Kai always seems a bit surprised when people recognise him and want to say hello and either take his picture or have one taken with him. He should realise by now that he and Lok, and Alamby of course, have become firm favourites with thousands of followers. I count myself among them. :)
Worth mentioning that the 2012 word press photo winner this year taken in Yemen was taken with a D700 and a 35 f.2. The photographer uses small primes precisely to be inconspicuous. See Samuel Aranda
AF-D lenes last forever, never break down. Its great to keep for both film and digital. The G made out of plastic and the motor inside eventually die, unlike the D with screw drive.
After shooting both on my d810 I can say there is nothing wrong with the older d.. As long as f2 is fast enough. Especially once you look at that price difference for performance difference.. Just isn't worth the extra imo, I'll keep my d copy :-)
Thanks man, even 3 years after, your advice is still useful for people like me. I just bought a Nikon D850... So, now I basicaly don't have money to buy crazy ass expensive lenses. I'll go for the f2, thanks to you and I'm sure I won't be disappointed ;) Cheers!
PowderTangJon yeah.. I realise now. I didn't realise initially the video was from 2011. I think the 35mm f/1.8G AF-S came out in 2012. The 35mm DX lens is an excellent lens and superb value for money. It was my first prime.
It's also built far better, and the 35mm f2 is $300 used, remember it's not made anymore. I recently bought a mint condition 35mm 1.4G for $800. So for $500 it's definitely worth the difference.
@@frankluo230 I highly disagree with you, but I will give you that the Sigma is sharper overall. People like you only care about and seem to know about sharpness and trust me it's not the only character of lenses that matters. The Nikon lens is plenty sharp enough, especially for the D4s and D5 I was using it on, and even my D800E. None of this matter's anymore because I have sold the Nikon and replaced with the best 35mm lens ever made. The new Tamron 35mm f1.4, which is incredibly sharp, has excellent contrast, bokeh, AF speed, AF reliability and build quality. See I just named 5 other things, besides sharpness that matter. Sigma just throws in a million elements and coatings to get around their poor optical engineering. Too many elements arranged in a bad optical formula, may result in great center sharpness....but. Thats not all that matters and many Sigma lenses have really bad autofocus reliability. I am a full time working professional photojournalist and can't have AF problems and or build quality issues. Tamron seems to have been able to check every box, with their new 40th Anniversary lens, and everyone who has bought or reviewed the lens agrees.
The reason why i watch digitalrev over any other photography channel: 1. Actual field tests 2. Good humor with lots of good knowledge 3. Kai's lovely british accent 4. They're actually entertaining 5. I love streets photography
If the side by side photos were intended to show the superiority of the $1,600 lens over the $300 lens, I'm afraid I missed the point, especially on a 12 mp D700, which is what I still shoot. Thanks for showing me that for the $1300 difference, I'm not missing out on anything that I need by using the 35mm f2 AF-D lens. I could perhaps see someone buying the AF-S 1.8 G version at $500 for use on a newer, higher resolution camera if it is any good, which I'm sure it probably is.
@OrsonMyles no,sensors dont affect DOF. The only things that will affect your bokeh are your focal length, aperture and focal distance. how good your bokeh is isnt affected by it, it will affect the overall quality of the shot vs a full frame, but thats it. The bokeh itself isn;t affected
Nice comparison! However, those lenses are far apart from each other. I have to note that the `G` designation is not a high-quality indication, as it is with Minolta/Sony G (Gold) lenses, but more of a handicap since you cannot mount G lenses on manual focus camera's and have aperture control due to the removal of the aperture ring. Before 2010 when the f1.4G came out, the f2 AF-D was the best 35mm lens of Nikon. However, the f1.4G has taken over that position.
true, i want a prime lens mainly to do the abiality to blur the crap out of the backgrounds, especially for pictures of people. my only concern is the 50mm might be to tight for indoor shots of peoeple? im prob going to do portraits shots, but seeing group shots and full body shots prob too. would the 50 suffice? the other reason i liek the 50mm was it seems better built and nicer then the 35 interms of the lens itself but of course its the photo that counts!
@OsrsonMyles @Dragon4eva from wikipedia: "If the subject distance is adjusted to provide the same field of view at the subject, at the same f-number and final-image size, the smaller format has more DOF, " So: With a 7D +100mm macro you get more DOF, then with the 5D+100mm
How about that gf3 anyway? As far as redundant micro-upgrades go... I'd actually consider it a small downgrade. It would be cool to see a review on the new Leica branded lens they'll be coming out with though.
@djazaeer yah, your question to the video is just exactly the reason this video was created for - to answer questions of people whether it is justify in paying the huge premium for the better 35mm. It is not a comparison of which is better, it's too obvious, no? The whole point of the vid is to help people that are on the fence on deciding whether to pay a lot more for the better 35 or save a lot more for the f2, and not which is better djazaeer.
@Moemay9 Wow, well googled..It affects your angle of view, not bokeh..The only difference is a crop sensor takes the centre part of the frame. You can even take your full frame, and take the shot, then crop it out and have the same effect. All you're doing is having to step back to get the same angle of view as a full frame, which is increasing your focal distance. This is what affects your DOF, not the sensor size.
I have a 24mm 1.4G but went for the 35mm f/2. Why? Because I wanted a nice small and light prime, not a boat anchor for this specific length. I may one day get the 1.4. I prefer lugging the 35 to the 24 at the moment. The 24mm however is an excellent lens as the 35mm 1.4G no doubt is.
If you have a DX camera, go for the 35mm. If you have a full-sized sensor, go for the 50mm. I own both, but I tend to use the 35mm more, except when I need maximum sharpness, then I go with the 50mm. There really is something magical about the 50mm focal length. In my opinion, ALL DX cameras should come with a 35mm 1.8G and all full-sized sensor cameras should come with a 50mm 1.4G. We would have better photographers who learn to properly frame their subjects. :)
I don't know why I should want to watch a video which wants to tell me that my AF-D produces pictures with awful bokeh. I had fun shooting with it until today and I'm going to search for fun stuff about gear somewhere else.
I do enjoy your videos, but every time you compare expensive vs cheap lenses, of course the expensive lenses are better, but not everyone can afford them. Maybe offer an inbetween priced alternative?
You know you're a huge fan if digitalrev when you're watching this again just cos youtube says a new video was 50 minutes ago despite how this videos older than that and youve seen it b4 :S
@6:22 There's a really good subject to shoot at Kai's right side. That vendor with lots of cellphone cases. Framing the the vendor guy with the window full of colorful phone cases... =)
Kai always recommends expensive lens over the budget lens. He should emphasize what is the best use of a budget lens. Nikon India video recommends a 35 mm lens for group portraits and an aperture of f/8 to have everyone in sharp focus. If so, why not buy a budget lens? I think reviewers do not understand why Nikon makes such a variety of lenses and continues to produce older lenses even after they introduced the f/1.8 and f/1.4 lenses. Kai always talks of bokeh even for wide angle lenses!!!

the f2 D is a great lens i agree. not sure what the benefits of this lens are really given the insane price

Bahaha "Bloody hell what's wrong with his jeans?" Love it.
Kai using a Nikon with a Nikon strap?!
AND he actually has it around his neck :0
Haha, agreed
Wouldn't the 35mm f/1.8G, compared to the f/2.0D, have been a more reasonable review?

seriously, let's not forget the size difference too. the 1.4 is far from discrete
