Christina of Sweden defied gender and religious norms to live her life in her own way. Dressing as a man, loving women and eventually giving up the throne to convert to Catholicism and live in Rome as a patron of the arts.
Music: "Pirouette" by Asher Fulero and "Baroque Coffee House" by Doug Maxwell/Media Right Productions.

"she will be clever, for she has made fools of us all" thats kind of really sweet
Alexandria it is
That's so sweet, my father would've been like "well, she looks like a man I guess. Oh well."
It's adorably humorous :D
YESSSS
Very sweet 💕
She was really out there living the weird artsy lesbian aunt dream life huh?
Baylie Crowley lololol, does sound like it
Except she was bisexual, rather than a lesbian.
@@superasper sapphic is better, bc it's hard to know whether she really liked men or not, just that she loved women.
@@sylviebrebach8371 butch sapphic for the win!!!
@@sylviebrebach8371 She most likely had a love affair with cardinal Decio Azzolino - he received a letter from the Pope, ordering him to stop visiting Christina at night, and several love letters from Azzolino to Kristina are known. There is no definitive evidence, but the implications are strong and history professor Marie-Louise Rodén who is considered an international authority on Christina is convinced, at least.
Christina was truly way ahead of her time not because her sexual orientation but because of her open mindedness. She was one of a kind!
@Lilah Helmer They said specifically NOT because her sexuality but because of her open mindedness
@@MikuHatsune12 her Open mindedness ideas STILL existed before her, nothing new under the sun.
@@justicewhite4739 i dont get this comment, did i argue against that?
@@justicewhite4739 you do understand is time where women speaking their thoughts out loud was consider outrageous and your diminishing the comment by simply brushing off that either sexuality or open mindedness existed waaay before her. Do you still not get that it makes her remarkable cause she was an open minded woman, queen, cultured, ahead of her time and it’s impressive as it is. Even more, as a queen or royal itself, you have to behave in certain way. You have a weight on your shoulder, and she still chose to be herself and stand up for her thoughts. Remarkable indeed, whether you can’t recognize it the right way or not.
She’s the reason Sweden lost her empire
The sad thing about Christina of Sweden is that she clearly had a lot of unrealized misogyny as she saw females and femininity as "less than" men and masculinity. Unfortunately there was not a lot of discussion at the time about this topic, and the inherit, unequal differences between the sexes was a given, not really an argument. I feel bad that she saw women as weak and vapid, and that to be a man meant that she was "better". She was a very cool woman, but unfortunately that misogyny was inevitably going to be a part of her life because there was no conversation around it....at least not mainstream enough that she would have ever questioned her convictions. Maybe she would not have been such a "tomboy" if she (and society) had respected women and feminine traits as much as men and masculine traits. Thank you for posting about her, she really has an interesting history.
@Cynthia Murphy
Well Cynthia, that's mysoginyst. Sorry. I hope that you can change your mind one day.
Elizabeth, I agree with you! Unfortunately, that was the mindset of the time.
I was thinking about that and perhaps most of her disdain towards women came from how they were treated and had to live back then. She was literally educated as a prince and maybe seeing the other women not sharing the same knowledge as she created that vision. I wonder what she'd think of modern women, who share education similar to men, she wore male clothes because it was more practical, maybe if she saw how easy a girl today can put a flowery dress she wouldn't be so masculine.
But that's just me wondering, time-travel still out of the table.
@@mellamanelizabeth8317 you're replying to yourself?
I don’t like women because every interaction Ive ever had with women was seething with double meaning. I like women who are straightforward, don’t hold grudges, and can actually handle themselves. Where im from 99.9% of the women are 1. On drugs 2. Two faced 3. Social climbers 4. Your typical catty mean girl and most of the time it’s all 4.
I was raised with boys, I was the only granddaughter for 26 years(my uncle and his wife finally just had a little girl this year!) , I don’t know how to be around or deal with women so I just stay away from them. Call it misogyny if you want to 🤷🏻♀️ I don’t really care lol.
So she was the og “I’m not like other girls”
I'm loving the queens of Europe series that you're doing at the moment! Really appreciate it during isolation❤❤❤
A
I am loving them too😊❤️
Christina is one of my favorite historical figures of all-time, and definitely my favorite royal to ever walk the earth. I was always fascinated with her as a child, and that definitely made sense later on when I realized I was a lesbian too. She's real tangible proof that we've always been around, even in the highest reaches of society. It's crazy to me that, even with hundreds of years between us, lesbians still have very similar internal experiences and struggles today regarding gender expression and the societal expectation for women to marry men and center our lives around them.
Charlie Quartz Christina is one of my all time favorite historical figures as well!!., if you haven’t seen the movie based on her reign you should check it out, it’s on Netflix &I believe they may have spelled her name with a “K” in the title. Also, *TY* for Not saying she’s “Not like other girls”!!!👏🏽👏🏽 What tf is that even supposed to mean anyhow?!?.. if I 👀/read that 1 more time I’m gonna 🤢🤮🤢‼️
@Woiller- Relic you sound upset. please continue crying about it.
@Woiller- Relic does anyone else hear a crying infant?
Eh i prefer margretha and elenor of auqataine
Charlie Quartz, I think it’s awesome that she had the guts to be herself in that time.
She was a liberal who showed respect for all faiths, before it was popular.
Lindsay holiday you are like my best friend you have a very nice voice it is just like a teacher reading books to you.
Thank you so much for making this. Queen Christina has been my favorite female monarch since I studied her in college. When I had to do a presentation about her for one of my courses, I did it while dressed in a man's 3-piece suit as tribute to her 😎
Oooh, that must have been fire!!! :D I love wearing menswear. One of my favorite pieces I have, is a very retro wool mens blazer, it even has the elbow patches on it. Very fitted in the waist. I wore it to class with a black turtle neck, black skinny pleated trousers and brown flats.
You couldn't tell me nothing, I knew I looked good! I love mixing the feminine with the masculine.
@@Indiegirl007 yep. I wish more masculine, practical clothes were made for women. It's almost impossible to find.
Did you know that Christina turning to Catholic was maybe the biggest scandal in history. (According to some historians.) Why?
Well her father was the Gustavus Adolphus, "the Lion of the North", the number one champion and hero of the Protestant world. He was a devout Lutheran.
So Christina's turning to Catholic was a MASSIVE propaganda victory to the Catholic Church.
To give you an idea how big the scandal was back then, imagine if George W. Bush's daughter had went to Afganistan, turned to Muslim, and married Osama in Laden. Even that example wouldn't have as big scandal as Christina's.
Who exactly is/was
George W. Bush's Daughter??
like what's her name??
@@monabohamad2242 I don't know... but that was the example my history teacher gave us.

It’s kind of up in the air on whether she was a lesbian or not because such effusive letters were common in that time period, especially from educated women. I think she wanted to be the next virgin queen like Elizabeth I. She read a biography on Elizabeth and was struck by Elizabeth’s perpetual virginity and was impressed by the Catholic religion and celibacy at the age of 9.
Look at her, living her life like a BOSS!
With the money of her people that she did nothing to help. Yup, a real boss.
At least she has the guts to stand for what she believes in, unlike most other royalties.
@sisu mies “she was a fool” what? She was said to be extremely intelligent and was a patron of the arts and sciences did you even read her history lol
I have always been fascinated by Queen Christine. She’s a fascinating person.
You should do Catherin the great. She wasn't even Russian but managed to become one of the greatest Czars in history.
She wasn't the greatest.

Who is your favorite queen in history?
History and Headlines Maria Antonia/Marie Antoinette, Elizabeth 1 of England, Anne Boleyn, and this one Christina.

Queen Victoria
Marie of hesse-kassel
A queen in the literal sense and the figurative sense, what a legend.
*I’m not like the other ladies in the court.*
One of my favourite Monarchs. The movie "The girl king" is about her. Good movie. Thank you.
Not so difficult to 'live by your own rules', when the peasants are paying for all your luxuries, arts and wars.
But wasn't that true of all royals?
@@roxyshow123 yes, and..? she spend a ton of public money on Art, refused to marry, changed her religion and said 'don't be nasty to other religions'. Woop Dee Do, what a saint. She was rebellious and interesting for the time, but in the end, with her vast resources, everything she did was for her own interests. You could make an argument that other Royal women actually did their duty even when that meant marrying people they didn't like and having babies. Just saying...🤓👍
@@JohnDoe-tx8lq She, for the most part helped her country, did not hurt it.
Anyway, Sweden is no longer a true monarchy. Socialist democracy now.
@@roxyshow123 "for the most part"?? You think she spent most of her resources and time helping her country? She was unliked by her own people because of her wasteful spending, she abandoned the Monarchy, abandoning her Country to live in Rome taking all her valuable possessions, bought with public money, with her 09:29 yer, very generous, thank you Oh So Gracious Majesty.
@@roxyshow123 Entitlement has many facets. Assuming that since she was cut-off of the Swedish treasury, it's only sensible that French troops will kill (and rape and loot) and be killed, to make her a queen of an Italian city says pretty much everything about her worldview.
I have been binging your videos this entire ‘break”
Thank you for the new content while we're on lock down!
I love your content. Can you also please, please make a video about Julie d'Aubigny. Her wiki info is super wild and interesting! I really want to know more about her life and story. Thank you!
I have some mixed feelings about Queen Christina. As a person, she certainly is very admirable and highly interesting, a great early LGBTQ role model. On the other hand, her abdication and the handing over of the throne to her cousin Charles X Gustav paved the way for him to steal all of East Denmark - including my home province of Scania - leading to a lot of death, suffering and oppression here. If she had decided to stay on the throne, Scandinavia might have looked very different today.
To be fair, how could she know he'd go on do something like like that? Besides, she's not responsible for his actions, so blame him not her.
So you rather speaking Danish than being a Swede? 🤣
Are you from Denmark where Princess Mary lives?
@@genera1013 She put him on the throne though, so yes, she's just as responsible.
You know how some people find an old painting that looks exactly like them? That's her with me. We have the same eyes, nose, hair, and double chin

being butch lesbians before people knew what butch lesbians were
I think it wasn't people accepting her as an 'intersex' but they were raised her as a prince, crowned her as a king, and thought she was a boy at birth. It was the environment who 'pushed' her to be a male heir they never had
Christina: "I need funds"
France: "uh yeah just go take Naples"
I honestly like her. She was a lesbian in a time that it was ashamed. And yet none shows how we treated lgbt people before, what? 1980’s?
A Queen without a realm, a Christian without faith, and a woman without shame.
She is a vibe!
Please do a video on Anna Comnena
Very much enjoyed! Thank you!
I love that you mentioned PCOS and didn’t make it seem like she was genuinely a man. Women with PCOS can be masculine and still be women
From the research I’ve done I think she probably had a combination of PCOS and CAH. Plus she definitely had type 2 diabetes and was also missing a lot of permanent teeth since very young adulthood, and both PCOS and premature loss of permanent teeth are linked with type 2 diabetes.
You should do a video on two of the queens of Naples who were called Joan -they were reigning queens not just consorts -both had very interesting lives. They belonged to the Anjou royal line originally French.Queen Christina of Sweden ruined her reputation when she had her Italian follower Monaldeschi killed in front of her -it happened in the vast Fontainbleu palace where she was staying while visiting France with her retinue.
Great story, I love her, a movie of her life would be a fabulous watch, but who would play such a dynamic role!!?
There is already a movie "the girl king"
Aww, what a liberating queen presaging the overwhelming tolerance for which Sweden is known now. We stan 🤩 👑
Hey! This is great! Its fun nowadays that society accepts tomboys and likes them! Christinia would’ve fit into this era! Christina's connection to reality seems a bit tenuous, but I guess that is a sort of freedom.

Everything about her is so mesmerizing

She was not Queen Kristina though she was crowned king. In fact except for a Danish queen under the kalmar union and a few Regencys and Ulrica Eleonora who abdicated for her husband after a year, sweden has never technically had a queen. That makes her story even greater and should be emphasised. Our first real Queen will be Queen Viktoria when our current monark dies or abdicates.
