The F-35 Could Become a 'Navy' Killer (Thanks to Norway)

  • In the mid 2000s, the Royal Norwegian Navy was looking to select a new anti-ship missile (ASM) to equip their ships. They looked at all foreign offerings, didn’t find any missile satisfactory, and instead drew up their own set of requirements.
The requirements were: to meet the challenges of a future (up to 2040) ship-to-ship combat environment; to have a high probability of penetrating enemy air defense and countermeasures; to be effective in confined and open waters; and to be easily adaptable to different platforms.
From these requirements, Kongsberg Defense drew up the NSM, or Nytt sjømålsmissil. The name “Naval Strike Missile” was only attached later for English marketing purposes. The philosophy behind the design was to create a subsonic, small, agile missile that would be hard to observe, as opposed to a larger, supersonic missile. For reference, the NSM is only four-meters long. This is half the length of the Russian P-800 and P-700 missiles.
The Russian missiles also use active radar homing in the terminal phase. This can alert a ship that it is being targeted. In contrast, the NSM uses a passive infrared (IR) sensor to home in on its target. Passive IR seeker technology for ASMs was pioneered by Kongsberg on the earlier Penguin anti-ship missile.
In addition to each individual missile being low observable and agile to avoid shipborne anti-missile defenses, the NSM is designed to work with an advanced mission planning system. This system leverages the strengths of the NSM (the agility, terrain following flight and low altitude) to create precise attack plans with multiple missiles arriving on the same target at the same time. Such saturation attacks are very hard to defend against.
Terminal accuracy of the NSM is said to be less than two feet from the aim point to the impact point, so specific systems and areas on a ship can be incorporated into these attack plans to achieve desired disabling results. Another selling point of the NSM is its ability to recognize a ship’s class through the seeker. This ability is called autonomous target recognition (ATR). It allows the missile to engage the correct aim point for maximum damage and provide intelligence to the launching ship.
Upon hitting the target, the effect of the NSM is determined by the programmable fuze. It can be programmed to detonate after penetration, allowing the titanium warhead casing to burrow into a target for maximum damage. There is also a steel grid within the warhead casing, to create a fragmentation effect for additional damage.

NSM, and especially its future derivative Joint strike missile - JSM, is a cool little missile, great for the variety of missions. Although it's warhead is relatively small, since it's an advanced smart missile, it will be capable of striking specific parts of the targeted ship which could mean at least a mission kill even for larger surface combatants. I'm especially excited for the JSM, which will be carried inside the F-35's bomb bay, and will have longer range, larger warhead and ability to strike moving targets on sea and on land. That is game changing - stealthy missile on a stealth jet...

Imagine 2 or 3 f35s with a couple of JSMs each. Could probably set an entire fleet out of play. It would definitely obliterate the other ships morale when the largest ships suddenly blow up and sink

Well, don't hope it ever will be used in war, US should also buy the JSM who is the only until now who fit into the F-35.

So just turn the nsm or jsm whatever I guess there both the same thing but anyway just turn them into hypersonic JSM OR NSM ..... I think with hypersonic they will work better with the stealth they have .

    • @Norsksk
      @Norsksk 3 роки тому

The whole point of being subsonic is that they become stealthy. The second it becomes supersonic you can see it on radars

@@Norsksk that's what I'm hearing although it feels like it makes better sense if a missile was way faster seeing it doesn't always mean it can be stopped it just means your looking at death before your eyes hahahah

About 5 min of narrative (really hard to understand digital voice) with large silent gaps spread out over 11 min of F-35 stock video. No imagery at all of the NSM, not even pics from it's Wikipedia article.

The F-35 is the best stealth fighter ever (in many ways more advanced than the F-22). It’s also the most hated by NATO foes and friends, strange.

For showing force and to make anyone rethink attacking us. Its also because these fighter jets will be used in international operations with USA and Nato to have the same hardware will make the force information sharing easy and will make it possible for autonomous fleet control.

The F-16's are getting to old and will be replaced by the F-35 when it comes to deployment.
Guess they will use some of them as training jets but that's about it.
