Built in the 13th century, Girsberg Castle sits on a cliff high above Ribeauvillé in Alsace. The castle was besieged and conquered in the 15th century. A legend tells the tragic story of two brothers.

It is not known when the first castle was built on the rocky spur. The architectural features of these remains, suggest a construction in the first half of the 13th century. Probably a family branch of the Lords of Ribeaupierre built the castle as a residence. A lightning strike in 1288 destroyed most of the castle complex. This is accompanied by the first written mention as "castrum quod dictur der Stein". The castle was rebuilt after this accident.
In 1298 Anselm II of Ribeaupierre inherited the castle. In 1304, he exchanged it for the ancestral seat of the Lords of Girsberg, near Soultzbach-les-Bains in the Val Müstair. From now on the castle on the rock was called Girsberg Castle.
On June 11, 1422, the rule of the Girsbergs came to an end. Maxim I Smassmann of Ribeaupierre, together with Count Hans of Lupfen, besieged the castle, conquered it and set it on fire.
Hans of Girsberg, against whom their anger was focused, was shot during the battle.
Since the latter had no children, the castle fell back to the Lords of Ribeaupierre.
From 1458 they had the castle administered by a bailiff.
The castle was now extensively renovated. The keep and the Romanesque residential building were raised and the entire core castle was enlarged.
The castle was still inhabited until the beginning of the 16th century, but then the inhabitants left. It slowly began to decay.
The ruins are within sight of Haut-Ribeaupierre Castle and Saint-Ulrich Castle. It is the smallest of the three castles of Ribeauville.
The remains of the core castle are enthroned on a vertical granite rock and can only be reached by climbing, which is not without danger. If you take the risk, you can see the ruins of the pentagonal keep, a semicircular tower and the former residential building. In addition, views of the surrounding countryside are breathtaking.
Below the core castle lies the outer castle. Parts of the ring wall and the late Gothic castle gate are still preserved.
During the 1990s, restoration work was carried out to secure the ruins.
As befits a castle, there is of course also a legend.
Two brothers, who were the lords of Girsberg Castle and Saint-Ulrich Castle, arranged to go hunting. They agreed that the one who wakes up first should wake up the other one by a shot with the crossbow at his shutter. When the owner of Saint-Ulrich Castle got out of bed the following morning, he immediately got ready to shoot with the crossbow to Girsberg Castle. But at the very moment when he opened his own shutter, the arrow of his brother, who had gotten up even earlier, whizzed up and pierced his heart.
