Over multiple playthroughs I learned how to navigate in the Serpent's Grotto. The key thing is marking each od the single room exits with glowing berries so you are able to backtrack your way back by following the shades of the berries placed back to the berry bushes. I even use the colorful stones (take a full inventory of these before you enter the grotto) to mark the special rooms - gold, moon, emerald and the way to lava pool.

Have you ever played or seen a game as a child that you have almost no memory of? You can't remember the name, the plot, the music, the characters; you just remember that a game exists but literally nothing about it? That was this game for me. Every time I thought about it I would spend an hour or two thinking in the back of my head, trying to remember what it was. Thank you for finally solving this 2 decade long mystery for me Scarfhulu. I can sleep peacefully tonight.

I used to have one of those too, well it was a series of games actually, but every time I would describe it to someone it would just sound like ramblings of a madman. Then about a year ago we were talking about childhood games at university and ended in to this subject. As soon as I mentioned few key details about the series, an underclassman was like "Oh, you mean Bellini's bikinis." and I was released from my torment that had lasted for over a decade.

The fact that Joseph Kucan voices Brandon amuses me greatly -considering he also plays the role of Kane in Westwood's "Command and Conquer" series. Night and day inasfar as roles go.

I wish I knew about this trilogy of games back when. The ads and cover art showed the super-creepy looking jester looking down from a tree, which just totally turned me off. If I had seen screenshots, I think I would have instantly wanted to play it.

Oh the fireberry caves! We wrote out the map and marked rooms with berries with a B, and marked death rooms with a big X, I remember my brother and I making the map together when we were playing and stashing it in the instruction book for future play throughs. Not nearly as bad as getting through the mines in Return to Zork with the code words in the dwarves' conversation... that was so awful! We didn't think it was that weird back then to draw out the map. It's just what you did like write down your save code grids from Megaman. This was our favorite point and click series growing up.

Dear Scarfulhu, I really love when you cover adventure games like this one. Titles I've never heard of that are just so fun and whimsical, it's really up your alley. It's a big part of why I loved your Dragonsphere video too. On Twitter you asked us what our favorite video of yours this year was, and I think I have to change my answer to this one. Easily one of the best videos you've done. Keep up the good work, my friend.

Played this game religiously as a child. As far as Adventure games goes, this game had a level of polish that most didn't. Westwood Studios was such a fun company, they made Kyrandia, Nox, and C&C. RIP Westwood Studios.

Hahahahahaha the Eric Andre reference ♥ Yeah the graphics were stunning when we got this in the early 90s. We would constantly start new games to look at the intro again and check out that depth of field effect. Though its randomness in puzzles made it kind of off putting, I loved playing it, and loved mapping out the Grotto with my brother and dad as a kid, strangely enough. Also, I think Frank Klepacki was a teenager when he wrote all the music for Kyrandia, which is baffling imo.

Well, watching Books 1 and 2 in the wrong order, but dang, I've got that point n click itch again this month.
My mum was expecting to go into surgery for her hand, and needed a bunch of single hand game recommendations while she recovers. And being a huge Oddworld and Machinarium fan, point n clicks are heavy on the list. Definitely adding this one.

I absolutely love the Legend of Kyrandia series (the first being my favorite - I found Brandon's dialogue throughout the game to be so great!), although I feel like Legend of Kyrandia 2 was better designed (no mazes! Less random!) but Legend of Kyrandia 3... and the Cat Island is... a nightmare! I recently finished all three (long play and commentary) on my channel.

Woah woah woah. Follow a walkthrough for the fireberry maze? What are you saying?! Suffering through that goddamn maze, way back in the day without the availability of online walkthroughs, was an important part of my childhood. Everyone should be forced to meddle through it too, I say! Also, this was a good game. The second in the series, Hand of Fate, is a GREAT game.

    • @Scarfulhu
      @Scarfulhu  7 років тому +1

Yeah, I suffered through it too. But what I'm saying is I don't think everyone has the patience these days to properly enjoy it as they might have done when the game came out. It could tarnish someone's opinion of the game if they didn't play it back in the day. Y'know?

This is an adventure gaming classic, and I've always felt that it was a bit overrated, as many design choices can be rather annoying. But yeah, the maze is the worst part BY FAR. I also find the voice acting in the CD version really underwhelming. However, the sequel is terribly underrated, and I think deserves to be recognized as one of the BEST adventure games ever. Apart from a couple of annoying bits near the end, Hand of Fate is stellar, and also features one of the best female protagonists in gaming. Quality of voice acting was also greatly improved.

Kyrandia 1 & 2 was always THE adventure games for me. It's basically my childhood (partially because it had russian transtations unlike many other games in that genre at the time.. 10y old me was not good with foreign languages).
Kyrandia 2 is probably my fav adventure game of all time. It had some really clever things going on with it's potion brewing system and Zanthia is a sweetheart.

Couldn't agree more with you about the labyrinth though. I remember in 92 when I first played it as a wee child I couldn't get past it and quit. I only finished the game years later.
I hope you will get around to the anomaly that is Malcolm's Revenge. It has the material to make a really fun review out of. So much so in fact that it'll be hard to pack it all in there. Maybe a 2 parter?

I used to mark the safe cavern entrances with the berry, so when placing berries: I put one berry on the entrance I came from and one berry to the entrance I will go through. When I have the last lit berry, I will live it at the entrance and backtrack. That way I will know which doorways are safe to travel and which not if I don't have berries.
