I spent decades metal working. As youbform metal, in your case Unistrut, the metal crystals turn columnar, which is commonly called worked hardened. Centre punch well, use a really sharp HSS drill bit and lube. On Stsinless which is very hard Cobalt bits are good. You could try them. Although Sikaflex and other industrial adhesive sealants are very strong, an awning us subject to strong wind, I would always use a mechanical fixing wherever possible. Another great video.

Right this should be interesting Mel. I did I similar awning on a VW Transporter.. on the first trip I left the awning on and drove out..
on the dual carriageway @ 50MPH out the mirror I saw the awning slip out.. so I drilled a bigger screw through the rail and fitted 2 leather straps to
The bodywork so I could tie up the awning to the roof rack.. lasted years.. PS the awning I used was a fiamma caravan store type

I thought it was the complete awning that you were fitting Mel. Those Fiamma rails are £600.
I'm looking at buying a Sheltapod awning, no rail required for that.
I assembled my pull out bed today with the help from your previous video, but I thought you only put a washer on the pull out slats, then I realised it's every slat. It works now cheers. :)

@@markemarkpsv1 Sometimes because of frames per second or just the illusion of opposite spin occurs naturally because of ( The Wagon Wheel Effect ) At the very beginning when the drill is going much slower, it appears to be spinning in the correct anti clockwise direction when looking straight at the drill.
Uni strut is very hard and those screws with drill heads are designed for lighter softer material. The drill bit he broke may have been blunt so he forced it somewhat. That's my observation and thoughts.
I recon we should open an inquiry though lol 🤣😂🤣

I’m guessing they’re probably stainless steel screws which are designed to be self tapped into a suitably sized pilot hole. Nothing to do with quality, stainless just has a low shear point.

Hi Mel, I have exactly the same awning rail on my van but I used the small stainless steel self drilling screws and fastened it to the van. Only one thing I found with this is the channel is for 8mm beading and my awning is 6mm beading. The fix is fit a drive away piece that is 8mm on one side to 6mm on other or a large pair of water pump pliers to squeeze the channel slightly. I will let you guess which option I went for. 👍😎😁

Wrong fixings for unistrut Mel,drill a pilot hole first and they might go in,you need heavy steel tek fixings to go through without a pilot, good luck.

Oh NO! If that glue works holding that awning while screaming down the free-way, I'll EAT IT! If the screws don't work, I hope you drilled enough holes so the glue penetrates the holes and goes hard, like a nail / screw.

@@BigVanSmallWorld I have to say, I'm not optimistic because of the stress that it will suffer when in use. But good luck with it, and stay safe.
