Love watching your videos Todd! As a former pro soccer player, I have been able to go from a 25 handicap to a 9 handicap in 2 years and learn A TON from your channel. Thank you as always!

I watched this video earlier today and it seemed to make sense. Went to the driving range this afternoon and put the lessons learned into my practice session with very positive results. Many thanks.
I m one of those experienced aussie golfers of 55yrs (started at 21) I peaked at playing great golf when i got to 40. Slowly my h cap got higher 8 to now at 76 h cap 26. Lack of practice but at my age u can expect it. My interest is still there but frustration has increased because I knew how well i played. Now I only practice short game (it s easier). I ve taken note of your great instruction to all aspects of the swing. Short game is ok, But you know what they say (drive for show and put for doe.) So if u don t have the show you rarely win the doe.
Great tip! Excited to try this out next round. By watching you I learned today my setup was all wrong. Thanks again Todd. Can you tell me have you done a lesson on how to setup when the ball is below or above your feet? Would love to see a lesson on that.
We do have a couple videos on different lies on our channel. You can also find the entire Vertical Line Swing System in my book, The Bad Lie www.badliegolfbook.com/
Todd, I’ve got to tell you. This method of establishing stance width and ball position has made all the difference . My drives are straighter, longer, and far more satisfying. Thank you!
Hi Todd, great video! One question I have regarding this lesson is what is the correct tee/ ball height for maximum results? I see golfers with theirs set up at all different heights. Keep the videos coming, I watch them all and they help tremendously! Thanks, Dan
This video helps tremendously. Todd, when you start the swing with 60% of your weight on your lead foot, how do you keep from swaying? Do you shift pressure into the heel of your right foot? What do you key on to complete your backswing? Your technique looks so smooth!
Great question. The key is to shift to the trail foot and keep your weight on the inside of the foot. For most amateur golfers I like to see it work towards the heal of the trail foot. Make sense?
Hello Todd, please comment about hand position at the top. These days the TV Pros cup the left hand or at a minimum hold it flat. Big difference between this and the old natural hand bend. This is a positive way to swing in to out and hit the ball solid however it takes some hand strength. Tell us what you think please.
I struggle with my hands coming through at impact. I work on making sure the back of my lead hand is pointed down but find myself rolling over my right hand. What is the proper swing technique for your hands at impact?
Thank you for getting back to me so quickly. I just want to make sure I understand this motion. Rotate the arms more and turn the logo on hand down. Or rotate the arms and rotate my left hand counterclockwise? I wish you could do a slow motion video on this subject. Thank You again. I wanted to try this new release today but the driving range is closed.
Love this driver setup. Have been doing this for a long time now and generally hit a slight draw. If I lift my lead arm I get the worst pull hook so I try to keep the sholders level. I also tee the ball higher than most.
Using a long enough driver makes this much easier. When a golfer uses a driver that is too short and defaults to his standard or flat swing plane, he will then swing back down and will realize he is going to miss the ball entirely unless he pulls the head back in across the line to make contact with the ball. A longer driver reaches the ball and promotes an inside out swing. Tall golfers have more trouble with this when using a standard length driver. I always did until I started experimenting with longer drivers. I now use a 47 inch driver with all other clubs proportioinate to that. Unlike before, I can now swing with my natural swing and hit the ball straight without any swing manipulations or back problems. I use graphite graphite shafts in the irons too to keep the swingweights under control. By the way the ratio of a 45 inch driver to a 5'9" golfer is the same as a 47 inch driver to a 6 footer. If you don't believe me do the math. It works out to 46.96 inches. If a golfer is taller than 6 feet the length should be even longer to keep the ratio the same. The USGA's proposal to make the maximum legal length 46 inches will destroy swings and destroy backs sending golfers to the doctor or chiropractor, especially as they get older and less flexible. The USGA is incompetent.
Todd. Watched this video today and went to the range. Very pleased with the results. However, when I place the butt of the club towards the middle / centre, the clubface appears open. If I square it then my hands go forward. Your observation would be welcome.
The driver can be the most difficult club the aim as the face has roll and bulge to it. This combination makes it easy for the face to lay open at address. Try bringing the clubhead up to waist height to find square before putting it back down. This has worked well for many of my students.
Thanks Todd, always good stuff! I've also learned a little spine tilt away at setup, which happened when you lifted left arm. What about weight distribution at set up for driver? Also 60% on left foot like irons, or?
Love this setup. Thats exactly what I try to do. Thing is that I roll on top of the ball. The ball flight is up and down so quickly. Can you please help me? Keep the videos up. They are very helpful.
If you have your set up down pat from a ball position standpoint, feet shoulder width or so apart and good rotation, the key is to maintain that tilt. That keeps you back and hammering the nail through the ball. This is what I have found works. Most people get all of these things correct, then try to "hit" the ball, causing them to get out of tilt and move forward too much, which results in sky high balls or coming over to the top and slicing. This use to be my issue and still happens at times, but as long as I stay tilted and in the back pocket, I'm money!
Great video, how do I keep from raising up on my swing? I don’t feel like I’m doing that but I filmed myself and I’m raising up and also doing a chicken wing swing. How can I correct myself from doing that?
Coach, this driver thing is my weakness, but I am still adamant about working it out. Today did a lesson, and my Pro had me hitting a few drivers after smoking 5W and 7 iron shots. I will admit it's the hardest part of my golf game, but know when I get it down and packed, the ball will be flying.
Great videos, Todd! I have been struggling with my driver for way too long to be consistent, with my bad miss going way right. When this happens, I find that my shaft is beating my club head and my face is wide open at impact. Can you help me to figure out how to square up that face so I won’t keep doing this???
You bet! This is our video on How to Hit a Draw with Driver: ua-cam.com/video/nrMX8reAhlY/v-deo.html Lots of great info here, but if you are looking for a good finish tip, use the TV Drill toward the end of the video. It starts around the 9 minute mark, but if you have the time the rest of the information is golden too!
That was very telling for me. The one thing that eluded me was hand psoition too far forward. Killing my drives. I can hit irons, hybrids all day. My driver has been a nemesis. Im off to the prctice facility today and I will try this. Thank you. Im 65. Love golf and I can hit my 7 iron 170 yards. My 7 iron and my 5 hybrid are my "go to" clubs and I hit both very well.
The left arm vertical tip you offer for “experienced golfers” does work, however my experience is that the ball often “pops-up or ball flight is reduced. This has always seemed strange to me since the ball flight should be higher. What else is involved that I’m overlooking? Thanks for these tips!
Good question, make sure you are also allowing the trail knee to release slightly and making a nice full turn. Without the turn you may be prone to “pop ups”
OK...LOL. I just came back from the range. I broke my back 3 years ago and am at the end of rehabbing. I just started hitting again a month ago. Had to get help learning to swing again. Lotta work. Lotta balls. But, I could not get my driver under control. Ive actually talked to some pretty famous names and they all gave great tips. But, couldnt make it work. I just stumbled on this video this morning and took what I learned to the range. ZERO expectations. I can hit my irons and hybrids great. I can launch my 7 iron nearly 180 yards. Thats carry distance. Cannot hit a wood or my driver. Anyway, the tip about hands in front of clubhead at setup... light went on. Warmed up and started testing it. Little off at first and made adjustments and suddenly I saw 225 yard carries no more than 5 yards off target line. By the time I got it figured, I was carrying past the 225 mark. Picked up the hated 3 wood and was banging it past 200. Im 65, busted back (better now) and I thought it was over. Just to be clear, there were other things that needed tweakin. But, this setup tip was the missing link and I wish I had video. Thank you Mr. Kolb. You unknowingly helped me save my love for golf.
Post of the month right here! Robert you made our day....thanks for sharing your story. Nothing better than hearing we have helped a fellow golfer enjoy this great game. Hope you subscribed.
@@USGOLFTVshow Quick update. I was still struggling with rehab from my fractures. But thats behind me. I worked very hard at all phases of my game. Ive watched many of Todds videos and I wish I could spend one day working with him. I just cleared the final key issue and that was widening my stance beyond shoulder width. Not severely, but maybe a shoes widtha nd it was the thing that brought it all together. The day I fixed this, palyed my favorite course. A 9 hole par 33 andwalked away with a clean 35. Why? My drives were all in great position on the fairway. My practice with hundreds of balls on my appraoch and short game gave me 2 birdies and a number of pars. You guys do help folks. Thanks
Todd I was watching the 60-40 method for irons. Does this also relate to the driver? Because to hit up on the driver, you need to tilt your shoulders to get the up swing.. I feel that I have more weight on my back foot to get the shoulder tilt so I can hit up on the ball. Is this wrong?
Good question. Yes the 60-40 works well for the driver also. Note, the set up calls for a 60-40 split with a favor to the lead foot, however early in the backswing that pressure moves quickly to the trail foot. It is this shift of pressure that improves tempo and increases distance. Make sense?
Do you thank I could learn to play scratch without coach and just practicing on five acres that is 150 yards to the back 110 to side to side and diagonally 170 yards im 15 and can land a drive between 250 and 260 with 8° and how do I practice long distance shots. thank you so much I hope to go on tour when im older, but thank you and God bless
I am having trouble releasing the driver with this vertical swing method. I'm hitting the irons with more distance. Any tips? Love your videos. (I'm one of those coming from hands in and around with little distance guy's) Thank You
Thanks for asking. In the Vertical Line Swing you will need to let the arms rotate more through the strike. A good feel is to get the logo on your glove to rotate down early in the impact zone. If you do it too early you may over hook it. Hope that helps 👊
In order to consistently draw the ball, I need to remind myself to use the "feel" of swinging out to right field with my club face aiming at the target. This can be a little intimidating on the tee but it usually works for me.
Right now I am using a stiff flex in my driver. The key to shaft flex is stiffness and also where it “kicks” or what we call bends. That can drastically change ball flight. Hope that helps.
Todd I’ve been playing golf 30yrs haven’t hit driver in 29 yrs because I sliced so I hit 3wood and my tee shots were ok.I’ve been following your driver tips closed stance club head facing target left arm high shoulders tilted club head outside hands in take away and have had some success with hitting draws but I’ve picked up a horrible weak hook could it bea weight transfer issue any ideas? Tom new york
Great question, the key is to get your lower body into the lead foot while your upper body stay back or under. Believe it or not, the proper move into the lead foot will help keep your chest behind the ball.
@@USGOLFTVshow Ha! as most weekend golfers I have loads of room to improve in all aspects of the game. You keep doing what you are doing and I'll keep watching, thx
How far should your hands\butt of the club be from your body with the driver? Do you just let your hands fall freely and that’s the position? I tend to stretch out a bit on the driver.
Great question, the hands should fall below the shoulders. A lot of our players like to reach just slightly when hitting the driver. Also be sure to hover the driver at set up. This is a great tip!
When my ball is forward, I invariably feel like it will fade or slice it (depending how effectively I get my weight transferred - I'm a bigger guy so that's a thing with me). Back in my stance it may be low but I know it's in play. I've been focusing on keep my shoulders parallel to closed. But I'm looking forward to try moving my trail foot back.
Ive played for 60 yrs. With yrs off raising kids. I do all you do & said. I'm 76 & lost about 100 + yds. Think I've just lost muscle? How do you get more distance? I work out but still lost & loosing yrds?
Seems like I'm forced to play the back further when setting up to drive the ball. Moving it forward in my stance I always take the ball left, not wicked hooks but far left. Maybe coming outside in I don't know. Have tried swinging inside out more but that gets ugly too. Any idea? Thx
AGREE using your method I am hitting it further...BUT they tell seniors(77) to narrow their stance and make a good shoulder turn. HELP.. I do fade the ball left to the middle... I would like to eliminate that, I'm losing distance. I realize I do swing out to in.. how do I make sure I take it inside? HELP
I've already placed it forward (off my left big toe). But my spin rate is still at 3,400 - lowest I get is around 2,900. My hands are way forward though because I feel this squares the face - having the shaft 'neutral' feels like the face is closed and I just cant get comforatble with that.
Good info, it would have been helpful to hear the yardage with each shot since you have all the data & equipment there. That’s the whole point of the video right?
I think you've covered all. I enjoy all your instruction videos. You're about my age and would love to see you playing with your same age buddies and how to manage or approach the course, club choices and just having fun playing few holes with good and bad shots like normal average golfers do 😁. Thanks again, you''re the best 👍
I was waiting for you to say when you lifted your lead arm up you said nothing about the natural tendency to push the right elbow closer to the body. And you did move it closer to the body and kept it there
No swing speed 75 age same for swing speed. Ball goes about 180 with a fade with driver, actually all my clubs do that except for PW, 9 iron 8 iron. Been playing golf for 50 years. I have a bad back . Should I quit. When I was 50 I was a single digit.
I just can't seem to get the driver figured out? I've been working with a coach. He keeps saying - there's nothing to worry about! Lol I know he'll get me hitting it. I just can't figure out why I have so much trouble?
This may sound like a corny idea but it you had a camera on your head so the viewer could see alignment, hands, and ball etc just like when they look down. Maybe a drone above your head?
@@USGOLFTVshow thanks. Just that little tip at the end about moving that front foot in and left hip out really helped. Went to the range today and was hitting draw after draw 200+ yards consistently. Thanks again.
Most drives are adjustable these days I have mine set to the highest loft and draw angle to help with the slice If I don’t press my hands forward then I’m going to hook it because the face is so closed at set up That seams to work bestfor me but I think the setting in the driver has some factor in where the hands should be Do you agree or disagree ?
Spouse had back surgery, now she cannot feel her feet. She is now topping the ball. I suspect that your feet feel is part of the brain's calculation as to where the ground is. Any comments?
Sorry to hear of your the challenges for your spouse. You are correct, a wider stance with the toes flared will help the body feel stable/secure. This is important for those who struggle with balance. Hope these ideas help.
OH golf swing speed. Were nt any measurement speed devices when i started, I have my speedometer: best I can get is 80 mph with a carry of 170 yds with driver

Hi Todd; Can you go into the slight bumping of the hips forward at the beginning of the downswing to prevent spinning out?

Love this setup. Thats exactly what I try to do. Thing is that I roll on top of the ball. The ball flight is up and down so quickly. Can you please help me? Keep the videos up. They are very helpful.
Check your clubshaft, it could be too flexible. If the all is going straight up and down, best guess is the shaft.

In order to consistently draw the ball, I need to remind myself to use the "feel" of swinging out to right field with my club face aiming at the target. This can be a little intimidating on the tee but it usually works for me.
Swing to right field and watch the ball draw!
Cheers thnks mate, the V Best easiest tip i have EVER been shown, left arm up...great
Glad it helped, thanks for watching and hopefully you subscribed!
Hi Todd, you say that you don't have much of a fast swing with your driver. I am just wondering what flex of shaft do you use?
Thanks,
RM
Tom, thanks for the kind words. Here is a good place to start ua-cam.com/video/Tex0pm1A31s/v-deo.html
With the ball forward you’re catching it later in the arc, swiping across the ball, what adjustments do you make with the face?
Keep the face square to the target line. We cover this in detail on the book www.badliegolfbook.com/
@@USGOLFTVshow what does that mean?
Hi, How do you stay behind the ball while transferring your weight to the lead side?
Regards
Great question, the key is to get your lower body into the lead foot while your upper body stay back or under. Believe it or not, the proper move into the lead foot will help keep your chest behind the ball.
Todd - you should tell us distance you are driving the ball with correct stance vs. drive you started with in the video. Love your videos - Sam Sweat
Good idea! Will be sure to add that next time. Thanks
I never hear about the hands/wrists in driver address. Are the wrists bent up, down or neutral? Also, the distance from the ball.
Here is a good place to start ua-cam.com/video/FTbF-32SA2Q/v-deo.html
i'll try that this weekend .. thank you very much
Our pleasure! Other topics you would like to see us cover?
@@USGOLFTVshow Ha! as most weekend golfers I have loads of room to improve in all aspects of the game. You keep doing what you are doing and I'll keep watching, thx
How far should your hands\butt of the club be from your body with the driver? Do you just let your hands fall freely and that’s the position? I tend to stretch out a bit on the driver.
Great question, the hands should fall below the shoulders. A lot of our players like to reach just slightly when hitting the driver. Also be sure to hover the driver at set up. This is a great tip!
Hi Todd. What kind of golf tees are you using in this video? Thanks.
Standard wooden tees....
@@USGOLFTVshow Okay. Thanks. It looked as if you were flipping the tee up after each swing. BTW - thanks for the great videos.
What hand grip do you use
When my ball is forward, I invariably feel like it will fade or slice it (depending how effectively I get my weight transferred - I'm a bigger guy so that's a thing with me). Back in my stance it may be low but I know it's in play. I've been focusing on keep my shoulders parallel to closed. But I'm looking forward to try moving my trail foot back.
How high should the ball be tee’d up with driver for maximum distance; assuming no wind ?
Good question, you want to tee the ball up so that 1/2 of the ball is above the top of the clubhead.
Ive played for 60 yrs. With yrs off raising kids. I do all you do & said. I'm 76 & lost about 100 + yds. Think I've just lost muscle? How do you get more distance? I work out but still lost & loosing yrds?
I have no right wrist, what can I do to improve my ball striking? I am a 73 year old male, right handed player.
Hi, Love the lessons, from over the pond England
Jeff, awesome! We need to do a golf school in England! Any takers?
Seems like I'm forced to play the back further when setting up to drive the ball. Moving it forward in my stance I always take the ball left, not wicked hooks but far left. Maybe coming outside in I don't know. Have tried swinging inside out more but that gets ugly too. Any idea? Thx
Loved the lessons. Has helped me a lot especially in my short game!!!!
Check the clubface at address to see if it is closed. Also be sure you have a slight rightward aim in your set up.
Thanks for the replys. Will work on it at the range tomorrow
When tee up irons on par 3s I’m not getting ball up and hit a bullet and always short. Any tips
We have a couple very good videos on how to hit your irons. Check our our channel for those...
HELP
Great question, keep the stance wide but be sure to point/flare your toes. This will give you the stability you need yet allow for movement. 👊
Great 👍 tutorial. Liked the way you did it wrong. Then the correct way 👍👍👍👍
Thanks, hope the info helps! 👍
I've already placed it forward (off my left big toe). But my spin rate is still at 3,400 - lowest I get is around 2,900. My hands are way forward though because I feel this squares the face - having the shaft 'neutral' feels like the face is closed and I just cant get comforatble with that.
Nope doesn't work either. Spin rate goes up to 3,900 to 4,200 actually.
Todd's got the most swag of all the teachers there are out there!
LOL, appreciate that my friend. Doing the best we can to share some knowledge gems with the golfing world.
Good info, it would have been helpful to hear the yardage with each shot since you have all the data & equipment there. That’s the whole point of the video right?
Fair points, we have made these changes in our upcoming content. Appreciate the feedback!
Terrific and much thanks RRM
Our pleasure, are you a subscriber?
how do you handle windy conditions with the driver
Great question, tee it slightly lower and hit it solid. They key is solid contact. A ball struck in the center of the face will spin less....
Excellent as always. Thanks!
Omar, thank you. What other topics would you like to see us cover?
I think you've covered all. I enjoy all your instruction videos.
You're about my age and would love to see you playing with your same age buddies and how to manage or approach the course, club choices and just having fun playing few holes with good and bad shots like normal average golfers do 😁.
Thanks again, you''re the best 👍
I hit a 250 yard drive after this video! Been golfing for a few years and never got over 150 yards with my driver
Let's go....thanks for posting
Great tips,thanks 💗
You are so welcome! Here is a good video to add some speed to your driver now ua-cam.com/video/8-qT6LKAQYE/v-deo.htmlsi=Xeo55PoZR7tPUH0_
Great advice, thanks
Glad it was helpful!
Where would you ground out with driver?
The ideal spot is just before contact so that you have a slight upward angle of attack. Good question. Hope that helps...be sure to subscribe!
Awesome video
Thank you. I cover this in great detail in my book The Bad Lie if you enjoy learning. You can find it on Amazon here www.badliegolfbook.com/
I just can't seem to get the driver figured out?
I've been working with a coach. He keeps saying - there's nothing to worry about! Lol
I know he'll get me hitting it. I just can't figure out why I have so much trouble?
Russel, I do have a full section on the set up in my latest book, The Bad Lie if you are interested. www.badliegolfbook.com/
Wish my first golf coach was as nice as you
LOL, thank you. We are here to help...
Thanks 👍
We got you. If you enjoy learning, you may want to consider this www.badliegolfbook.com/
This may sound like a corny idea but it you had a camera on your head so the viewer could see alignment, hands, and ball etc just like when they look down. Maybe a drone above your head?
Solid idea, will pass forward to content team. Thanks!
Do a fix your slice with the driver video please or if you have one can you put the link below?
You bet, here you go: ua-cam.com/video/32z--JFePrs/v-deo.html

@@USGOLFTVshow thanks. Just that little tip at the end about moving that front foot in and left hip out really helped. Went to the range today and was hitting draw after draw 200+ yards consistently. Thanks again.
@@USGOLFTVshow hit more fairways today. I think I missed two out of 18. Too bad my second shot and chipping still sucks.
Most drives are adjustable these days
I have mine set to the highest loft and draw angle to help with the slice
If I don’t press my hands forward then I’m going to hook it because the face is so closed at set up
That seams to work bestfor me but I think the setting in the driver has some factor in where the hands should be
Do you agree or disagree ?
Great
Great tips Todd.
Thank you! Which part did you find the most helpful?
@@USGOLFTVshow the part about leaning the shaft forward. I know I am guilty of that.
God bless
Spouse had back surgery, now she cannot feel her feet. She is now topping the ball. I suspect that your feet feel is part of the brain's calculation as to where the ground is. Any comments?
Sorry to hear of your the challenges for your spouse. You are correct, a wider stance with the toes flared will help the body feel stable/secure. This is important for those who struggle with balance. Hope these ideas help.
OH golf swing speed. Were nt any measurement speed devices when i started, I have my speedometer: best I can get is 80 mph with a carry of 170 yds with driver
