the time and that was honestly the first time I’ve ever been so mesmerized about a movie! Everything about watching this in the theatre was so amazing! I’m glad you guys finally experienced this masterpiece!!

Hammerhead was actually the name given on the toy. This came out before any real depth was given to the SW universe, and Kenner had a huge latitude in naming the aliens and such.

This movie hits different if you saw it as a kid in the 80s. 80s was the BEST. Simpler and Super fun times. E.T. may seem like a stupid kiddie alien movie to some. But E.T. is ICONIC. E.T. merchandise was EVERYWHERE. EVERYBODY cried to ET at least once. Kids annnd Adults....

Its always made me laugh that the only people who live in that house is the mom and three young children. Yet when the mom gets home and finds empty beer cans around the house, she doesnt question it for a second haha

I don't think I've watched this since I was little because I just remember it making me cry so much. Wow, the medical scenes are way more intense than I remember.

Drew Barrymore was 7 when they filmed this and Steven Spielberg saw how she reacted to “e.t” the prop and decided to not ruin the illusion for her. When between takes or on breaks the puppeteers would not “kill” e.t in the creepy way a muppet dies when the hands come out.
She knew e.t. was not “real” but also he was totally her actual friend - which adds so much to her performance.
The Ithorian action figure was named "Hammerhead" on the package. I never heard the word "Ithorian" until years later. Ponda Baba was "Walrus Man." The Snivvian was "Snaggletooth."

This whole movie is basically told from the kids' point of view. The few scenes where we see things the kids didn't see, we don't hear meaningful conversation, we just get vague imagery like the guy with the dangling keys, which is kind of the way a child would see him (if they were there).
As an adult with an appreciation of childhood, this is a great movie. As a little kid in 1982, it was a bit traumatizing. Watching ET get found in a ditch, go pale and slowly die was rough at that age.
I watched this in the theater when it first came out, the opening weekend if I recall. I remember people in the theater crying. The dying scene caused so much sadness. The “ I’ll be right here” broke me.
Your comment about the music at the end climax scene and how in sync it is to the action is spot on! The story is, when John Williams was recording the music for the bike chase scene with the orchestra, he was having trouble matching the musical cues with the cut of the film he was using as a reference. Spielberg decided to tell Williams to conduct the music as he wrote and felt it without using the film as a reference. Spielberg said he'd cut the film to match the music. Amazing decision by Spielberg, to let Williams do the music as he envisioned and for Spielberg to be able to adjust his process to accommodate. And I think the quality of the final product shows the wisdom in that decision. Shows what an amazing director he is!
7:30 Spielberg himself fooled his mom initially although his mom found out he was pulling this stunt and let him stay home from school anyway.
M&M Mars turned down the offer to provide the candy for this movie. Then they turned to Hershey's. That did wonders for their Reece's Pieces candy which were brand new at the time.
The most simultaneously heartwarming/heartbreaking line in this whole movie....

When I was very young, my older brother convinced me E.T. stood for the Extra Testicle. I was scarred for years.
The actress who plays the mom didn't mean to laugh at the dinner scene. Spielberg liked it so much that he kept it in the movie.

In the 2002 reanimated version. They replaced the mom saying not to go as a terrorist to a hippie instead. Plus there’s a deleted scene where Elliot is on the phone with his mom and E.T. Is trying to climb into the bathtub full of water. His little feet kicking always gets me laughing

I remember joining the E.T fan club as a kid after watching it at the cinema. They sent me the ET soundtrack on vinyl, a poster, and other bits and pieces. It's now over 40 years later, and presumably I'm still a member 😂

Tho Jaws and Close Encounters of the 3rd kind are my favorite there is truly no bad Spielberg film it is why he is in most people's top 10 directors of all time. It took forever for me to go see this at the theater at the time I was it into the new alien movies…but went with my dad and brother…and they cried…let alone everyone sobbing in the whole theater….we laughed we cried we cheered💖
I went on the ET ride in the mid to late 90s. Family vacation & we had our adopted japanese sister with. My oldest brother always teased her she looked like ET. At the end of the ride ET said all our names, then when he got to our "sister" he just said frieeeeeend! 😂
E.T. (and his species) are plant-based aliens. That’s why they came to our planet (to retrieve plants) and why they have connections with plants. It sounds confusing, but it’s all explained in the sequel novel.

No, it wasn't. That was "Keys" played by Peter Coyote. However, Spielberg does indeed make a cameo appearance as a silhouetted government agent.
To make sure the scene with the government scientists/doctors will seem realistic, Spielberg actually hired real-life doctors from LA (I think) to play those scientists/doctors! And this absolutely decimates all the actor played doctors crap we get these days!

There is a story also that this was originally a horror movie script, but it got turned into this and became a classic. Had it stayed original, it would likely have been long since forgotten.

originally as a kid, i thought he was eating M&Ms, but turns out they were Reeses Pieces, and Reeses used E.T. to market it. turned out a huge profit, evidently.

The original version is back! In late 2001 (for understandable reasons) the guns held by the officers were digitally replaced with walkie-talkies, and the mom’s comment on dressing for Halloween as a “terrorist” was replaced with “hippie”.
I don't know if you guys have ever seen The Neverending Story, but not only does E.T. make a backround cameo, but there's also another character in the movie that looks eerily similar to him. And if you haven't watched it and decided to either react to it or check it out in your own time, I recommend you watch the original US version and not the extended one, original version has a waaay better score!
My husband was an engineer for the ET ride for many years at Universal Studios. He was laid off around Covid. He now works for the post office. But if you can sort of remember, ETs planet is dying, that is why they needed plant life. 😊
Okay, it is the solemn duty of every fan of this film to talk about the final 15 minutes, because something happened there that NEVER happens in moviemaking. Normally, a composer will compose some themes and movements for a film, then they cut what they've drafted to fit however the director has edited the film. Steven Spielberg edited and re-edited the final fifteen minutes a number of times, but no matter how it was edited, he was never satisfied with how Williams score was fitting into the edit. So, finally, Spielberg told Williams to just take what he had composed for the final scenes and conduct the musicians as though he were conducting for a symphony concert. Spielberg took the full recorded score and edited the finale of the film around the music. Again, this NEVER happens but it's partially what makes the final scenes so great: the music begins and doesn't stop, building and building until that final note with the pounding timpani. It's almost operatic. There has arguably never been a director/composer relationship like that between Spielberg and Williams.
When you really think about it. ET is a Jedi ...or at least Force sensitive.
The scene with the boys playing Dungeons & Dragons was put into the movie because in the early 80s, the RPG was on the rise of its popularity, and according to the "Art & Arcana" (a real-life D&D history book), the game basically made its "film debut".
Love this movie. Saw it in theaters. We had a running gag with my mom, because her impression of ET was a whiny "Wan' go hooooome!!". Last Christmas I ran it for the family and my twins and I watched it with her, and the same gag got brought up, so of course she did the impressions LOL!!
I was 12 when this came out, I saw it (twice) in theaters, along with:
POLTERGEIST (twice) THE DARK CRYSTAL (twice) TOOTSIE (twice) CONAN THE BARBARIAN, TRON, HALLOWEEN 3 (I've always loved that movie) BLADE RUNNER, along with two very underrated films, THE WORLD ACCORDING TO GARP and QUEST FOR FIRE.
I wanted to see THE THING, but it bombed that summer. It was in one theater for two weeks and then pulled!

I dissected a fetal pig in middle school science class, but it was already dead (and preserved in formaldehyde). We didn't have to kill anything. I can't imagine that schools still do this, especially with kids that age.
