I just seeded an oats and alfalfa field I always just hay the oats as it makes great feed. Been a long time since we have combined small grains. With new seeding i put down 45 pounds oats and 12 lbs of alfalfa. Good luck I look forward to watching yours grow.
Field looks nice. Just finished seeding some oats with an alffafa grass mix few weeks ago. Sure does take awhile with the old drill. I use an 8300 John Deere. Oats are up hope all the rain we gave been getting don't wash fields to bad. Hope yrs comes up good.
Your on the right track with your rate with the oats for grain harvest. I shoot for 105lb or 1.2 million seeds per acre. They say you should cut them back when seeding down but I never do. For hay I use a 60-40 and 70-30 alfalfa and timothy and 5 pounds of brome grass for longer stands. We spray fungicide on the oats for quality issues and milling weights. Is a must here.
I usually put on 1.5 bu over alfalfa and just 2 bu on grain only. Around here they bag certified oats in 48lb bags, makes for easy figuring at 1.5bu per acre.
when I plant alfalfa I only plant 1bu/acre of oats and if I didn't farm pure sand I would black seed the alfalfa. If you planted less oats you wouldn't need to plant 20lbs of alfalfa. I plant 12lbs of alfalfa and it will cost me $60/acre for seed and that lots for me.
More acreage is coming available and you're interested! You know that means more field time and with your work schedule that can only mean LARGER equipment! Maybe there is a reason your neighbor loaned you that Fendt!!
Don't feel bad about wrong adjustments.. Our john deere 8200 drill does the same thing. Says one thing, and it doesn't come out the same.. So we eye ball it too. I did 18 pds per acre of Alfalfa, 7 pds per acre of Late season brome grass. and 70 pds to the acre of cereal rye.. But we only have 2, 30 acre hay fields. and 2 small 4 acre pieces that are too hard to get planter into.
My wish list; a good drill like that one. Thanks for the video. This is the forst one of yours I've seen. I'm subscribing.
What happens if you just plant straight alfalfa with no nurse crop?
Got the same drill..18 hole

Love your drill...but I am slightly biased...I own one too.
Is there much need to go to a great plains drill when it's only used for a few days in the year. Hope your alfalfa crop turns out well
why use culti-packer again after the press wheels?
Better seed to soil contact on the broadcast seeds like alfalfa and small grain grasses

Understood sir. Where are you again?
Southern Alberta And where I am is sandy and it is hard to get a good catch of hay but 2 miles away they can black seed hay.
Ben you will be ok with the wet weather you are going to have.

You want to sale me that old driller when you buy a new?
I would rather be thicker then thinner and it happens those adjustment can bit you in the bottom line.
Very correct Roger!! I'm betting we are not far off.
