    I absolutely loved this conversation Tim! Wow Pez gave some really great information on the album that I had no idea about and it made me look at things differently. I’m so glad you had him on as a guest!
    HIStory is probably my favourite Michael Jackson album because it’s definitely the most personal, it’s experimental and I feel it’s the most vulnerable. We got to see him go into other realms we haven’t seen previously. To be honest I truly feel he meant this to be his final one in a lot of ways that’s why there’s a lot of “larger than life” elements. Invincible (love that album to for different reasons) felt like something more so he did for the fans.
    Scream was the perfect lead single. It would of been a disaster putting Childhood as the first single. I don’t mind childhood but it’s a hard song to listen too tbh because I find it so sad and it’s just not meant for lead single material at all. I wish Smile was a single with a music video because I would be interested to see his ideas for this song.
    My fave songs are Stranger In Moscow, Scream, Tabloid Junkie, 2 Bad, Smile. This album is aggressive and beautiful in terms of production and lyrical content.
    It honestly is the perfect conclusion because it’s a good note to end on Off The Wall, Thriller, Bad, Dangerous and then HIStory.

    I don't even know how I can start this video when the title is already completely wrong. The album after HIStory, called Invincible, was his last great work. The amount of effort Michael Jackson put into Invincible shouldn't go unnoticed. It was a 6 year process with the aim of beating Thriller. Obviously it didn't beat Thriller by a long shot... and that's because of 2 things. Sony didn't promote the album after Michael Jackson spoke out about them. This in turn left Michael Jackson not wanting to do a tour or multiple music videos for the album, which would've made the album sell much more. And secondly, critics were too focused on the fact that he was already in his 40s and was technically considered a legacy act. They couldn't take him seriously anymore and decided to critique his new style. Except that new style easily influenced later 2000s music. "Heartbreaker" is one of the first incidences of dubstep. You Rock My World's disco and modern R&B fusion can be seen in songs like Justin Timberlake's "Rock Your Body". I can go on and on and list the other great songs on the album but this post would be much longer. Invincible is actually the most expensive album of all time. And compared to previous albums, he recorded the most songs during the Invincible sessions. It was a great effort and a great piece of work that should be recognized and not disrespected. Anyways end of rant.. If only you just said "Reviewing one of Michael Jackson's last great works"...

    Over time HIStory has become my favourite Michael Jackson album. It's his most personal album and a perfect blend of angry hard songs and some of the softest he's ever sung, like Childhood and Smile. Also it has three of his most iconic songs ever, They Don't Care About Us, Earth Song and You Are Not Alone.

    Very enjoyable listen from a fellow Australian MJ fan. This album, along with Dangerous are my personal favourites due to the vast range and subject matter, the best example of his versatility for me although I enjoy each and every album, body of work he produced in different ways. A truly intriguing, interesting, influential and irreplaceable artist. Cheers for the great listen.

    I loved this video. History is great both musically & lyrically: it's autobiographical & experimental. It's not a stupid bubblegum pop, it's an aggressive album with rock, R&B, gospel, soul, blues, electronic, industrial, dance sound. Every song tells us his story. Album is raw, full of anger, sadness, fury. It's sincere & honest.

    This album was more a personal journey. It's very experimental and less commercial and this album was anti-pop album, Because it's remains her most varied album of her career, included rap, RnB, hip-hop, rock, House, gospel, classical and jazz. ''Earth Song'' was a incredible ballad with a good message about how your treated the whole planet. Her most varied album, but also her most personal of how he lived in the last two years before the recording sessions of the album.

    This discussion of Michael Jackson by White men was uncomfortable to listen to, and it was typical. They are stuck in a weird bubble of “God” and “Christ”.. which to me as an Indian is a very weird part of the west.. like they cannot even acknowledge that Jesus Christ was a real person who lived & died just like Michael.. Jesus was a social & political activist who traveled to India to get his spiritual education. It’s so racist that some people even get offended by the evidence based suggestion that an Asian man traveled to the most advanced country in Asia to learn. The parallels between Jesus & Michael are valid but they get weird & religious about it. They keep calling Michael paranoid & delusional which is what victims of Narcissists often have to hear. Michael was a victim of Narcissists all his life.. tell me who WASN’T out to exploit & use him? He was the golden goose. Everything Michael spoke was the truth of his experience. People WERE out to get him.. it’s sad that the victim in this case was not believed & was blamed.. they wanted him to take SOME blame, ANY blame so they could comfortably dislike him. MJ’s “lifestyle” was full of wisdom & no he did nothing wrong. It’s American society that’s f*cked up. Driven by money, greed & an unhealthy obsession with sex & race. Also the fact that it was reality that MJ had a global army of people fainting over him.. no one can match his achievements & influence.. it was not a “delusion”.. it was REALITY.. why does it make some people so uncomfortable when Michael acknowledges REALITY & refuses to let the establishment ignore him? (“I had to tell ‘em I ain’t second to none”).. not like they are giving him his deserved due. Why should he be ASHAMED of platforming what he has ACTUALLY achieved?? That is his brand, his job to market it.. and he did it well. MJ NEVER claimed he was God & Jesus, he followed their path with dedication & humility with a greater purpose. John Lennon actually said the beatles were more famous than Jesus but that’s ok coz “it’s with humor” but Michael is hubristic? Racist pricks. Michael dared to assert his place in the world & I can understand that racists were upset that this man wouldn’t stay in the place they deemed appropriate for him.. they call him bitter, resentful, paranoid, narcissistic, delusional etc which is crazy.. just shows how little they know about his life. Condescending, hubristic, contemptuous, snobbish, completely ignorant & uneducated white men like the host are a real, REAL problem in the world. He needs an education outside of his bubble ASAP. He can start with Michael’s interaction with the original Australian people (“aborigines”). You cannot understand Michael’s art without understanding him, his life, his politics, worldview & mission. The wisdom is profound. White society is very Narcissistic, shallow & materialistic and will never understand a deeply spiritual empath like Michael who had a bigger purpose in life. White stupidity (“supremacy”) has destroyed the planet. When called out, they always act like victims as I’m sure this host will “Oh crazy MJ fans are abusing me”. Yeah the world has lost patience for white ignorance & stupidity. Catch up or be left behind.

      I understand what you’re saying, but I think some of the hosts, despite all being white, acknowledged the aspect of racism in the album and era of his life. But I agree that he didn’t think he was some godly figure. On another note of the video, if we look at the album from MJ’s perspective, I can see why he’s so blindly angry with the accusations and not taking responsibility. From his perspective, he is innocent but being accused of all of these disturbing things that he’d never done, and he’s seen as a pedophile by basically all of the media, and you’re humiliated and strip searched despite not doing anything wrong. If I were in his place I would feel the exact same way as he does. Anyways, i have been critical of a few of your videos but this one was amazing, I enjoyed it a lot good work :)

    I like to think if Prince and MJ were still around, they would have made up with Madonna, they were very different people, different personality types, and that’s completely okay, that’s why they didn’t get along and had bad to say of each other but if they really tried to understand each other, they would get along. Sorry for the excess comments, I just have a lot of thoughts :)

  • @anchorschmidt

    Re: Jesus
    MJ said himself that he didn't think of himself as Jesus but felt that people should embody the qualities of Jesus more. Was the Earth Song performance at the Brit awards a bit over-the-top? I agree and I liked the HIStory performances better, as well as the Wetten Dass and Brunei performances. I don't think that was the intention. MJ always morphed his on-stage persona to suit whichever song he performed and I guess this is how he wished to theatricalize Earth Song. The This is it portrayal is probably the one he nailed but unfortunately that never happened. Jarvis Cocker's act was disrespectful nonetheless but he probably immortalized himself as a footnote.
    Childhood is a great song. I believe he genuinely felt that way. He accepts that he is compensating for a lost childhood and that is true I believe, more than even MJ probably knew himself. Read "Remember the time" from his bodyguards who explain how they saw the lack of a childhood impact his behavior and actions. I agree that Sony was actually right in having MJ release Scream as theead signal. It was a hard-hitting reply to the B.S that surrounded him for years. Releasing childhood wouldn't have really gelled with a public reading anti-MJ stories for a while without him really having social media to control the narrative.
    MJ is at least self-aware enough to give us songs like "Is it scary".
    Also, as a Michael Jackson fan, I don't stand behind him "no matter what" it's because the facts have always been on his side. People made fun of fans even believing he had vitiligo until MJ basically proved it by dying. Scepticism gives a perceived intellectual higher ground but unless it's based on fact, it's just waffle really.

    • @timetotalkaustralia
      @timetotalkaustralia  2 роки тому +1

      Comes down to your definition of fact. Really loved your reply until you dismissed his victims as wafflers. I assume your definition of fact with regards to his guilt would be a guilty verdict. But even then I somehow can’t believe you would accept that verdict either. Many children have reported inappropriate interactions with Jackson dating right back to his lewd phone call with a lad in the UK. They are not all wafflers. Their stories are factual even though you choose not to believe them.

    • @anchorschmidt
      @anchorschmidt 2 роки тому +1

      @@timetotalkaustralia Woah there, assumptions much? I would have accepted a guilty verdict because those would have required cases against him that didn't fall apart like a house of cards.
      "Those stories are factual even though you choose not to believe them". Can't you see the contradiction in your own sentence? I'm guessing you knew these people well personally? I don't have to believe them because I don't believe Jackson was a time traveller. Care to tell me how Safechuck's.story is factual when he says that he was abused in the Neverland train station.from 1988 onwards when it was built in 1994 when he was taller than MJ? Or why Wade Robson said he was first abused when his family was on a trip to the grand canyon at which his own mother testified he was with them?

    • @timetotalkaustralia
      @timetotalkaustralia  2 роки тому +1

      My friend, there are inaccuracies in nearly every abuse survivor’s recollections. There are so many people who accuse Michael and his entire life, no matter how talented, was spent grooming every individual around him including his staff and wives. He was such a master of deception he barely knew himself once the meds kicked in. I love Michael regardless. But he was an abuser and never his true self with anyone at any stage. He spent a life time concealing his truth. A very fascinating and tragic soul.

    From many of your opinions I don’t get the feeling you really see Michael’s art in the way I see him and his work. To me: the music wasn't meant to present him as the main character other than symbolically. Even if the motivation and energy channelled through them was from his personal experiences like the mistreatment of him, the result was the transformation of the experiences to benefit others. They weren’t meant literally about him even if that perception itself was a medium which he used to spread his work (since it's how image driven pop culture works), but meant for others to recognise themselves. In Childhood, as throughout his life, he truly represents the exceptional child, the one he sacrificed so much of himself to protect and encourage in others. He is their voice, as he said "the voice of the accused and the attacked", in response to the media furore over TDCAU. And just as he was criticised for ”comparing” himself to MLK and Mandela in 2005, when they gave him strength to understand what was really happening to him, because he was (at the time in his part of the world) the quintessential oppressed black luminary, just as the others were in their times.
    In a way the relentless media sensationalism of slanted images has prevented us from following where the art going, instead believing the narrative about him being a self-absorbed star turned away from reality. This (which is said of many celebrities) is appealing to markets that actually feed self-absorption and celebration of ego. Michael wasn’t truly about that in my understanding and from what I got early on studying the apparently overlooked poetry collected in Dancing the Dream which mirrors many of his overarching themes in art and his feelings about life. He was a master of using images to relay his message to the world, in a pioneering way that was truly universal and timeless, but the media twisted his message (and still are trying).
    As was mentioned (and this may sound confused) in You Are Not Alone, Michael was persuaded to change the video to be of him representing the comforter, but I still dont see that. I see a lone human on a stage and recognise a lonely soul being reassured by the benevolent spirit of the music of life’
    To me, it's *almost* a bit akin to people reading a religious work and taking everything literally, although many of them were written at a pre-cartesian time and place when much about the retelling of the world was meant and understood allegorically.
    Just had to get this said, no offense meant 😅

    This was actually a nice podcast. In my opinion, "Childhood" was definitely genuine; any assertions of him making the song "Childhood" to garner some sympathy from the public after those 1st BS allegations are ridiculous. On the same album, he slams the accuser's dad on "This Time Around" & pointedly(and rightfully so) put a target on the back of Tom Sneddon(Santa Barbara DA at tme) with "D.S." How can a person have such an aggressive album, but have 1 non genuine song(as the 1 panelist believes)on there to garner sympathy from the public? Make that make sense! 🤔 As far as the Michael being gay thing, I, like y'all, don't know for sure, but I believe he WASN'T gay. Let me get this straight, a man who crafts meticulously an image of a character who purposely speaks in a higher voice than his natural voice/wears lipstick, eyeliner, mascara, foundation, etc./looking every bit effeminate as he could have a problem with being gay? 🤔 Again, make that make sense! Like I stated earlier, I believe Michael was NOT gay at all as he stated many times during his lifetime. I could go in a lot deeper with this, but I digress & will end my comment by saying I agree that his "History" album was very good!
