Any new driver today: I’d like to thank the security at Talladega Superspeedway and my race team for building a beautiful car and my many sponsors and the people who got me here blah blah blah.... no personality in the drivers today it’s like watching robots drive the cars. It’s tough for me to be a fan of any one driver today cause your either cheering for the number on the door, the team he’s on, the brand of car, or the family name.

@@janetfromanotherplanet1301 honestly blame PC culture for that. Drivers are afraid to speak their mind for fear of getting fined or blacklisted or boycotted or whatever. Chase Elliott is finally opening up a little bit, but other than him it's mostly the older drivers that have a whole career to speak on their behalf. These new guess don't have stats and history to fall back on to show who they are, if they say something people don't like it becomes social media fodder
like he said, u wanted emotion. its what brought them to the stands. if they dont care, they dont show up, buy shirts etc. sport dries up.

By nature Dale is shy, but he can turn it on for the press or to answer a question and you can tell from racing and his life, he is patient!
Jr needs a few beers in him
When Jeff first really came on the scene I got to go to a meet n greet with him due to my dad being sent by DuPont because he’s a automotive painter ( I was born in 91 and had to be 4-5 years old at the time) he was giving out a signed picture of his car, I was in line with just my cousin at the time and my cousin ended up just taking my signed picture. Ended up going back to my dad balling about it so he got back in line with me.
When we got back up there Jeff recognized me and mentioned I was in line before but noticed I was upset. My pops told him what happened and just said sorry and maybe see if we could get another signed pic. Instead Jeff picked me up and took a pic with me, mind you the staff was pretty upset with him saying no special pics, he didn't care and I still have the picture.
Wish I could get a chance to meet him again and bring the pic to tell him the story. Tells you what kind of guy he truly was, because he was very young at the time too and had the world at his hands. I always appreciated that

My dad does collision repair and we had one of Jeff's cars on display for a weekend in 97 if I remember right for a Dupont promotion. We got tickets to the Vegas race, pit passes etc. They started the car in the paint booth and it was vibrating dust off the top.

Dale's old Bud 8 car looked so beautiful. No way you could miss that car back then. Now these days, you can't even tell who is who anymore.
Jordan I miss old NASCAR
My sister a month or two ago found a Christmas gift that I got back in 2001 or 2002 which was a diecast of Dale's All-Star game car I believe he won the 2001 Pepsi 400 driving. Considering I grew up loving baseball and being a NASCAR fan during it's heyday in the 90s and 2000s when I was growing up, I always thought that was my favorite livery on a NASCAR. But as for normal paint schemes, you're right that Jr.'s #8 Budweiser car was one of the truly memorable cars of that generation.
Best livery on a stock car the old 43 is probably older folks top but that bright red car looked good from every angle. The white and red version for Daytona was really cool. Also Gordon ran an a&m car at Texas in 14 or 15 that is always been a top for me obviously

Growing up I always loved Chad Littles John Deere car and Petty's Mello Yellow car. The bright neon on the black just popped
36 cup restrictor plate wins between these 2 (including shootouts and duels). Amazing.

I like Jeff Burton, but his energy is really similar to Dale Jr, I think the contrast between Gordon and Dale Jr would make for a better show

He's older now he's had time to reflect and grow up and mature and he's one of the greatest of all time and he's humble these days. And that's awesome.
I was never a fan of Gordon when he was driving but yeah I noticed he seems to have chilled out a lot over the years.
As fans it's so easy for us to think these "superstars" aren't like the rest of us. In reality, they are not much different, just much bigger bank accounts.

A lot of athletes want to retire but have a hard time letting go, such a big part of their life. I have to say, Jeff Gordon is one of the few that seems happy, I think he has no regrets what so ever about retiring.
Especially when he accomplished so much. Probably made it easier for him.
He shouldn't the dude define what it means to be great in the Modern Era
Alot of athletes are not 5 time champions but he dose seem happy
I think the biggest thing that helped him through retirement; he literally had a chance to win a championship in his final year. He wasn't retiring because he wasn't running good and winning races, he wasn't retiring because someone else was signing a contract..... He was doing it on his own terms. And just about went out on top.
Never was a 24 fan when he was racing. Always RCR, DEI and the 88 w HMS in this family. However, my home track is Sonoma and the 24 always tore this place up. Good man, great ambassador for the sport and one of the best I’ve ever had the pleasure to watch behind the wheel. Sunday’s just aren’t the same without these guys.

I love both of these drivers. I'm glad I got to grow up watching these guys on TV and playing them on the NASCAR video games. Truely made the sport what it means to me today.
The 90s was the most amazing decade of the sport. Drivers handled business as they saw fit and didn’t get fines and penalties. Racing was racing!

I was at that race in Talladega. What they may not know is that the old scoreboard changed first place from the 24 to the 8 when that last caution came out, and the crowd went crazy. A couple of minutes later it changed back to the 24 in first place. And that’s when chaos ensued. Lol

Jeff and Jr were always my favorites.. I remember that 2004 Talladega race, great race! I always thought Jr and Gordon had alot of similarities and never really saw them as clashing rivals, i think there was a time when Earnhardt Sr fans were trying to recreate the Earnhardt Sr/ Gordon rivalry through Dale Junior all over again.. Even before they were teammates i always thought of Jr and Gordon as friends with similar personalities although they came from different backgrounds.. I never really bought into the post 90's Earnhardt Jr/ Gordon rivalry crap bc i knew that had more to do with ppl's emotions about Dale Sr. than it did Dale Jr or anybody else.. I respect the hell out of Dale Jr for being his own person
I was at the 2004 Aaron’s 499 at Talladega with my wife. As soon as the phrase, “Jeff Gordon WINS the Aaron’s 499!” I grabbed my wife and said, “We gotta GO!” When she asked why, I replied, “Because this crowd is going to explode!” The last time I looked back, Gordon's car was coming through the tri-oval, getting pelted with beer bottles and a cooler flew over the catch fence.

I know what you mean, but I'm hopeful for the future. We are in a transitional period where Kevin Harvick is now the oldest guy out there... All these up and comers will start to develop rivalries as the time passes. I think we'll be ok.
I think NASCAR really needs to re-evaluate ticket pricing. Charge like 50.00 bucks for a 3 day adult ticket, and get that Blue Collar fanbase back out to the track. I think there is another reason too...
I live in Canada, we used to get Indy Vancouver tix every year. We would go Friday and Saturday to soak it all in, and then give them away for the Sunday so we could watch coverage on TV. I think that as the coverage improves, people just want to sit at home with a case of beer and absorb it all. Radio chatter, in car cameras, Dale Jr yelling "SLIDE JOB"... We feel closer than ever to the experience we are now getting from TV I think.

T R I’m used to the names of the newer guys but it’s still weird that only a few from when I was a kid are still there. Johnson, Harvick, Kurt Busch and now it’s going to be down to two. I enjoy the racing still but It feels different

I never got the chance to see Gordon race growing up, because we never had a track near us and my parents never had the financial ability to get tickets to a race. As soon as Jr. got hurt, my first thought was "WHAT IF THEY GOT JEFF TO FILL IN FOR HIM" and told my father this. As soon as the news came out a day or two later, he had me look up tickets, and we bought them and made the road trip to Indianapolis. He didn't care about the cost, he made it work so I could see my childhood hero race at least once. So for my first NASCAR race, I got to see Jeff Gordon *AND* Chase Elliott (my favorite now that Jeff is retired) race together, not to mention Tony Stewart's last Indianapolis race. Definitely one of the best experiences of my life

Man, I truly love these “behind the scene” interactions and conversations. And it makes you realize how special each other is to be able to be in their presence!
To this day I remember that race in 04. Made my blood boil. To me the slate was wiped clean when Jeff pushed Jr. to that 500 victory in 2014.
My favorite driver of all time is Dale Jr.
But I do love Jeff Gordon, Jeff Burton, Ward Burton, Kevin Harvick, Mark Martin and all the drivers I remember from 1999-2005.
Now my only favorites left are Matt Kenseth and Kevin Harvick. Which congrats to Harvick and I hope he wins another championship.
Would watch another episode with Jeff at the fancy studio table in a heartbeat.

last thing people like to say Jr. only got that popular because of his fathers passing... No... Go on youtube right now & watch him dominate the Busch series in 98 & 99 for two titles mainly competing against Matt Kenseth which was fun to watch if u like watching old races. But he was popular as a Busch driver... His 2000 rookie season when he won Texas I was there as I live in Forth Worth & im only about 45 minutes away from Denton which is where TMS is located. The Crowd was going nuts for Jr. that race. Being that it was in Texas that crowd was loyal to Terry & Bobby Labonte who are from Corpus Christi Texas... Yet when Jr. was dominating he by far got the loudest cheers... I still remember it to this day... I remember he also won a Richmond then the next week was the 2000 Winston All Star Race. He won that then qualified for the pole there & broke a new track record there... At that time Jr. was becoming the face of Nascar... Over Tony Stewart, Gordon, his dad, etc... The Fans loved Jr. from the start is all im saying...
Yeah, you're right he was dominating the Busch series. I remember one race he led EVERY lap! Alot of people did jump on his bandwagon after Dale died, you can see by your comment you're not one of those guys. Jr. was a great driver in his own right, I believe his name played a part in his popularity, but that doesn't take anything away from his abilities. I also think Jr. gets unfairly compared to Dale, and truth of the matter NOBODY will ever fill those shoes. I wasn't a huge Jr. fan, but I never disliked him. I always kinda pulled for him because I was a fan of his dad's. I stuck with the car and became a Harvick fan, the fact that Dale wanted him, I felt was the right move. I never liked Gordon til the very end of his career, he went from the young gun to the last of the old school.

So seeing him win his 1st Busch series win at Texas then his first Winston cup win there as well basically won me over. I always said like you mention as well that Jr. faced more pressure to win than probably any driver ever! I still remember when he would go to certain tracks where he would have success there but then they would mention how many races his dad won there... Its like he could've won a couple championships & he still would've never lived up to what his Dad did in the eyes of many fans... Its like his couple wins at Richmond, well you're dad won here this many times... Or when he won 4 straight races at Talledega to break Buddy Bakers record... Its like great but you're Dad won Talladega 9 times!
To me he lost a lot when it comes to Nascar. Im sure he made millions & is currently making millions more doing commentary & great for him. But he lost his dad, he lost his fathers company DEI because Teresa is a stupid bitch! Like when he went to Hendrick everyone thought he would win a lot cause he was with a good team & there was now no excuses for him not to win. Yet how much was Jeff Gordon winning at that time when Jimmie Johnson was racking up titles? Neither Gordon & Jr. won that much when u have a Jimmie Johnson on the team. I dont care how good a race team is you usually dont have 3 cars capable of winning that race let alone 2! So obviously Hendricks best car was going to Jimmie! Their 2nd best car was most likely going to Gordon! So Jr. was getting their 3rd best car in my opinion...
I think what made fans disappointed was his lack of success at Hendrick. He also says it was that concussion that ended his career early... To me he just wanted to be done with Racing. The stress & pressure of it... To me Jr. was done with Racing when DEI started going downhill. Yet he still raced for another decade....
I hate it when people attribute dale jr popularity to Sr as well, Dale Jr was WAY more popular than Sr. As many people hated Sr as loved him if not more , Jr was never that way, everyone liked him. Dale Jr is more comparable to Mark Martin in my eyes than his dad, Just a super nice guy that noones ever had a grudge against and has never given anyone a reason to hate him on the track. always the courteous guy that didnt make any enemy, maybe one of the reason why he was never as successful as his dad .

Jeff is right. Looking back as one of those fans that hated him when I was a teenager I now realize it wasn't really based on anything concrete.

I know how you feel. I still remember when and where I was when Mike said those horrible words when Ironhead passed.
July, 2001, Jeff Gordon didn't have many fans there at DIS. Almost everybody wanted Dale Jr to win and he did it. Not many dry eyes there that night. I worked at DIS 1996-2006 as part of the security/safety teams. After the finish, nothing could've stopped Chocolate Myers from getting to Dale Jr to celebrate. He was the first guy there and his tears of joy were flowing freely.
God that was a crazy race.. one of the best if all time... I was there.

If you got haters then you're probably doing something right, especially considering how polarizing Jeff Gordon was for a while in NASCAR.
Also I personally can appreciate the thought of not wanting to lose more than wanting to win. Some people are just more driven by the fear of failure than they are by the desire to succeed.
As much as I love the Earnhardts racing, Jeff has always been my guy. I still have coffee in a 24 mug. But when Junior and Jeff both ran for Hendrix, it was heaven on earth. That Johnson kid was ok too.

Dale jr., just wanted to tell you. I was a mad fan of your Dad as of yours. I cant say I wouldve been a JR fan over your Dad but that is what he would have wanted. I saw some of the proudest moments that any father caught on video that could have ever been displayed! He was so proud of you that im sorry< just passed the torch! I knew from the moment that his car came to rest at Daytona that it was not going to be alright. I went out into the garage and cried! When I came back in, my wife told me that he was going to be alright and I had to tell Her NO! This is not Dale, and this is not alright! That race was of no race I have ever seen your father race before. i watched him take the lead and so appeared go back in the pack and get Michael and bring him to the front and then come back and help you. Never have I seen that kind of selflessnous from any other driver and especially your Dad! Had complete faith in you and Michael to sort out the win and was kind of a passing of the torch at that moment.I think that GOD called him on his graciousness on that moment knowing there could be no greater! Just wanted to share this with you. I almost met him and Terry Bradshaw the night before that day. They were walking up to us when a group of reporters were coming across the track and your Dad waved to us and turned to the reporters, Was definitely fun watching him take terry around the track and then they did a victory stand on top of his car! was so cool!
You've got me crying. Dale Sr, either you loved him or loved to hate him. Either way, ALL were broken that day. I didn't hate him. Hate is a strong word. I was just always a Mark Martin fan. But, that day, I felt lost, just lost. I'm so sorry for your loss too as a #3 fan. God bless.

Jeff and Dale sr were business partners and they made a lot of money off their supposed rivalry. But Dale wasn't always liked either when he was winning a lot in the 80s and Jeff went through the same thing in the 90s. Whoever is the top guy, he will get booed because no one wants to see someone do too good. But I cheered for them both because I appreciate their skill and passion
That was an amazing race. Racing then was so much fun. Went to a race in Dover one year and it was 40ish degrees race day. We were bundled. It was a blast
I remember being furious about that race at talledega, but now I honestly really like Jeff
Its so funny to think everyone used to hate jeff and now everyone looks back at what he brought to the sport and now they love him. He deserves it though seems like a good guy and a fun guy to talk to.

I remember the joke that came out after the race they talk about at the beginning. "A cooler was thrown at Gordon from the stands. Initially thought to be an Earnhardt fan who threw it, turns out it was a Robbie Gordon fan since the cooler hit the wall first"
I'm amazed at how good of a listener Jr is. 0 ego from a man that should have a huge one. He's not thinking how to 1 up or clever come backs. He just listens and smiles. The kind of guy you hope your brother/son in law would be.
If Gordon was still racing, I would have been rooting for Gordon (since Jr retired after 2017 season) for 2018 onward.
Dale and Jeff seemed like they had a rivalry that stayed on the track. Everywhere else, they seem like they had respect for each other.

I was working security for the Budweiser suite for this race. When Jeff got the lead and the crowd went crazy. The radio blew up with calls for all security “law enforcement” to get to the stands and arrest the ones throwing stuff, that wasn’t happening. They did ban over 200 people for life that they did catch. I was told to get to the stand and help protect Jeff. The guys from Budweiser in the suite were worried that the crowd would come to the suite and I told them to not let everyone out once I left and I’d come back soon as I could, nothing happened at the suite. I have pictures of the track with all the beer and coolers etc all over the track.
The craziest moment of Jeff’s run in the 88 for me was when his seatbelt came undone on the final restart at Pocono.
I grew up a Senior fan. Jeff was always good in the 90s. Him and Senior were great together. And Jr. Awesome days.

I have a great digital photo I took from the grandstands of Jeff’s car getting hit by flying beer cans as he started doing his burnout at that 2004 Talladega race.
You guys may not have heard, but fights broke out between the fans over that finish in the stands everywhere.
The lone Jeff Gordon fan in a part of the country that still worships #3. That's when I loved NASCAR. All great drivers, can't repeat those days.
I love that, the modern day equivalent to Gordon getting the reception to winning Dega in 04 could be Busch vs Larson this past season. I’ve never heard boos as loud as that after a race.
