Omg Man can you imagine if she had stuck around. She was just way ahead of her time AND the game. All her demons you speak of would've been addressed today and wouldn't seem foreign to her. No one spoke about mental illness back then and STILL don't in the black community. But all she wished for back THEN would've been laid at her feet today had she stuck it out. I miss her so much as a fan. Btw just realized this a year late since your comment. I so hope and pray you are happy and well and still enjoying hearing great artist like Phyllis.

QUEEN just in case no man shared this with you it's not that we are intimidated by you. It's that a lot of women come off as COMPETITION towards men. And men want COMPANIONSHIP not COMPETITION. Men gotta go out and fight the world to exist and make a living last thing men want to do is come home and compete with you too. Home is where we are supposed to chill and have a partner. Not be constantly reminded that you don't need us and you can do it all on your own.Men need to feel needed and Women want to feel wanted. Some of this is the Governments fault too tho. Btw hope you are happy, healthy and getting ready to enjoy our first summer of freedom.

@@shannonstewart4792 Men don’t have to go out and fight the world by themselevs and women don’t have to stay at home.
Why do u think women fought to not to be in those conditions? Women are simply voicing their Voice on earth that belongs to them too. Women wanting her own stuff isn’t a competition to anything else but your ego.
Guys like u see it as compwtition, the rest of the world see it as women living their lives how they wish.

Not sure what the comment of "she was gay and very troubled" meant below however I am sure you meant well. Phyllis had bipolar disorder and it was never diagnosed that is where the trouble came from and gave her the ups and downs and unfortunately it got the best of her and she took her own life. Having this problem and drinking led her to start using cocaine at times and it simply became a recipe for disaster. I am not denying the "she was gay" comment below but I am responding as to why this wonderful talent and bright light took her life the troubles came from an undiagnosed bipolar disorder. .

I know she suffered from bipolar you can see the symptoms here. She’s very unsure and up and down in one instance. I wish she’d gotten the help she needed and not self medicated

@@shakeyras_beauty I agree. I sometimes say nothing is too strong for Christ but I think she wasn't a believer and chose to depend on other chemicals to make it thru.

Over six foot tall? So what! You don’t have to worry so much about a grown woman that has her own. I understand that and appreciate it. Just take care of her spiritual and emotional needs. She can handle the rest. If she had a secure confident man he would have ensured that she would be with us today.

It’s crazy because she had to come to a solid conclusion that she was done with life and to think when did the idea hit her like after this song I’m walking out of here and I’m done.

    (1) There are men amongst us who feel that if they can't manipulate or control (which has nothing 2 do with being "intimidated") a woman. She is a waste of his time. For them, it's not about being 'intimidated' so much as 'turned off'. Because they can't have a robot in the form of a female servant. This is often MISTAKEN for being "intimidated" by a woman. Men can recognize this in other men. While most women automatically see it as a "weak" man who can't "handle" a strong woman. This is totally incorrect. This type of man is so narcissistic/self centered that he can't even BE intimidated by a woman. Because his only concern is HIM. For him, there is no intimidation. Only conquest...or nothing. Borderline sociopath.
    (2) Millions of alpha males ***naturally*** ACTUALLY PREFER a more laid back woman. These men do not fit into the 1st category above. This type of man is respectful & appreciative of women. And doesn't see a strong/independent woman as competition in a relationship. This is the type of man who KNOWS his self worth. But is humble. He KNOWS what he brings 2 the table. Therefore, he can't be 'intimidated' in the normal sense by the everyday (average) woman. But he does tend to "but heads" w/ alpha women who don't know the difference between being 'strong' vs. being 'abrasive/passive aggressive' disrespectful 2wards him. This is not so much a 'right' or 'wrong' issue. As it is CHEMISTRY.
(3)Then there are those men [she alludes to this in the interview]who feel that they may not bring anything worthwhile to the relationship. Either by way of finances or attractiveness as a man. This is an inner insecurity. THIS IS DEFINITELY A FORM OF BEING INTIMIDATED BY SEEING A GOOD LOOKING CELEBRITY W/ HER OWN FINANCES. But not due 2 the man seeing the woman as 'competition'. Or seeing her as "Too Strong". Lol. This is the man doubting that SHE'D be interested in HIM. Big difference. The average man is not walking around intimidated by the AVERAGE woman. Phyllis Hyman was not the average woman! Phyllis Hyman was a celebrity. No matter how down 2 earth she was...the lifestyle that comes w/ dating a celebrity is not like that of a normal couple. I'd expect there to be some type of apprehension before getting involved with a celebrity (regardless of gender). That's normal. WHAT WORLD DO U ALL LIVE IN WHERE THE AVERAGE MAN (or woman) ISN'T INITIALLY INTIMIDATED WHEN INTERACTING W/ A CELEBRITY? Especially if ur attracted to them. The average person would've 100% been intimidated by her status upon meeting her. Especially initially. And especially the average Black person back then...lol. Because to us she was damn near Diva royalty for a time. Let's face it, most celebrities are not dating average joe's w/ average jobs. Phyllis seemed to be down 2 earth. But statistically, celebrities are used 2 living a certain type of life. Unfortunately, for Phyllis, her gift & status probably made her **seem** unreachable 2 a lot of men who were on the outside looking in. And that's not on her. But it is what it is.
    (4) Has anyone even stopped to consider that perhaps a lot of men prefer a regular relationship. As opposed to having to share your woman w/ the tours, highs & lows of the recording/entertainment industry, the fans. And the time apart. Men (just as women do) have the right to decide what's best FOR THEM! In this case, it's not intimidation. It's choosing oneself over the craziness of being with a celebrity...lol. And that's EVERYONE'S RIGHT...man or woman.
    (5) Obviously, in retrospect, we can see that Phyllis was in pain. But what we could not know behind closed doors, is if she had extreme mood swings. CONTRARY 2 POPULAR BELIEF...U CAN INTERNALLY HAVE "High's/low's" w/out putting the internal feelings on full outward display. Would this not possibly contribute to more stress in a relationship? We need to remove emotion from the equation when addressing this. No matter how hard. The fact remains that no man or woman is *obligated* to stay on an emotional rollercoaster ride of a relationship...period! If they do so out of a sense of loyalty and/or bond...all good. But no one is *obligated*. However, I do wish that someone had come along with the patience & true understanding of her emotional state 2 help her to heal.
    (6) My personal belief is that although she seemed quite content with her physical appearance. She was not as confident in her appearance as she portrayed. This is just a gut feeling on my part. I believe that this may have contributed to her depression. Although most of us saw/see a stunning and gorgeous woman...I don't believe that she saw that. Yes, she spoke on it in this interview. But to me she maintained a certain class & strength that [she felt] was probably expected of her. I think that she was asking for help. Particularly in the last couple of years before passing. Without wanting to break from what was generally expected of her.
