MUJI Japan carries a line of enameled steel containers with a plastic vacuum seal lid. Old and apparently new school. Oven and freezer safe, even stovetop safe. But not for use in the microwave. I’m careful not to scratch them with metal utensils.

Great video! Iv'e been trying to limit plastic in my life because I've recently learned that plastic is an endocrine disruptor.

Thanks for your suggestions. We use a local butcher, so I'm going to speak with them about bringing our own containers.

What is the brand of silicone bags that you use? Thanks for making this video! The glass, stainless steel and silicone bags are truly less wasteful and much healthier for our bodies and our environment.

7 is interesting option, although i am looking more for lunchboxes in metal as meat containers due to price and lids that clamp shut.

I have been freezing meat on a cookie sheet to get individual servings and then packaging in freezer bags. I will try the silicone ones i think or the metal pans look awesome. Great ideas!

No freezer burn with cookie sheet?

    • @cindyw4278

@@04Ammy04 no i only freeze on a sheet pan until frozen and then put into a container or a reusable silicone freezer bag which i have recently started ti use. I also sometimes wrap things in parchment paper and then a container. I am loving this method and we use way less single use freezer bags.

@@cindyw4278 So like cookie sheet (like wax paper) to wrap it up per piece, then placed into a silicone bag?

    • @cindyw4278
      @cindyw4278 3 роки тому

@@04Ammy04 i put parchment on a cookie sheet and then place the meat or chicken on it till frozen. When frozen i then bag or put in a container. I wrap it in parchment only if I use something i think might not be so air tight. Sometimes i run out of containers and need to use freezer bags. The silicone ones are awesome but expensive so i am gradually purchasing. Hope this helps.

Wow your homestead looks spectacular. I just started mason jar vacuum sealing, then I had an idea about putting fresh meat in the jars, vacuum seal and putting the jar into the freezer. Most likely no freezer burn. What do you think.

Haha, it is nothing flash I assure you, but a lot of hard work has gone in to it! I have not tried that method, but I am guessing it would work eh

Didn’t even think of those stainless pans! Edgar a great idea! You mentioned putting water or stock on top? I have never heard of that before? Sounds like it’d work great!

    • @FantailValleyHomestead

Yeah the water helps keep the frost burn away for longer. Pre-marinating and freezing in the sauce works amazing too!

Would you have to fill the mason jar completely full to avoid freezer burn? I'm wanting to do enough for one meal and it doesn't always fill a jar.

    • @FantailValleyHomestead

It is best to leave space in glass jars so it doesn't expand and shatter the jar!

New Zealand does not recycle tin foil. You can get a bigger size mason jar than what your showing, not only that you can can meat on it's own or as a stew / soup already in the jar, and it will last for years. Since Amazon changed there business format many things that ship to N.Z. cost more than the products huge price. Like the jars on your link, 42 bucks for the jars and 58 bucks for shipping,

    • @FantailValleyHomestead

Foil will naturally break back down in the soil as it is just a metal. Plastic never really does

Aluminum foil can leach Aluminum into your food, so keep that in mind if you choose to use that option!

Disappointed in this video, as several entries are really plastic. Since I freeze single servings, other options don't work for me. I use plastic sandwich bags but am concerned about extraction of plasticizer from them during freezing. Any other ideas that would work for me, please?

This is not necessarily for health but environment. And not everybody is convinced aluminum is as bad as some claim it to be. Especially consumed vs applied topically in a salt form.

    Alfoil is so bad!!
Aluminum foil is actually far worse for the environment than plastic wrap across the board - use of fossil fuels, water pollution, human health impacts, and greenhouse gas emissions. ... Aluminum foil can be reused a handful of times. But to make it better than plastic wrap, you'd have to reuse it six times
