My orthodox Jewish family lived in Jerusalem/Jaffa for 150 years. My great,great grandparents sold everything they had and moved to Palestine in the late 1700's. They bought a building with rooms and a large courtyard. They rented out rooms. They interacted with all kinds of people &
my great grandparents learned Arabic and French. They left for the US in the early part of the 20th century, due to economics. My grandparents met there. They played with the tenants' animals and children. My grandmother was married in a Bedouin dress. My grandfather went with his Arab buddies to pick olives & later, when he was a salad chef at a fancy SF restaurant, he brought olive oil from Palestine to serve. As the generations went by, the younger folks stopped being orthodox, but remained Jews. The original folks were Zionists, but it's always been half and half until with my generation, most are reform. We still have family in Haifa, but siblings are all over the US. I am a secular Jew and not a Zionist, never have been. I believe in a one state secular government. Pipe dream? Maybe. We all got along under the Ottoman, but the Brits believe in divide and concquor.
