I'm glad you're willing to revisit rc's that didn't do well in a review when a company says our product should do better. I don't like the lack of QC HPI seems to have with their budget rc cars. QC should be good across the board not just on $500 kits and above.
Thanks for the update on the HPI Jumpshot. It did seem a little slow from the original speed runs. Good on HPI for testing and changing out the motor. I'm sure the cynics amongst us would say HPI sent back a juiced-up motor??? Would be good to have people chime in with speed runs of their Jumpshots to confirm the new speeds are legit out of the box. That or maybe pick up another Jumpshot from a local hobby shop to test?? Can't wait for the incoming shootout vids of the Quantum 2 v Big Rock v MT10 v???
Nice, new motor makes a huge difference. Nice to see HPI back with entry level RTR. Wish I had something like this when I started RC in 1984. My first rig was a Tamiya Hornet with the old silver can, FM radio and mechanical speed control. I remember you were doing well if your battery lasted 8 minutes.
The Arrma George Costanza still would be the winner. That ST version of the HPI would be another pick. Nice work in going back and giving HPI another spin.
My only issue with the motor you got is it was hand picked to be sent for you to try. Im sure it was tested and one of the best you could possibly get. Curious if any of the normal stock motors will have the same kind of performance. This is the same reason I don't like videos of products the manufacturer hand picks and sends for review. Good for you though giving them a second chance as it could have just been a fluke motor. . Either way great video and keep up the good work Phil.
Good on HPI for coming through on this one, I wonder if they read the comment as well as watching the videos. Looks ike a good performer now that's for sure 1mph is nothing in difference anyway.😊😊😊😊.
I found a set of good tyres for my E-revo they ballon something terrible at 50mph but have not split or come unglued yet. No maker name on them. I'll get some details for you when I get home after my nightshift.
Fun fact - Stampede body fits the Jumpshot. I couldn't find a replacement body for my Jumpshot so I tried my Stampede body and it fit. Much cheaper and easier to find a Traxxas body here in Canada.
My HPI has been a frustratingly good time. As a RC company they need to get relevant in the electric racing world. Make us a platform that can compete with Traxxas. All of the Jumpshot line struggles against their counterparts. They need to make a good halo platform that is adjustable and relevant to a few classes of racing.
Excellent update. Its cool they took care of it. I dont always watch the videos, but when i do i watch all the way to the end and comment for the algorithm....lol. Thanks for doing giveaways, i hope it goes to people that want to get into the hobby.
I can imagine the "shocked Pikachu" expressions at the HPI dealer's face when that slowness dropped.I'm still standing by my opinion on sealed can motors with fans in them. Be it Traxxas 20t Stinkers and 12t Tinderboxes or a myriad of noname Chinese units... Never had a Mabuchi or Johnson that's been more irritatingly slow than the other 🤭
100%, Mabuchi/Johnson FTW. My first Traxxas purchase (bandit 2409? I think, Mechanical ESC, old square body) came with a 20T Stinker, and it was much slower on the same battery than my Tamiya DF-02 Rising Storm with stock Mabuchi 540 and TEU-101BK.....
So, all these so-called "12 Turn" RTR motors are really just the exact same motor, the Johnson RS550. Thing is, there's two versions of this motor, and the 12 Turn ones are the 6v rated ones while the old "Titan 550" motors that Traxxas used to have in the E-MAXX were the 12v ones. Thing is, there's no real way to tell which is which outside of testing, as the 6v ones are significantly faster but somewhat less torquey than the 12v ones. So it's possible that HPI might have gotten a 12v motor in one of their shipments rather than a 6v one, and accidentally put it in your Jumpshot MT. I use the 12v motors in my 12lb combat robot, they're REALLY powerful but you need to run them at higher voltages to get any sort of speed out of them. Kernel Panic runs four of them on 4S through 16:1 planetary gearboxes and hits around 15-16mph, which is blisteringly fast for a 12lb combat robot. They actually don't run that hot, even though in robot combat they spend a lot of time with a lot more load on them, constantly accelerating and decelerating and often slipping and/or stalling, not to mention the interior of a combat robot is typically enclosed and not good for heat dissipation. As a side note, this means that any brushed RTRs are going to perform very similarly, with their speed being determined solely by weight and gearing.
Can’t help but think that anyone watching this now that happens to have one of the “duff motors” in theirs without even realising but thinking “THIS IS SLOW” is now going…OY HPI…you owe me a proper motor !!! 😂
@@tomley_rc Absolutely 👍🏻👌🏻 Bought my 7 year old son an Arrma Gorgon for Christmas…he really loves it 😎 Thinking of getting another one for myself and doing a 3s brushless conversion 🤪
That went a lot better with a properly working motor in it. That is the standard motor HPI puts in their trucks right? Actually, you should have feigned offense and said the only way HPI could fix it would be by sending you a 5b Flux kit.
I started with an HBX. Wanted more, bought a rustler VXL and.... it's fine but it just didn't do it for me. It's controlled, neat, predictable and fast, it's easy. The HPI tires aren't very good in wet conditions though and i seem to break all HPI servo's within days. But it's fun as can be those jumpshots.
Would that have made a difference in the winner? I think so but still being the fact that it had the quality out of the box makes me wonder how many other trucks had that problem?
Chinese sealed tin motors are extremely hit and miss across the board, when the Traxxas 12T 550 first came out many of the motors overheated and crapped themselves with the standard gearing. Sometimes they were gutless from the start and other times you would get 2-3 trouble free runs before they started slow leaking the magic smoke, overall around 50% of them were unsatisfactory, I believe the main issue was weak brush spring(s).
or as i seen down at the track that a slight used titan 550 start to scream like a pig that the bearing that is dry got a tiny bit of dust and got ruined to the point the engine got scraped eavn if it got some lube to mend the problem.
I wonder if they bench tested a bunch and sent you the best one they had, or modified it slightly. Would have been a fairer test if you has gone and brought a new replacement spare motor from a shop.
Well of course it would have changed the points because it would have been able to perform just as good if not better than the other ones because it would have had the right power system
