  • The secret to stop burning out plasma cutter tips is very simple .If you are anything like me when I first started plasma cutting with my cheap cut 50 plasma cutter I would try and cut the thickest metal I could find just to see if it would work? But there is an art to using a plasma cutting machine you don't just want to dive in and start cutting without knowing a little about how the machine works especially the consumables because you can burn out your tips and electrodes very fast if you don't hold your plasma torch on the correct angle. My torch is a pt-31 that runs very cheap consumables but you can still be spending a lot more money than needed if you don't do it right. So if you are wanting to cut thick steel never try and blow a hole straight down through it always start on an angle or better still start by drilling a hole to start cutting from. I always drill a pilot hole first & with reference to the short clip about ill-fitting tips I tried the m4 washer thing but I ended up using a m5 brass washer instead as the plasma torch head is brass as well.

Great examples and walkthrough. 10mm is about 3/8". I have a mix with old cars/tractors and some newer stuff.

Pete, are you suggesting that people should do some research and learn the process before they fire the machine up and wreck stuff? That's asking a lot. Do that same thing with a gas ax and you'll wind up with a face full of molten metal. Pain is a great teaching tool.
