- Caitlin Simmers is surfing’s North Star. At just 18 years of age the Pride of Oceanside has quickly grown from a lo-fi grom to the world stage’s headline act, whether she’s dropping insane video parts like Bell Jar, or claiming wins in Portugal and Brazil on her way to a fourth place finish in her rookie Championship Tour season.
The latest instalment of In Plain Sight sees Caitlin in her beloved hometown of Oceanside, San Diego, and reveals a little more about the gritty city and working class locals who have turned her into the global phenom we know and love today. We hear Caity’s thoughts on the joys of competing and travel (spoiler alert: not in that order), we hang out with her brother Timo, meet an 11-year-old Caity who’s blissfully unaware of the life she has to come, see her fall off a skateboard multiple times, and in amongst a plethora of filthy tubes and wild turns we find out if she still catches lizards now that she’s all grown up.

Caity Simmers is single-handedly making me interested in watching competitive surfing again. She is exactly what the tour used to be… free spirited, punk rock, counterculture with interesting individuals who were the furthest thing from “cookie cutter”. And I have no issue saying this… I had zero interest in the women’s tour until she started ripping it. No disrespect to the female surfers who paved the way. It’s just that the progression and balls to the wall attitude in waves of consequence never seemed to be there fully. That’s less a fault of the surfers and more the fault of not giving them the chance in holding the contests at the same break. But some of it seemed like it was a reluctance to go big. I feel like between Caitlin and Molly there isnt that hesitance now. And it’s fun to watch it happen

@@barntardanimal2479. Men contest surfing is pretty lame. As someone that comes from skating/ bmx background. The gap still between top men vs top women is large. Surfing isn’t. Men better start doing something cool, more airs, shove its, something. These top women in surfing could place top 10 easy in a contest.

I think they just underscored her to push Luana Silva in the WSL at Sunset. She clearly won the heat. I remember when she was being robbed by them before and she kept her head down and her mouth shut. Just rolled with it. I guess that's part of the WSL vetting process. Caity is way above 98% of the field. Only a few near her, and her adaptability puts her above those even. She can get it done wherever.

Love Caitlin Simmers and her fearless attack!! However, she's already running into a force of nature who is substantially more likely to win the world title this year: Molly Picklum, who is absolutely CRUSHING in these first two contests. Overall, it's very clear: the old guard is gone, and will never seriously compete for titles again. The game now belongs to these new teenagers and young 20 somethings, and they surf like no women have surfed before, IMO. Picklum's lip attack in the semi's at Sunset was absolutely nutzo, emblematic of the new school.

It’s baffling that the city of oceanside isn’t already a rich a city like Newport Beach, La Jolla, or any of the other cities.
It’s baffling because it has its own pier, own harbor, & it has its own beach. And then you have its neighboring cities like Carlsbad, leucadia, Encinitas (just to name a few) that is considered rich/a higher class & it doesn’t have a pier & a harbor.
At the same time, I like how it is. Why? You have less snooty/entitled yuppy people & less ghetto/trailer type people too. You basically have a mix breed of people & the people are real.
It’s not like San Clemente where you have guys trying to be gangsta while driving a Tesla or Mercedes.

Never had much respect for women's surfing until this Women's Pipe Pro event when Pickles and Caity took it to the next level. I fear for the rest of them as they have no chance of winning a WC while these two are surfing and fit.

Caity’s way more talented in relative terms. Sinmers is the women’s surfing equivalent of avant-garde improvisational jazz: brilliant, cutting edge, and fearless. If Eilish were a surfer she’d be at Sunset (LA) on a soft top every session.
