  • As we make our way through field testing the Nikon Z primes, today's review is on the Z 35mm f/1.8 S with a twist.
It's been clearly stated many times that the 35mm f/1.8 S Z lens out-performs the F mount AF-S 35mm f/1.8G by a mile, so we've put it up against the far pricier AF-S 35mm f/1.4G AND the Sigma ART 35mm f/1.4 which is supposed to be a leader in this category.
This is the comparison you didn't know you needed.
Let us know what your favourite 35mm lens is in the comments below, and enjoy some good British bucolic scenery while you're here!

Nice comparison video. Enjoyed the farm setting. I got the Z 35 f1.8 when it was on sale in March or April. It has been a great lens.

Yes, I agree. Stick to native glass. I've owned the Sigma 35mm f1.4 art, and for size and weight I found it to be the most balanced sigma lens. It was sharp and rendered beautifully. However, in low light, the autofocus was awful. Every couple of months it had to be calibrated, and after 2 years of ownership, it rattled itself apart. I lost all trust in it for paid clients. The Sigma 20 and 50mm arts also had their quality control issues too.

@@fredericchopin1667 I would like to think they've improved as image quality was never the issue. My issue is standing the test of time in professional environments and not becoming "Tantrumus" after a couple of years. The DN route makes more sense as Sigma's glass is way to heavy for prolonged use on full frame.

Thank you for a great video. I will continue to use my Nikon 35 F1.4 AIS and be happy with it. Looking at my photos from the past and choosing the best to my eyes has nothing to do with neither the camera I used to take them nor the lens I used.

A great lens comparison (with actual lenses: re your caption) thanks! These are my favourite type of video. When you do another one, could you do a brief look at corner sharpness wide open please? That will keep us landscape/Astro fans happy. James Brew rates the 35mm Z highly as an Astro lens, so I know the answer to this focal length...Thanks again.

I love the F mount 35mm F1.4 lens. I picked up a used one during a stay in Tokyo on a whim and I ended up using it for most of my time. Gorgeous rendering and colour. In a moment of weakness I let it go but I am thinking of getting another 35mm lens for my Z mount camera. This review is very helpful - thanks.

Now that Nikon’s introduced their (budget-friendly) 35mm 1.4 I would love for you guys to reenact this very helpful video! I’m really struggling between the 1.4 and 1.8 versions. I know we don’t know what/when Nikon will produce its S version of the 35 (the behemoth you predicted, Becky) but I’m thinking my own choice will be between these two. Like Becky, I rented and loved the 35mm 1.4 DSLR version, but went all in on Z mounts. Thoughts?

You two bring up good points... mainly that although the new lenses are "better", the older lenses still have the same qualities that they've always had. And... "waspital"... :)

The 35 f/2 D is amazing and tiny for regular street etc - love it. But the zeiss 35 f/2 ZF.2 is (for me) absolute king - easiest manual focus lens for nikon and the results are stupid sharp and contrasty even at f/2. It's a bit heavy though - but will last forever if you take care of it. I bought a well used one for €350 - a bit cosmetically damaged, but perfect glass inside. The Tamron 35 F/1.4 is wonderful too. Damn I'm showing my GAS... Love your out and about video's !

@@morgankarno7335 That's true, there is a bit wide open for sure, same with all manual Zeiss lenses and Nikkors for that matter. What's your favourite 35mm for Nikon ? The old Nikkor 35mm f/2 is still an amazing lens for the price, and I would never part with mine - I just wish Nikon would produce a motor driven FTZ adapter so us oldies could use our still excellent D glass on the newer bodies - part of the reason I'm still sticking with my never ending D4 and D850 bodies..

The 35 1.8 S is a great 35 and my favorite Z lens so far. The 35 1.4 G is good but a little overrated and overpriced. I had the Sigma 35 1.4 but it gave me fits whenever I used it on my D810 due to its focusing issues.

Good job both -- 35mm is a difficult focal length for me and I am sure I have a not great copy of the AF-S 35mm/1.4G.
35mm is neither an ideal lens for landscape -- for me this is 20mm +/- NOR long-enough to get close enough for what I like to achieve in portraits. That said there are many who use this focal length for full-frame portraits, which involve inclusion of the environment within which the model is placed. Little distortion, obviously wider than a standard lens, and great from low-down shooting positions.
I am hoping that as we head through to the end of the year we will see another version of the Z-mount lens road map and that this will include a raft of bright wide primes - 14, 16, 20, 35, 105, 135, 150 and so on AND more choices for Macro Shooters.
I luv the sarcasm in this week's Nikon Rumours weekly summary -- "Yes, of course, Nikon will release another new camera this year…" Peter drippingly "explains" - well we all get it wrong from time to time ..... but "multiple clickbait websites and UA-cam channels (the usual suspects) have been reporting “rumors”...... " BUT unlike Grays' channel this is all they have to report.
I was saddened to see Canon withdrawing their firmware update for the R3 -- and YES youtube reviewers there is no need your you folk to slash your wrists and cry WE'RE DOOMED like Frasier -- Canon will fix it and release another version soon.
Whether or not TN will ever lighten up on Nikon bashing is a choice. After posting another vid with a click bait title JP did a good job.
One has to say" "Dear Internet warriors - just lighten up!!" but that is probably too many characters.

    Great video as usual.
I vowed never to waste my money on third party lenses having been let down by both Tamron & Sigma in the past. Whilst great optically their long term internal build quality is way behind Nikon. I can also recommend the Voigtlander Ultron 40mm in F mount, works great on both F & Z bodies😁 & is built like a tank.

So far use the Sigma Art 24-35mm 2.0 and the Nikon 24-120mm 4G ED when I need 35mm on my Nikon’s.
The Sigma 24-35 has phenomenal sharpness and rendering while the Nikon 24-120 is very practical.
Was thinking to get a classic Zeiss Distagon T* 1,4/35, but really 35mm is not a priority, I like 24/25mm and 50mm better.

Tamron 35mm f1.4 for the win! As sharp (or sharper) than the 1.8S and nicer bokeh too. If a Tamron Z version comes out....there's the go-to perhaps.

    35mm 24mm 85mm 105mm 135mm . f mount lenses are old and Z mount 1.8 are not good enough for the price
Tamron 35mm 1.4 for F mount is best option for nikon user as of now- price wise and quality wise it is better than F mount and Z mount lenses
