Caity Simmers: A Portrait of One of the World's Best Young Surfers - The Inertia

  • Caity Simmers is at the forefront of a generational movement of female surfers set to change the face of competition. Airs, barrel riding, rail work, this Oceanside, California native has it all, and a style to go with it unlike any we’ve seen in recent years on the Championship Tour. But Caity’s head is in the right place. She's being raised by two awesome parents, Ali and Jesse, and she surfs for all the right reasons. After qualifying for the CT in 2022, she turned down the opportunity to travel the world so she could just be a kid. Here's a portrait of Caity Simmers through our new series GENUP, profiling emerging talent poised to change the course of their respective sports.

    Caity Simmers is rare gem. I was watching some Groms in Oside several months (might have a year ago, and one girl was out surfing them all AND had more snap, style, and energy than anyone else in the water. It turned out to be Caity Simmers. I was raised by parents that surfed. I started at San Onofre in the 60s at 8 years old and I still enjoy warm water winter walls in Hawaii at age 65. Seeing someone as blessed in the sport has Caity is rare treat. Best of Luck in the years to come,. Make us Oside locals proud.

    I’m ngl, but I rarely watched full women’s heats before this year. Not because I didn’t find it interesting, it’s just hard to cram 9 hours of a day’s contest into an adult’s work schedule.
    I have watched all of Caity’s heats this year though. She makes me excited to see where women’s surfing is going.
    When they started the inclusion of the same peaks for men and women, that def made me watch more. Now, I’m just waiting for this generation that Caity and Sierra seem to be leading to break those big wall down… big Chopes barrels, clean and makable punts, etc… Caity is right there on that razors edge of innovation. It’s really cool to watch.
    And I thought it was ironic hearing our Olympic Champ saying “she might even be on tour with me NEXT year”!
    Or maybe winning on tour Carissa. She’s winning on tour

    Caity isn’t the other girls. Not sure why a video to highlight Caity feels compelled to sell other girls. Don’t piggy back Caity’s abilities. If Caity was on tour now she’d handily win. Her surfing is already more mature than Steph and probably on par with Riss progressively (btw Riss was robbed of a title by new woke WSL rules). That’s very obvious for any man to to see, since women tend to be blinded by gender pride now to a degree reality loses objectivity. No, the other girls don’t surf like Caity, yet. Not even close. Any objective observer can see Caity is in a league of her own. Duh.

    • @simrdownmon6431
      @simrdownmon6431 Рік тому +3

      Wow, you managed to squeeze "women tend to be blinded by gender pride now to a degree reality loses objectivity" into your comment about arguably the best up and coming female surfer in the world.
      But ya, Caity is in a league of her own

    • @mikeuptegrove
      @mikeuptegrove Рік тому

      @@simrdownmon6431 WTF are you even talking about? I’m not sure what your point is, or why you think taking my point out of context is some how a relevant, “rebuttal”; if we can even call it that.
      My guess: You think there’s some sort of irony to my comment I suppose. There actually isn’t in the way you’ve mischaracterized it. The point you try to make is what’s un-ironic. That’s the irony of your comment, but you obviously don’t see that.
      The real irony is, as I previously pointed out clearly, for those with basic cognition, that: women want to be recognized in the same way men are, whom btw ALL (men) must stand on their own as complete individuals in any acts of achievement, while women act like women are a monolith whose achievements are all one in the same. Women piggyback one another for things they haven’t earned and do not merit, and men do not and cannot; we’re (men) not even remotely allowed to lump man’s achievements together lest we are called, “toxic or sexist”.
      My point is: Women in general need to get off Caity’s back and make their own way, on their own merit, instead of thinking they can lump themselves into Caity’s success, as if all women are Caity; “Caity’s level of surfing is all women’s level of surfing by virtue of anatomy”. No, they aren’t Caity just because they share anatomy/biology. They aren’t Caity’s story, they don’t surf like Caity, and likely they haven’t put in the same time as Caity. How that fell short upon you, via my comment, and then was taken out of context like you hadn’t even a basic understanding of my point, is just bizarre.
      You see, I am a man: we give credit where credit is due. We don’t give merit by genitalia. We give merit when it has been demonstrated and deserved. I don’t think it’s perpetually appropriate to lump all women together while also pushing the message of how strong women are. Strong people, men and women, don’t need any gender’s help. They just get shit done without insecurity and feeling sorry for themselves. There is no surf film where a man’s individual part is shared with other men, with a specific mention of why men together, as a monolith, are, “great”, or are, “achieving greatness together” (as if that’s even virtuous at all). Again, men get credit ONLY for what they do, not what other men did. Caity’s part here should’ve been all hers, and not made into a chance to highlight women as a monolithic gender. Not sure why anyone with sense would be offended or off put, lest they be insecure and weak individuals.

    • @mikeuptegrove
      @mikeuptegrove Рік тому

      @@reginab9704 no one mentioned coming up. Girls, “come up”, as often as guys do. It doesn’t mean anything. The last guy that came up remotely close to Slater was Andy. Point being: lots come up, but not all have in them what Kelly has or Andy had. The only one before them was Curren. When it comes to style, they all don’t have it. Sorry. Caity has it. She’s different. That simple to see.
