Thanks for watching friends. I can't believe it's been a year since we started the series. I added in the description box all the links to the books and videos I mentioned. I'm excited to dive into cooking with our food storage in the new year. What would you like to learn next year as well?
Thank you SO much for having this one come out SO early in December!! Amazing! I've really enjoyed this series and look forward to the next level coming in the new year! I find it funny that you are always referring us to OTHER people/channels/websites saying that they are a great place to start if you're new. I want you to know, YOU are who I refer people to when they are just starting! Especially, since you've been doing this series this past year! I appreciate that you are referring us to others out of a place of humility and to be sure we are using all available resources to us, but don't discount how valuable you are and all this amazing, practical content you've spent the time and energy to make for your community! Thank you so much and keep up the awesome work!
You also can and SHOULD freeze pecans. I say this as a southerner who uses them a lot and grew up using them. Because of their high oil content, pecans go rancid really quickly if left room temperature. An opened bag of pecans left room temperature only lasts about three months before it goes rancid. That same opened bag of pecans stored in a freezer bag with all the air squeezed out in your freezer can last 1-2 years! This is especially true for pecan bits and pieces which spoil faster than pecan halves. And they thaw really quickly so you can actually add them to your baking or cooking directly from your freezer and it won’t change a thing. I know pecans are expensive for folks who don’t live near where they’re grown in Alabama, Florida, and Georgia, so protect your investment and freeze them!
I have pecans in my freezer that have been there for over three years (or longer I can’t remember ) that I used over thanksgiving and they were still good! My aunt used to give all the nieces a coffee can full every Christmas! She’s gone now, but the pecans are not. Still good.
So true. I freeze all my nuts, and PB powder. I use a ton of walnuts when I make Baklava, and pecans for pies, and breads. Theu go bad so fast if you do not freeze. If stored properly, they will last many years in the freezer.
Excellent advice! Also, the more often you can buy nuts in the shell, esp when you're buying them not for immediate use, the better. Foods kept closer to their original state generally (with exceptions) keep longer.
Hi Kimmy, I'm a party of one, and I do have a food storage for myself. Months ago I got really sick, was in bed for 3 to 4 days, found myself looking for stuff to eat, opening all the cans of soup I had, scrimping and scraping!!! i said to myself, "this is never going to happen again" I started collecting non perishables for those rainy days, that we ever know are coming!!!(colds/sickness) Thank you for all your tips.
I highly recommend pouches of ready made food that just needs to be microwaved for a minute or 2. Lots of Indian food and rice come in those packs. They're cheaper if you buy them by the box like from Costco.
@@DB-xo6xh If you have a Food Saver you can portion out soups, stews, rice dishes, etc. Put the individual portions in the FS bag and freeze. You can freeze and when ready to heat, drop the bag into a pot of boiling water to cook.
Same kinda happened to me. I have 2 fulltime jobs as a cook,so I rarely are at home. Then the pandemic hit. No problem, I would order out,but that got expensive.
@@danniemcdonald7675 yes, that's a great idea as well, but I have blackouts in mind. If your fridge or freezer go down for anything longer than 2,3 days then you have to worry about your prepared food in there going bad. So what would happen in that scenario...you have to immediately eat it all or give it away and then you don't have as much in dry storage. Dry, shelf stable food is key. Using FS bags for food storage is great overall to meal prep and for convenience but not ideal for emergency situations.
Just wanted to say hi thanks for the info. And also for anybody out there he’s just getting started on food storage and you want to store some dry things and some sweet things you can do I can and store chocolate chips, I also store cornmeal because we have corn bread a lot and brownie mix because my husband loves brownies. Thanks 🙏 hope u have a Merry Christmas 🎄🎁!!!
Have you thought about for next years planner ... Adding a monthly stock up list in the planner maybe at the beginning of each month? Just a thought. I just did a pantry reset after Thanksgiving - stocking my kitchen pantry and restocking from Sams my working pantry. I was happy to see that I really did not need to purchase much at Sams to bring my personal pantry back to par levels. And have you noticed that stores are starting to carry Chicken and Rice soup again? This has not been in my stores in years! I picked up about 6 cans because when you have someone not feeling well - the chicken and rice is part of the BRAT diet. Just add dry toast for a light meal that is easy to handle for someone that is not feeling well.
Hello, please consider also putting up videos about using the food storage items, I do not use social media, only youtube, and I'm sure there are a few others. Thank you for sharing.
I am curious about your corn bread made with a jiffy mix and a yellow cake mix. Would you please share your recipe? I enjoy your videos. Merry Christmas!
Lol I had to put on the captions on, cuz I 1st heard that she mentioned the lemon cake with the jiffy. Buts it's the vanilla cake with jiffy. Can you also provide us the actual recipe for this and your other recipes. I would like to try new dishes, I have a bunch of books my mom brought me. And once I start reading, I go straight to sleep. I rather watch a video.
I never store evaporated milk or sweetened condensed milk. You can make both with powdered milk. It helps you rotate your powdered milk and takes just a minute to make!
I appreciate you doing these videos. I've been working on my pantry for a few years now. I feel like I'm continually taking inventory because I use what I store. I'm always watching for deals on things. Not sure if we will find as great a deals on things December with all the price increases, but I will get what I need regardless. I use evaporated milk all the time because that's what I use for my coffee creamer. I just add different extracts for different flavors. I've been buying them at Aldi for .65 a can, but they have been out for about a month now. I'm anxious for the cooking from the pantry videos. I have dehydrated powders that I have made from things I've grown and some things I've bought and I'm learning how to use them.
Wanted to add about the coffee creamer, as I also use evaporated milk in a pinch, but if I want it sweet I might do half evaporated and half sweetened condensed milk. Also another alternative is canned coconut milk.
Thank you for putting these series together. I have really enjoyed following along each month as you've shared practical ways in which to store up items for our homes. I've learned so much. I am looking forward to the new year and how you will be utilizing the items stored.
Inventing a place to put food storage! Stack cases of food storage on top of each other. Throw a tablecloth over them and now you have an end table for the living room or side tables for the bed.
Could you do a series in January on not spending any money and living only on your food storage, to show how it would work were it necessary? That would be really interesting, and useful for those who store food for unexpected situations.
Sure love your food storage content! You might consider having a disclaimer when you reference the The LDS Preparedness Manual. It’s not put out by the church and the tone doesn’t align with the church’s view on food storage, IMO. I found it had lots of great info, but definitely fear based perspective. It freaked me out when I read it, honestly. 😅 Thank you for providing such a wonderful and uplifting channel!
Evaporated milk lasts for years under correct storage conditions as long as the cans hold their integrity and are not bulging or rusting. Keep in a cool, dark, dry place and shake up the can twice a year.
I totally agree with you Kimmy. Gotta buy stuff cheap when you find it for storage. I wish eggs lasted longer cause they’ll be going up in price. I don’t have too much space so I store what I can. Mostly for baking. Thanks for all the tips and take care!
You can separate out the whites from the yolks and freeze them (I think they last 3 months? Not sure, please check that) and also can mix them and freeze as well. Check your refrigerator section for egg whites, sometimes you can get a carton and it's pasteurized so lasts quite a while.
